I literally did the same thing for Gale. I said that Gale was tapping into the Netherese Orb inside of him and he just didn't know he wasn't using the Weave anymore. Mystra being jealous goddess wanted Gale to blow himself up before he realized what he was doing. I went to 4 levels of Sorcerer first, with a Wild Magic subclass. All the rest are Wizard because Gale is a classically trained Wizard which is helping him tap into the orb.
I’ve always thought sorcerer multi class for Gale doesn’t work bc he’s so contemptuous of sorcerers in dialogue. But your explanation makes so much sense and actually makes a that dialogue hilarious if you imagine that he simply doesn’t realize that’s where his his magic coming from 😂 and actually his blood literally *is* magical (as confirmed if astarion bites him), so that part of sorcerer fits too. This build+rp overcomes one of major hang ups about respec’ing Gale and I’m really excited to try this one out!
Out of all playable characters Gale is for me impossible to multiclass cause he feels so wizardy Wizard, that I just can't imagine him being anyone other than the Wizard. And each time I try different subclass.
In my last playthrough I made him a Light cleric. My reasoning was that the orb sucks all the power out of him (he used to be more powerful referring to himself as an archwizard). So the idea was that as his arcane power got drained his power came from his devotion to Mystra.
I think you just lack imagination because i see gale in many many multiclass combination. It just has to have magic in it. Maybe it's also because you actually don't like his character.
hell yeah!! gale totally makes sense as a sorcerer too, since he lost his powers when he absorbed the orb and got tadpoled, so he could get innate magic from the netherese magic of the orb (like a shadow sorcerer maybe, if that subclass was in the game)!
This is a complete aside from the actual build, but I like the subtle back ground music you put in each video. It's just enough noise that makes it not just you speaking into a mic and it's never loud enough that it over powers what's being said. Every now and again I recognize it, which makes it feel like an Easter egg.
fyi: gale is a human and can use shields. equip ketheric's shield for +1 to spell save DC and spell attack rolls, and later, viconia's walking fortress
Decent argument for Wizard 4 here, the feat obviously and that’s a nice chunk of flexible spell slots that can be swapped at your leisure. Headband (17 INT) is seven Wizard spell slots.
The way you told his story as you leveled him up was enough to make me interested in this build. Sorcerer is my fave class but I didn't think to make Gale one. I am going to try this.
Both in tabletop and bg3 I prefer lightning bolt over fireball since it relies on your OWN positioning rather than the enemy bunching up for you. Way easier to make a line through multiple enemies than to get 2 or more in the radius of fireball, especially if they know you have it.
Just a quick heads up, sculpt spells only works for party members not allied NPCs. I've just learned after trying to help some people from a certain prison
I love how much you thought about how the multiclass choice fits his backstory and narrative development - thanks so much for this! I agree wholeheartedly with you, amazing
I love the concept of this build! Gale is my favourite companion definitely gonna try this build out in a future playthrough! Also I love that you used the SDV Wizard music in the background 😂
I went with draconic as my sorcerer subclass since it in addition to making the ac 13 without armor, it also provides a increases your hp by 1 per sorcerer level. Add in the gauntlets you can find in the Blighted Village (2 ac without armor or shield) and the Infernal Robe. You'll get an ac of 18. For added damage, I chose one of the frost dragon options and paired that with the frost staff in the Underdark, that adds a point of extra damage to all frost spells.
My Gale is obsessed with magic, so as such, I give him as much magic I can. He's first level Storm Sorc, two levels Evocation Wizard, and then nine levels Nature Cleric. This allows him to fly for free as a bonus action and gain proficiency on Constitution checks, the ability to learn spells from Scrolls, and access to most Cleric spells and a nice selection of Druid spells. I gave him 17 int and 16 wiz, taking the Hag's Hair for Int and both Feats are ASI for int and wiz, capping them at 20 and 18 respectively. I then use the Gloves of Dexterity on him to ensure his AC is decent and his initiative isn't ass, and that he can attack with a bow using the Nature Cleric's elemental weapon skill, if needed. It's quite fun, and gives you a ton of versatility, but the lack of spell slots with his huge spell pool means I'm constantly swapping spells around.
