    Hello Elle
    Thanks for the informative video. l think you would make a great teacher, it seems not only are you well versed in your profession but you are also very experienced and crucially you understand it in such a way that you can simplify it or put in your own words such that ordinary folk can get it.
    That is where the skill of teaching or imparting knowledge comes in. Some people can explain a complex topic in such a way that the book may appear easier to read, while others can take a seemingly daunting one and make it something less abstract and more tangible. When you can do this then not only are you really good at what you do but it shows you can then transfer it to others.
    You touched upon something which l found very interesting about do not do this if you are mean or bitter or such. Many years ago, talking to a friend who had done auditing while on vacation at uni. He said something to the effect that some people would go to work and if they did not find something amiss they would be very disappointed. So you have this sort of person who strikes fear in client staff because for them as an auditor he needs to find problems instead of merely making sure that the Financial Statements do indeed reflect what they are saying they do and that the end user can rely on them for whatever purposes. Of course the auditor should not take it on blind faith but he should as some say 'trust but verify'. So that topic about people getting nervous when auditors are around is very real whether it is due to ignorance from the client staff about what they really are there for or the fact that some auditors make the relationship adverserial.
    The other thing l found very interesting was... why do auditors want to recruit these people who are outgoing etc? l noticed in school when they were recruiting that they would often go for those guys who were prefects, debate types, sports types etc. Then l would think but why, what does this have to do with auditing especially when you think of the traditional stereotype of an auditor being those shy, technically competent people who had very poor social skills? I realsed later due to the fact that one may need to interface with many people of dfferent backgrounds and in different circumstances you just need to be someone confident and capable of talking to many people in different situations, at the boardroom level to the shopfloor due to the nature of the job. So it made sense that one was an outgoing person and as auditors generally work in teams, the ability to function well in a team is also a valuable asset. So these are some of those things which are not readlly apparent hence there should be more emphasis on these for those wishing to go into this profession.
    As one person said, technical skills will get you into the firm and keep you there whereas your 'soft' or people skills are the ones which will make you rise. At a certain level everyone has the same technical skills so the differentiator becomes your soft skills e.g. politics, negotiating, influencing, leading etc, So this is an interesting aspect of work and in any case as long as there are people at work sometimes who you chat with at the offee machine or who you play golf with or go mountain biking with may be more important than what you actually know!!!

      The time you take you write done your comment is unmatched 🌻🙏🏽 thank you for that. And I appreciate all the good words. The part where soft skills keep is absolute truth. More people need to know that. Loud people need to be more humble and quite people need to stretch themselves. Both equally have a lot to learn

    Elle!!! I’m currently doing my CTA and you’ve made me rethink my training - kaore most people who’ve been on the audit side don’t have good things to say. Late nights, seniors who are “Miranda Prietly” and small pay 😭 on top of that, they need you to have a car! It’s a horror movie that side mara you’ve made my studies to make sense 😂

    • @elle_rankou

      Audit can be rough 😂 I won’t lie but I think a full picture is important. We all struggle but you must choose your own struggle. The lessons from audit do outweigh how terrible in can be tbh 🤷🏽‍♀️

    Hi Elle, did you consider a secondment before becoming an audit manager?

    • @elle_rankou
      @elle_rankou  9 місяців тому +1

      Hey there, yes and I encourage it fully. Even if it’s just short term secondment (3-6months). The reason why I didn’t go is because I was recently married and we were going to live with our daughter and transition her into a new school. I wanted to be a part of that
