You have no idea how cool you are.My last machine stopped working this afternoon and I had no idea what to do about it and a load of clothes to finish. Just fixed one thanks to your video and will have a go at the rest tomorrow. A really heart felt thanks. X
Just had another thanks for the most comprehensive, clearly explained demonstration of this task! I take abandoned machines and clean them up to donate. So far a good cleaning and oiling has been successful. However, this singer 5705c was completely out of time. I foolishly began by attempting to move the needle bar (no more late night repair sessions for me) then gathering the courage to touch the hook timing. Of course, now if either was ok, they are both a mess! Your video is giving me the courage and markers to try it again. This is a drop in bobbin, but fingers crossed I can apply the principles you explained so well! Thank you!
Dude, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!! My machine has been sitting for a few months. I went out and fired it up, after a warm up it dawned on me to oil it up. After that I started to play, it's not working any more, no stitch. So I slowly ran it with no material under it, getting the oil moving. I started to stitch and the all hell broke lose. Needle slammed into the do dad that holds the bobbin, bent needle broken bobbin, so I stopped and looked at it, It's out of timing. I'm new to this so I went to youtube as I do with most any new do it yourself projects. Your tutorial was spot on to my dilemma, I am now stitching like a rookie again. Now I can get back to practicing my stitching. I want to be a master at boat interiors, the good stuff, not the run of the mill get by with it junk. Thank you for the video, it saved me an hour trip one way and I don't know how much money they would have soaked me to set the timing. Thank you!!!!!
+BubaJ1000 I'm just going to take a guess... You smoke A LOT of WEED. And don't have a job. Stick to washing the boats. Interiors are extremely involved.
This is hands down the very best video and verbal instructional I have seen across various and large number of repair demos. Some include lawn tractors, refrigerators, air conditioners, swamp coolers, washing machines, small electrical appliances, electrical wiring, auto and more. I am 65 now and for past 30 years my uncle taught me to be courageous and tackle repairs that at age 27 and widowed with two small children to raise, I would not otherwise had the confidence to even try. He is 90 now and I thank Gof for him everyday. Even though he has always lived 120 miles from me he would come over and you can't believe the building, improvement and repair projects we have done together. Me the student of course and after he got older I went to his place and helped him ! You've by now guessed I am a female and I am so grateful to find your tutorials because now things like my sewing machine need repair and he is no longer able to recall the necessary abilities it takes to complete a job such as this. However, with your tutorial he still could. We joke around with him calling me his "other son". (my own dad passed many years ago). I hope you always hold close the hundreds if not thousands of people whose lives you touch with these exceptional videos and the incredible amount of money it saves all of us!!! I worked on my machine all day yesterday. First time attempt at fixing the hook timing. However it only worked one time and still didnt produce a successful stitch. I was so disappointed as I had machine put back together. I decided to take another look at utube with different search words and bingo! Your video is exactly what I needed! I'm very happy that my previous attempts have not been an entire waste! I had started to think I would have to take machine in afterall and I simply can't afford to. You have saved the day and I repeatedly applaud you and your generosity of time to share this important gift with your fellow DIY'ers!! You are doing God's work too!!! Earth angel! Hugs to you and yours!
These videos are the absolute best tutorials on this subject! Congratulations!! Even though the machine I am working on is a different model, the information you are providing helps me understand exactly what needs to be done and, more importantly, how to do it. I can't thank you enough! Cheers!
I have seen many other videos regarding timing adjustment NONE of them is as complete and explained in detailed as your tutorials specially this one. Thank you and congratulations.
Excellent! Thank you for going through the process, explaining each step and purpose. Thank you for not using unnecessary language and for explaining in a way that a beginner can not only understand but retain. You are a very good teacher. Thank you for posting the video and for saving me $120. The timing on my machine has gone off twice before because of jams, over the course of several years. I haven't been able to use the machine for over six months now because I refused to pay again; for if I did, my service cost would be the same as what my husband paid for the machine. I'm mechanically inclined and knew if I I found a video clearly demonstrating that I'd be able to fix it. Of all the videos I've watched, yours is the only one that shows exactly where, when, why, and how to complete the task. Hooray! Thank you!
This is by far the best video I have seen about hook timing. Clear, logical and easy to understand. I may even be able to find the timing adjustment on my old, but beautifully made, Alfa Z233 which has so far eluded me! Thank you!
This is the best video I have seen, thank you so much! I haven't used my industrial sewing machine for a few years, and after transporting it to the new house , putting it together and starting it appeared that the timing was completely off. Thank you for helping me fix it!
Thank you very much for the very clear two videos about this subject! At least once a year my industrial machine (I now own the shop I've worked at for 9 years) slips up its timing some how. Now I am more confident in trying to fix this myself. My machine is currently messed up (thankfully when it messed up, it was on the last thing I needed to sew for the day) so now I can fix it after I lock up for the day.