I'll try it but I'll strap dual welding feat to get two staves instead of 1. And probably make up for the lower to hit and spell dc by having 2 +1 staves.
Im romancing Gale as a wild magic sorc, ive been wanting to do a class exchange with him, once the romance fully kicks off, so thanks for this! Tho id start level 1 as sorc for con saves
If anyone is using this is a sort of base guide for your COMPANION Gale, you may want to alter the equipment set up and build somewhat depending on what character you're playing. If you're not playing a Wizard or a Sorcerer then you should be fine. However if you are playing as a Wizard or Sorcerer, I would strongly suggest making Gale be a Storm Sorcerer instead of Wild Magic (we can say that he managed to harness the raw magical power in him and convert into energy, can make sense if you word it right, after all he IS Gale OF WATERDEEP one of the best known Wizards this side of the Sword Coast.) and change his equipment somewhat to better fit into a more Electromancer theme; He can still use *The Spellsparkler* , and if you do get the dual wielder feat for double quarterstaves you can also give him either the *Despair of Athkatla* or the *Staff of the Emperor* (that one may be a bit difficult since you need to disarm the Emperor for that) to help boost your overall spell save DC and attack rolls. You can go after the *Potent Robe* for your final build for your companion but you may also instead go after *The Protecty Sparkwall* which can greatly compliment your Spellsparkler. *Lifebringer* is also a good replacement if you're more worried about survivability for your companion but if not then the *Warped Headband of Intellect* is fine or if you want to deal a bit more damage then the *Hat of Storm Scion's Power* is also good if your Electromancer buddy also wants to use Thunder spells. *Cloak of Elemental Absorption* seems like a decent replacer, where as *Sparklehands* is a good honest replacer for your gloves despite only getting half the benefits from it then if not that the *Daredevil Gloves* are a good option. Alternatively if you are also messing around with Thunder damage then you should also see about getting both the *Thunderskin Cloak* and the *Gloves of Belligerent Skies* so that you can cause reverberation with both your Thunder and Lightning spells. *Watersparklers* might be an option but if you think you're getting enough Lightning charges or you don't really find you or your companion in wet environments then the *Evasive Boots* are a good choice to stick to. *Necklace of Elemental Augmentation* is fine, the rings however definitely would need a change since not only are you not playing as a Wild Magic Sorcerer but you're not playing as Gale as an origin character meaning you don't have access to the *Evasive Ring* unless through console commands or mods. In that regard, the *Sparkwall* is an obvious choice to have for an Elecromancer styled build, and your choice of either the *Ring of Arcane Synergy* to give Gale a bit more bang to his buck for his cantrips, or the *Ring of Spiteful Thunder* if you're messing with Thunder damage.
Damn this one looks pretty good, the only thing I’ll probably change is the wizard archetype to illusion, but that’s just me that likes to try to build characters like they would be story-wise and character-wise (gale is heavily hinted to be an illusion wizard in a lot of his events, like when he was using minor illusion to look at himself or to create an image of Mystra. And also the fact that *spoiler alert, stop reading if you haven’t seen the new epilogue chapter*he can become an illusion teacher at the academy if he survives the game without any orb-bullshit (try for godhood or sacrifice) pretty much solidifies this for me.
Spell sculpt either doesn't work on non-evocation spells (i.e. Cloudkill) or possibly doesn't work on non-party member allies (i.e. the Gondians in the Foundry). I tried it in the second encounter of the foundry, on a pocket of enemies and gnomes, with cloudkill and had to reload when it one shotted all the gondians lol. I couldn't remember my summons' HP before the spell to be able to tell if it hit them too
Sculpt Spell only works with Evocation spells. "Create pockets of safety within your Evocation spells. Allies automatically succeed their Saving Throws and take no damage from these spells."
This build was pretty cool I may not use gale very much though. I can’t wait for Wyll and shadowheart those 2 and Karlach are my characters I use a lot
