Hey, I just wanted to say that I love both Walk The Plank and Medieval Madness! I am obsessed with both the medieval period and the history of pirates. Keep up the good work. 😊👍
Having animals that were both pets and vermin control makes sense to me! You get the best of both sentimental, emotional reasons for an animal and practical, logical reasons. Exotic pets would be a status symbol and, if times were tough, a source of money if you had to sell it
I wonder if my ancestors were just as obsessed with chickens as I was.. I imagine great-great-great-grandpa Lauritz befriended many of the ships pets on his trip across the sea
I've owned two parrots in the past. It is plausible a pirate (or any sailor) COULD have kept one on a ship. However, wild caught birds (of which one of my birds was and most birds in this time period probably would have been) can be nasty and bite, while hand raised birds are typically more gentle. All parrots, wild caught, or hand raised can be very loud. I would say it was easier for officers to keep a parrot as they would have had more space available (a cabin vs. a hammock).
Crazy because I know someone that has a disfigured nose because of her pet parrot. Parrots also go crazy from lack of stimulation. You'd think one being stuck on a ship would definitely drive it crazy
@brandonsmith5880 quite correct, parrots become very attached to their owners and are very loving and affectionate, but demand a lot of attention. If you abuse or ignore your bird, they pluck their feathers from stress and or boredom. I had Conures, which are small to midsized birds and they were very capable of drawing blood of they got mad. I could imagine that a ticked off Macaw or African Gray could do some serious damage.
Been looking for good resources to spoil everyone’s fun after the popularity of Netflix’s new One Piece series. Thanks! Refrigerators and tangerine trees on board a pirate ship my arse! Lmao.
Dogs are truly man’s best friend, & cats are our eyes to things we cannot see! Although, dogs have great senses too, it’s best to have both that get along with each other & can team up!LOL Add a monkey & a parrot, & you got one helluva team!lol
despite having animals onboard they’re not exactly pets if they’re food or members of the crew…so i guess the claim of not knowing is true since it’s technically true that they didn’t but also technically false that they didn’t. so like piracy, it’s a legal gray area that they had them or not!
you should make a community server on discord or some other platform, to share sorces and other material from the pirate era! great videos, keep up the great work!
Ok, pirate checklist: I want a parrot on my left shoulder, a monkey on my right. The raven will have to wait because this time I am not larping as a viking. Plus a cat and two dogs by my side. Alright mateys, you gotta board this merchantman without me, I need to figure out how much taurine there is in salt pork and if peanuts can be kept under deck without developing aspergilus mould.
It shall now forever fill me with jubilant mirth to envision pirates as the "crazy cat ladies" of the seas. Thank you. :D

Is the medieval one done by the same people? If it's anything like this channel I definitely need to subscribe
@@brandonsmith5880yeah it's another channel under the umbrella of Top5's channel!

If I were a pirate on a boat for a long period of time I would definitely want a cat to keep the rats away and maybe an exotic friend to play with.
cats, dogs, and monkeys…three animals that can work in key roles and offer companionship to you 😎
I would for sure have had a monkey if I was a pirate. No doubt about it.

I would not doubt they kept a couple sheep on board. The man would probably starve before they would eat the sheep.
