It has always struck me how Bill speaks the way he plays, often (as he says about Jim Hall's playing) "...implying something big with something small." The way he will begin a phrase and then leave it hang in the air...and then beginning again, in a related direction, and following that...maybe leaving that hanging, maybe not. This way of listening to him, listening...creates or invites the opportunity to be present. "You know deep down inside what you really like. Don't be afraid to show it to someone else...If you are playing what you really love--that feeling transmits to people more than...anything." Beautiful.
I remember seeing him at Village Vanguard in 95, expecting lyrical "Frisellisms"..I think it was with Joey Baron and Kermit Driscoll (?) and he was blowing standards like crazy, really shredding through the evening...it was mindblowing
quite possibly one of the best interviews i've ever had the pleasure of listening to - like two people just talking about something they love. nobody ever gets cut off, and Bill has the freedom in his own funny way to go down any road he pleases, with Pablo gently guiding him to various interesting topics. Masterpiece.
That’s really cool hearing him say he’s playing guitar so much lately and he was reminded of how it felt to be younger and in love with playing for the sake of learning and the pure love of music. That’s EXACTLY what I’ve been doing and feeling lately .... and it’s really cool to hear one of my heroes say that!!! Love this guy!!!
And I love you too Pablo - you always speak to Bill with affection and deep respect - its was a pleasure eavesdropping on your conversation here - we are still in lockdown here in London England, but that allows plenty of time to study and practice - gigs are out of the questioner here - all the venues are shut - take care and stay safe !
Thank you for another fantastic interview Pablo. Always a pleasure to hear Bill talk and I'm grateful for your pace and not rushing him through the questions; letting it all bubble around and cook at a gentle temperature, never full blast. Must have been as much fun for you to conduct as it was for me to listen!
Commenting not even two minutes in... I clicked on this instantly when I remembered a fantastic interview with Bill a few years back!! What a treat!!!!
I recently found out about some Jerry Granelli albums that have Bill and Robben Ford playing together on them. A really interesting mix of two of my favourite guitarists.
Thanks for this, it’s lovely to hear him talk and not seem like he’s being forced to answer questions he doesn’t want to talk about. Your questions and sensitivity are great and he’s such an inspiring person to listen to, with a guitar or without.
Can't wait to see you again Bill! Right now I have been playing a lot of your songs on guitar, your stuff is super inspiring and I love your take on covers like In my Life and Live to Tell...
I feel like I've just finished my favourite ever box set, this was simply beautiful, so inspiring, and so much I haven't heard before and like a great box set it's going to be on repeat a few more times at the very least. Thanks Pablo.
Seeing Bill exploring songs on and on after all that years and talking about is so motivating. Good to see him being OK in that days. Thanks for that interview - Axel
Thank you Paul, very nice. I subscribe to all of the comments below. Have you been listening to "Nashville" since last week? :-). Thank you so much Bill, for this and for all the music, for all the art.
"Oh, there's so many things in there that I hadn't even seen before." that's the pure soul of a real musician, learning all life, getting closer and closer to the core.
Thank you Pablo for this wonderful time with Bill. He's one of the best. I do feel as though there was -for me- a major gap; no mention of his extensive work with Zorn and the Naked City years. I was hoping you would go there. That alone would probably take another two hours.
Pablo Held I’ve been following your interviews like a religion for some time now, and they’re all super inspiring and really beautiful. Thank you for doing this, it really means a lot to be able to watch and listen to your conversations! Thanks again!
Great interview. Your back and forth on Monk was very illuminating. The conversation you shared with Bill transcends music. At it's core the interview is as much about self awareness and growth as music. It felt more like sitting in on a session and feeling the inspiration and improvisation happen. Thanks!
Pablo thank you so much for this youtube channel! It has been a great great source for inspiration and learning about jazz in general. I discovered your channel through the helge schneider interview and then started watching all the other videos. Really really great, thank you :)
Hi Pablo! What is the name of the song playing in the beginning of this interview? Ps. I am a huge fan of your youtube channel/podcast. Thank you for doing what you do :)
Hey Samuel, that's "Twenty Years" from the "Quartet" record. There's also a killing version of this song w/ Bill, Elvin and Dave Holland! Thanks for your nice response btw, I'm glad you enjoy the interviews and the channel. If you feel like contributing you can go to patreon.com/pabloheld - my patrons help me to continue this series and I really enjoy engaging with them there. Best, Pablo
This could be a truly GREAT interview if it had been edited somewhat... most of the time, it isn’t clear who the “he” or “him” is even being referred too. Since it ‘s such a VERY long interview, the interviewer has the responsibility to maintain some semblance of FOCUS, as the subject (Bill) tends to give very thoughtful, in-depth - and lengthy - responses to what appear to be completely extemporaneous questions. This just rambles on a bit much, as fascinating as the subject is...

Very well said.
I’ve always noticed that about Bill. No matter if it’s speaking or if it’s playing, his communication style is very “Frisell”.
Bill Frisell is a national treasure and one of the nicest and most humble people that signed my guitar.
Thank you, mate for just another opportunity to see Bill and know he is ok. God bless you.
Thank you Pablo. Thank you Bill.

Bill is a beautiful musician and human being, and I really enjoyed this interview. Keep up the good work, Pablo!
Thank you Tyson!

The album Nashville is the seminal album that bridges jazz with bluegrass.

Nice interview! Would have loved to hear him talk about the Lyle Mays record.
I love Bill! Great talk you had with him! Thanks for putting this out!
I was thinking of requesting this! I'm mad about East/West at the moment, 'The Vanguard' especially.
bill is a rare find--it`s always about that being there and in the present-not past-wow
I thought it was just me who later reviewed my transcriptions and realized I had things wrong. Good too know it's universal.
Bill is such an American treasure. Seeing this lifts my spirits at this low point of national shame and embarrassment for the USA. Thanks Pablo.
Pure gold tocayo!
Thank you so much for this!!!
i love the beard!!!
Thanks for this Pablo :)
A great gift!
Thanks man❤
Thank you for doing this, Pablo.