I tried all this on a machine I just brought as a non working, spares or repair. After setting up three times, it would still bunch up the thread, and break the top thread. I removed the hook/ basket assy, and on close inspection found a burr on the underside of hook point. This, I suspect had been caused by a needle hitting it. I cleaned the burr off with a very fine diamond lapping file, and refitted / set up timing etc. It now works perfectly.
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! I loved your instruction. I could time my own machine to where it worked but not properly. Now I see theres a step there I totally miss. Thank you xoxoxoxoxxo!!!
I've a Husqvarna Viking Emerald 116. It has a horizontal "drop in" bobbin, and unlike the vertical mechanisms, there doesn't seem to be a system to move the whole revolving hook carrier to follow the ZIG ZAG operation. My problem is that on a wide zig zag setting, it will often miss the rightmost stitch. So while I understand the measurements and spacings you are describing, I'm not sure how to properly split the difference on the hook timing for the left and right stitch. Its really upsetting that the company refuses to sell "non authorized" folks the service manual so I've no way to find the correct procedure. Any tips greatly appreciated. Also, in speaking with a company rep, they suggested I speak to a professional repair person who might obtain a copy for me. If you might be able to do this for me, I'd certainly pay you for your trouble. It was a good machine and I'd like to learn to maintain it myself. Honestly, I can't afford to drop about $80 each time it needs service. Thanks for any help.
Use a small piece of notebook paper or 0.002 automotive feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the hook point and the needle scarf. If there is a slight drag when you try to gently pull the paper between the hook point and the needle scarf then the clearance is correct and you can gently tighten the screws on the drive shaft.
In summary: After removing the presser foot,needle/throat plate and feed dog 1.wind needle down to lowest position, 2. raise needle 2.0 mm 3. check that hook tip is centred on the needle shaft just above the eye of the needle 4. check hook to needle gap with a small piece of notepaper as a gauge (about 0.1 mm) 5.Make any necessary adjustments by barely loosening the set screws of the hook body and holding the drive shaft still while you turn the hook into the correct position. 6 Gently re-tighten the set screws. Check by threading up needle, turning the hand-wheel and seeing if the hook is picking up the thread.
Hi, this is the best detailed video I have seen. Would you be able to help me with my Elna sew green, it does not feed the fabric,it stitches in the same spot and the thread is knotted at the bottom of the fabric...:((( Thank you
thank you very much.. I just have to do this I think to my bernina 180e.. it was fine and all of sudden after I had tried to use a thicker thread.. it started hitting the hook and breaking the needle.. I think I need to adjust the needle bar too, but thank you
After many videos and text, the majority of the info says to have the needle move up from drop dead bottom between 1/16" to 3/32" as the "hook" moves through the scarf . If not the stitch may still be skipped or knotted. [this is for straight stitch only] When the machine does any form of zig-zag the timing must be correct at the left side of the bobbin basket and near as possible 1/32" above top of eye to bottom of the hook thickness.
These are fantastic videos, if I may, I'd like to see you remake these with a better quality camera. Unfortunately, you're working with very small objects and the detail that's lost with low-quality video actually matters. I want to stress that I think this mini-series is excellent and I appreciate the time you've spent making the videos, they would just be that much more helpful if the images were crisp.
Hi, Thanks for the great sewing machine info. I have a White zig zag Model 268 machine. It worked great when it was on the zig zag lever. However, when I moved to the straight stitch position, the hand wheel won't rotate the driver mechanism. Is there a way that I can fix this dilemma? thanks in advance. Holly Rose Lawrence
To clarify...you don't HAVE to remove the positioning finger off to time your machine...that was so they could show us what the hook assembly looks like, correct?
Thank you very much but i have a problem. tension controls how tight or loose the stitched thread is if the bottom and top are not the same tension the threads dont meet in the middle of the fabric and cause unwanted results in your stitches Why this happend
my assembly will not simply slide off the shaft. I had to lightly pry under it to get it off, the only way I can put it back on would be to use an hammer. What's up with that. I am an upholsterer and in this rural area there are no sewing machine repair shops anywhere near me. HELP
O video é muito bom. Gostaria que vocês postassem videos em português, pois minha maquina está laçando corretamente mas a bobina esta travando a linha e não consegui resolver, e o video mas proximo do meu problema foi esse video.
please can you help my Alhpa machine has given good service but is now problematic. I cannot seem to assemble the thread tensioner and the machine keeps jamming. The upper thread is too tight I cannot loosen it by turning the tensioner. It is also making a banging noise.
Good video but how about a zig zag machine, I'm having big problems re-timing one, especially as the manual is written and illustrated by non-English speakers and is unintelligible.
please say "literally" ONE more time. Im sure this is very informative.. but I cannot finish it because your speech makes my skin crawl. maybe i will watch it on mute...

Amazing video. Thanks for sharing. Way above my ability level but great to see just how involved all these parts are.
