What Seth said is so true. I kept buying food from my local coffee shops and hawker centers to support them but didnt realise the ones getting hit the most are the hawkers in CBD. Will definitely drop by Maxwell to support these coming weekends
This place is really prime tourist spot comparable to Newton hawker, Govt can always do more by helping the hawkers lower their overhead cost from rental but then again quite a number of the more popular stores actually make a lot of money the work is hard though but they still make a good living but then again some stores just have too many competitors around so your product more or less has to stand out.
Respect and wishes from China. Thank god the pandemic is over and the influx of visiters is back. I'm visiting in a week and Hawker Food is on my must-try list.
I miss this place at maxwel hawker center they are all so nice and friendly,, the food are cheap and taste so good,, I wont replace this place to any expensive restaurant, maxwel is always the best and other hawker center around singapore too.. Really heartbreaking to watch what is happening to the Hawkers at Maxwell and the other centres. I live in Australia and love visiting Singapore and the Hawkers throughout the Island are the heart and soul of the country. I look forward to going back as soon as it is possible.
My daughter is in Singapore for more than a year now, have not see her and missed her so much. Remembered when we still can travel she used to bring me to eat local food food at hawkers in Singapore when I came for a visit her. She also bring me to eat at Jewel a few times when she's back to Singapore. Really really missed her.
This is so sad. I've always wanted to visit Singapore and head straight to the hawker centers to enjoy as much of the delicious food as my wallet and stomach can handle. I've seen countless videos and articles proudly showcasing Singapore's hawker culture. Just looking at the food from my computer or phone screen makes my mouth water! Having lived in Hong Kong (currently in the Philippines) most of my life eating street food and Canto cuisine, I know without a doubt the food in Singapore is something to try at least once in my life. I dearly hope that my wife and I will still have the chance to do so soon, once it's relatively safer to travel again!

I respect these hawkers. They started at a young age and some of them inherited it from their parents. They are a cultural heritage. But sad to say during the COVID-19 pandemic they were affected & father time catches with them. I missed the food they are serving. ☹️
Maxwell is one of my favorite hawker center too, cause my family usually stay at Bay Sands, and it's not that far by taxi. I really miss eating there jeezz ;((
When I was in Singapore, Maxwell was my local Hawker place. I would get something from there 2-3 times a week and found the variety of food was amazing. I miss so many food things from Singapore, but Hawker food I miss the most. I hope that my favourite stalls survived the bad times. Gyoza, Phad Thai, Kway Teow and the much needed lime juice. Few other varieties, but those were my regular ones. So sad that in UK, can't find lime juice anywhere and also can't find the correct noodles to try and make Kway Teow. Hopefully all the aunties and uncles can survive this - and more importantly, hopefully someone will take over. To me, as an outsider who had 3 amazing years in Singapore, hawker stalls were such an important part of what makes Singapore.
Very saddening to see Maxwell Food Centre stalls, stallholders greatly affected by Heightened Alert measures like I always go there after doing some important stuff and I find peace and comfort there.
We regularly had weekend lunch in one of our local chinese stall until one day they stopped the business and never been found again by many customers. What a lost of an authentic taste and place. Hawker's food can be a great miss to their customers' hearts even until generations.
I 101% salute and respect to all 3 local hawkers business owner,, without which, we can't have this real authentic foods of different dialects group.. Especially to Mr NG from Chinese fritters, 12 years old working at that time and 16 years old take over business due to financial and look after family . Now we looked at our youngster of 12 or 16,they should get wiser , be more hardworking and find some work to do.
On one hand the authorities want to preserve our hawker heritage and get more young people to go into the hawker culture. But then they increase rental. It is absurd and ridiculous to raise their rental. This is the problem with our government, lip service only with no idea what's happening on the ground.
Always their pattern.. Now give you rebate, later raise your bill. Always show nice to the world and yet let local hawker owner swallow the cost..Our hawker center and food given the Unesco real benefit should give to hawker themselves because their hardwork, effort and time.

Nett effect is hawker food prices will have to go up i.e. inflation in a struggling economy. NEA increasing the rent by 40% in a pandemic, also inflating hawker food prices in a struggling economy. What have the government done to assist to keep the hawker culture going? Minimally, they could delay rent increases, allow easier access to foreign labor markets for hawkers..... I am no scholar, I dunno what else they could do. But don't hit the hawkers when they are down!!!

Certain food are meant for takeaway eg fast food. Homemade food is the best but in the 21 century if the factory can do it then it will not be a LOST TRADE. Unless someone have the CALLING to do this
It will be lost in the sense that the mass produced factory stuff is simply not the same as the lovingly produced food from one person to another, the character and pride put into that food cannot be recreated in a factory setting.
when companies-corporations take over, their focus is on cutting losses and making profits. ingredients are sacrificed from time to time and quality cannot be attained because a lot are premade products, packed frozen. many restaurants/f&b chain buy them in bulks.

Its a sector that provides income to a broad range of lower to middle skilled people while providing affordable, convenient meal to large swath of the population. It can, sometimes, be an economic asset but at its core problem most food are not designed for scalability so its limited as an asset. If as a people and country we keep chasing money while not willing to pay for culture and food culture is the most basic culture, then it will dissappear by natural economic force reflecting what we value, who we are

If your food is good the crowd will come Covid or no Covid I work just across the street I eat from the fish soup store almost everyday whenever I have the chance to come into office and also the oyster cake there is pretty classic but costly still it is old school visitors coming should try. Chicken rice with the queue is over rated but still many good chicken rice store here.

