Yes! What also works is making a syrup with your sugar and adding the food coloring to that and THEN whipping up the buttercream. That also works really well if you're using black cocoa powder as your coloring, since you're properly dissolving and gelatenizing the powder while cooking it'll actually make the final cream smoother. Though it will be harder to imagine exactly how much coloring you'll need.

They said this method works well to make black buttercream too. I saw a video a few days ago. Ive never tried this method myself though. Oops, I didn't hear u say this the first time but I watched again and heard you say it and now that u confirmed it, I'll try it

I’ve been using this hack for years but noticed only recently it’s been discovered by many bakers for some reason? (I’m guessing Mimo has known this for awhile too.) I’ve been doing this with my icing too for cookies to get a true black color. Also if you add a very small tinge of purple to your butter cream it cancels out the yellow and you will get white frosting! It also helps to use a hybrid of butter And shortening of course mostly butter

Because the fat content on buttercream is high, the food color doesn’t get distributed properly. But heating the buttercream melts the butter and it can absorb the food color better…
Food coloring dissolves in water! In the emulsion buttercream is in, that water is trapped between fat molecules and the dye can't dissolve properly, but by melting it you temporarily break the emulsion and allow the dye to dissolve. Then you chill it and re-whip it.

I usually add the color in to my fat if I'm using oil based or gel dyes before adding it to my butter cream I have a section of my freezer dedicated to colored butter because it's just easier to let the butter thaw and then adjust the color
when frosting a cake with a Dark Color, such a Red, Black, Blue, Purple, Green, I always Frost the cake with either white or chocolate, depends on the flavors the customer wants. I get the frosting very smooth, clean crisp edges, pop it in the freezer 30-45 mins, to be sure the buttercream is completely set and solidified. I makes sure the color frosting is the right shade and at room temp. working quick I put a very thin layer of the colored frosting on. make it smooth sharp crisp... and thin! most the time when done the outside looks great like the whole cake is frosted in that color. but in reality, it's a paper thin layer.... less chance of everyone freaking out the next day lmao
Im pretty sure you can use colouring paste aswell! You only need a bit of it and turns into a rich colour, it dosent make the buttercream liquidy cuz its paste
This is because food colouring is water based and the buttercream is fat. You can’t incorporate it completely when mixing but melting the butter will make incorporating easier so the colours are more vibrant.
This might be a dumb question but where do you get your fondant! I live in canada and its very hard to get nice, strong, halal fondant I have a friends birthday coming up and i really want this cake to be special😊
She makes her own out of marshmallows and icing sugar. She microwaves a whole bowl of marshmallows and then stirs them until they're melted. Then she adds some using sugar to thicken it a little. Then she runs lard (I think) all over her clean countertop and puts the rest of the bag of icing sugar on the counter and dumps the melted marshmallows in the center and from the outside in, she mixes the icing sugar and marshmallows together. Hopefully you can find her video of it cuz hers is a much better explanation 😂 hope it helps 🥰

That’s really cool but for black I usually use chocolate frosting and mix in a few drops of black, that achieves a really nice colour

I just make chocolate buttercream and put a little black dye in it. That works better than starting with white.

Are you sure it was Dutch process? Usually it’s black cocoa. That’s what I use and it’s delicious!

I would suggest trying out powdered food color. Worked for me, but maybe it was just the brand I used.
