    Dear Dr. Lewin,
Due to these lectures I have finally achieved my dream of becoming a plasma physicist. I just finished my internship at the french tokamak and at ITER and now I am applying for a Phd. You are one among some of the people who transformed my life and I thank you with all my heart.

This website contains all my 94 course lectures (8.01, 8.02 and 8.03) with improved resolution. They also include all my homework problem sets, my exams and the solutions. Also included are lecture notes and 143 short videos in which I discuss basic problems.
    ENJOY!

+Lectures by Walter Lewin. They will make you ♥ Physics.
Professor Lewin, I never liked the way my school teachers taught me. I've always believed in self studies. Which made me believe that I have a certain potential in the field of research.
After I've come across your lectures, I believe you are the right person who can guide me comfortably to this.
It is a great feeling. :)

I gotta admit it, these lectures are just a golden ore of information, they helped me understand more things then I could do on my own in 2 years. Also, they are the embodiment of how physics should be done.

Your lectures are amazing! I've been self-studying (won't be in college until fall) and your lectures are truly inspiring. Lately I've gotten where I want to actually *see* the physics I'm learning about, and not just all the equations (although I do love the math behind it) and your lectures satisfy that need perfectly! I plan on pursuing a doctorate in physics (even though it's way down the road), and I hope I can become even half as good as you in inspiring students!

This is beautiful. I studied philosophy at UCLA and now almost 10 years later I’m learning physics. This lecture series is perfect because you throughly explain the theory and almost more importantly make it real with demonstrations. It’s kind of sad that with all this knowledge (free MIT lectures) general knowledge seems to be regressing into a world of conspiracy theories and nonsense. I do think the traditional lecture format, as powerful as it is, will soon be replaced by other forms of teaching like the channel Physics by Eugene... anyway, for now a proper lecture series hits the spot for me :)

Professor I have a question... We say when electric current flows through a spring it compresses because of attraction due to magnetic force ... But why do we ignore the fact that there has to be some electrostatic repulsion between the electrons flowing in the spring... As since we know electrostatic repulsion is far greater than magnetic attraction in this case... The string should rather elongate... ( This question was asked in jee and I had a doubt in the answer... The answer was that spring would compress when current flows through it)

B has to be increased as the proton emerges from the gap in which it is accelerated. If the B field goes to zero during the short time that they spend in the gap, then the protons will cross over in a straight line. Ask google what the B-field is when the protons are in the gap.

    • @shajeelaselvadhas1616

    • @lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259

I DID NOT tell you that. Read my answer again.
I wrote >>> If the B field goes to zero during the short time that they spend in the gap,>>>
When the protons have reached their maximum energy they can be tunneled to a target. Of course, there would be NO B-field in that tunnel. In most cases, the target is inside the cyclotron, in which case there is no tunnel. - ask google.

    Dear Mr. Lewin,
.I would like to ask you a little question I could not find an answer to
Why in a magnetic field, when all sizes are constant, is there a perfect circular motion? How does the speed or acceleration ?generated by the magnetic force make it perfect every time

    • @lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259
      @lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259  6 років тому

I am not an expert on designs of synchrotrons. The facts are that q*VXB is constant enough for the protons to stay inside the vacuum chamber and to be accelerated every time they cross the gap and when the B-field has to change as V increases. *I suggest you read up on the designs of synchrotrons and on the LHC*

It's incredible how easily American citizens say this: "Atomic bombs were dropped on two cities and the second world war was over". When I heard this for the first time from my American teacher of English I was shocked... Still shocked hearing this from the professor. Something is wrong with this world if so brilliant and knowledgeable people can be at ease with such diabolic action.

hello professor , I have a doubt. At 13:14, the velocity of electron and direction of current are opposite to each other. In that case the v cross B and Fleming's left hand rule will give the different directions of force. I'm confused about this because if we consider the electron then it should feel a force up not down or am I completely wrong? and when you put bar magnet on the demonstration near the beam it bends down when the red side means the north of the magnet faced to beam which showed that indeed the force was downward when the field lines where out of the plane

@@lecturesbywalterlewin.they9259 Now I get it, the whole conductor moves in the downward direction that's why the electrons also move the same way. Thankyou 😊

If no work can be done on a charged particle by the magnetic field, how can the
motion of the particle be influenced by the presence of a field?

The gravitational force by the sun on the Earth is perpendicular to the Earth' velocity. Thus that force does NO work. Therefore its speed will not change but its direction will change. F=q*VXB sane thing! F is always perpendicular to V.

How are you able to assign a potential to a particle in a magnetic field? Very counterintuitive, since the potential depends on the velocity. Enlighten me.

there are many decent books. At MIT I used for 8.02
Physics for Scientists & Engineers by Douglas C. Giancoli.

Sir and for changing the frequency of the cylclotron twice each, do we do it manually or is there any other mechanism?

how long does it take for the charge to go around? that will give you your answer. In one rotation the field has to change direction twice.

Professor, at 13:44 I believe you made a mistake with the forces applied to an electron with velocity. They should be flipped 180 degrees. Not that it truly matters that much :)
