    Thank you for the great work you did, Ben; it’s so wonderful to finally have smooth walls and ceiling! We just started painting everything and still have lots of work ahead of us. For those who were wondering why we didn’t just scrape the ceiling, it had been painted sometime in the past... too bad.

    2nd of your vids I've watched. I'm a tinsmith(roofs), but I do a lot of paint and plaster work in the winter. I was taught by an old timer. I see many of his tricks in your work. I relate to your woodwork. It's like repairing a roof deck, no one will ever see it. It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to work. I'm impressed with your skills and your work habits. Most construction is just measure, cut, and fasten. But there are some things that can't be taught. How to feel the heat while soldering different metals, and how to use a finishing trowel. They're are "touch" skills, like pulling a straight line with a paint brush. You either "feel" it, or you don't. Thanks.

    Wouldn’t it just be easier to rip it all out and redo the drywall? This is what I did in my downstairs area. The walls and ceiling were textured so I ripped it all out and had a crew come in and resheetrock it in an hour. I taped it up and had the whole thing done and painted in 3 days.

    • @wally7856
      @wally7856 3 роки тому +1

      After you do that you'll find out that you have to skimcoat the ceiling anyways because the drywall was never finished properly because why bother if you are going to texture. If you want flat painted ceilings, skim coating gives the best look so may as well get to it right away.

    • @HotspotsSoutheast
      @HotspotsSoutheast 3 роки тому +2

    I just finished scraping my first popcorn ceiling, only 1000 sq ft more to go. My dad helped me rip down the first of 5 popcorned valances, similar to this one, in my area's version of the "BC Box" (I have a Vancouver Island Rancher). When I was doing the ceiling I had the best luck with 2"-6" putty knives because I wasn't strong enough in my hands and arms to manage even pressure on a bigger one. I keep coming back to this video and others you've made. Wish me luck as I try my first taping and mudding this weekend. I've never really touched tools or done any home reno DIY before. My future UA-cam channel is more comedy and cautionary tales than DIY information. =)

    Vancouver is a big place. I was trying to get. a look on Google maps to see if I could guess what area you were in but man it goes on forever. It's not one of the newer subdivisions where they pack the houses in together like sardines so that eliminated most to the areas close up to the hills and it's not near the downtown area where the houses are also packed close together. I found maybe 3 or 4 areas it might be in but I can see where it would take you almost an hour to get to any of these places.

    I am wondering what your criteria is for covering a wood floor before beginning work. Your thoughts?

    • @eyespy3001
      @eyespy3001 3 роки тому +3

      For this kind of work, you don’t really need to cover the floors. In fact, floor coverings can be a safety hazard when ladders/stilts are being used. Best to make a mess and simply clean it afterwards, since you’ll l mainly be dealing with dust and debris that can be easily be vacuumed and mopped/wiped clean with a damp cloth. Your worst case scenario is that a large piece of drywall falls on the floor and makes a dent in soft wood flooring. However, unless you threw down cardboard, no amount of paper or plastic will prevent that from happening.
      There are really only two-possibly three- occasions when you want to cover your floors:
      1- when you’re painting, in which case taping down brown paper is your best bet
      2- if you’re removing popcorn/textured ceilings to catch all the material and water that falls, which makes cleanup incredibly easy (in which case I suggest using large, thicker plastic throw covers taped to perimeter of the area you’re working in)
      3- if you’re working on a carpeted floor, since it’s harder to clean fine particulates out of carpet pile

    Hi Ben. I'm 41 and know what you mean, with a big breakfast I can go all day non-stop... perhaps a cuppa ever 3 hours for a rest break, then i have to eat around 7pm. My friend who I hire to help me with larger DIY jobs (' muscle') has 6 eggs and 5 slices of bread for breakfast and a mug of coffee, unless he's hungry then he has more...thats it until supper time when he has eats some leftovers....

    Wondering why you wouldn't wet/scrape the ceiling instead of floating it out?