There isn't much jobs for Singaporeans to do in Singapore. Being a hawker is among the most common choice a typical common Singaporean can have in Singapore. This is their fate. Didn’t feel like supporting them at all due to the frustration with the new tray clearing law. With the ban on dining in, I emphasised on home cook food instead and managed to reduce my dependence on takeaway to about twice per week. Managed to save approx $350 last month. I rather bring my business to restaurants with proper service from now on. Edit: The top two cliché rebuttals from online good Samaritans wannabes who blindly support the tray clearing initiative : 1) Does insisting that cleaners should continue doing their jobs as before just because we paid for it means that as taxpayers, we can litter indiscriminately in order for cleaners to sweep instead of bring it to the trash bin? Ans: Now this is plain silly. There is a distinct difference between blatant disregard vs standing up for consumers' rights. I advocate diners not making a mess of their tables especially creating "wantons" out of used tissue paper which I find particularly disgusting. But as diners, we can maintain a certain standard of tidiness eg; stacking utensils, piling food waste on the side etc within the confines of our tables so that cleaners may COME to us and perform their jobs efficiently. P.S : The sheer amount of food waste is a consequence of complicated food menus which ought to be served and appreciated at diners' own pace at a proper restaurant with dedicated bussers but are now pushed out factory styled speed which overload cleaners. 2) We returned our trays at SAF cook house during NS with nary a whimper of complaint means that we should be OK with doing it in the public as paying consumers. Ans: This is hypocrisy of the highest order. Now, most people I am acquainted with dislike NS and ICTs. But it is ad nauseam to reminisce fondly about a hated regime in order to justify excessive virtue signaling. I experienced the cookhouse culture pre food catering days. And I HATED washing and clearing the trays in a prison-like environment. Hello... people didn't complain because it is the damned military. I used to work at Maxwell House across the street and bought lunch there all the time. Not in Singapore anymore, back in Indo now. Miss those times.
Honestly, I think the hawker stall look cleaner than the restaurants I have worked at.

Nonsense lah DR Leslie Tay not all the hawker stalls doing well but the finish soup and chicken rice store here is everyday long queue one hor. If your food is good the crowd will come Covid or no Covid I work just across the street I eat from the fish soup store almost everyday whenever I have the chance to come into office and also the oyster cake there is pretty classic but costly still it is old school visitors coming should try. Chicken rice with the queue is over rated but still many good chicken rice store here.
Retribution- the hawkers at those places have been fleecing people for years. High rental are charged by original owners who sublet to others.
Remember Never be a Hawker it’s the worst business only lunch & dinner busy after lunch time in between now you are free to catch flies 🪰👏👏👏

There isn't much jobs for Singaporeans to do in Singapore. Being a hawker is among the most common choice a typical common Singaporean can have in Singapore. This is their fate. Whether it is a good or sad thing is a matter of perspective and how well you understand and agree or disagree with the intricacies of Singapore governance decisions and vision. Hey its a big world and some people do truly enjoying doing service orientated work and selling tissues on the streets while others might not so whatever float one boat then.

Didn’t feel like supporting them at all due to the frustration with the new tray clearing law. With the ban on dining in, I emphasised on home cook food instead and managed to reduce my dependence on takeaway to about twice per week. Managed to save approx $350 last month. I rather bring my business to restaurants with proper service from now on.
Edit: The top two cliché rebuttals from online good Samaritans wannabes who blindly support the tray clearing initiative :
1) Does insisting that cleaners should continue doing their jobs as before just because we paid for it means that as taxpayers, we can litter indiscriminately in order for cleaners to sweep instead of bring it to the trash bin?
Ans: Now this is plain silly. There is a distinct difference between blatant disregard vs standing up for consumers' rights. I advocate diners not making a mess of their tables especially creating "wantons" out of used tissue paper which I find particularly disgusting. But as diners, we can maintain a certain standard of tidiness eg; stacking utensils, piling food waste on the side etc within the confines of our tables so that cleaners may COME to us and perform their jobs efficiently.
P.S : The sheer amount of food waste is a consequence of complicated food menus which ought to be served and appreciated at diners' own pace at a proper restaurant with dedicated bussers but are now pushed out factory styled speed which overload cleaners.
2) We returned our trays at SAF cook house during NS with nary a whimper of complaint means that we should be OK with doing it in the public as paying consumers.
Ans: This is hypocrisy of the highest order. Now, most people I am acquainted with dislike NS and ICTs. But it is ad nauseam to reminisce fondly about a hated regime in order to justify excessive virtue signaling. I experienced the cookhouse culture pre food catering days. And I HATED washing and clearing the trays in a prison-like environment. Hello... people didn't complain because it is the damned military. Soldiers kept their mouths shut unless they want a butt kicking.
Lol you make your dining choice based on whether got people clear plate for you. Even Primary School students can clear their own plate. You really pathetic. Faster hire a few more maid to wash the kitchen after you cook.

If you like paying AND clearing up, it also means you like to do self checkout for your groceries at supermarkets. Consumer rights be damned right? Rather than chasing after cleaning companies to upgrade pay, labour standards etc. You good Samaritans wannabes go and pathologise paying diners to do free labor for these cleaning companies who fail to fulfil their contracts. Guess what, now these same companies are hiring Tray Return Ambassadors at a higher salary than the cleaners who do all the work. Lmao
