The clearest red card EVER?! Taras Stepanenko's shocking foul (Ukraine) v Moldova
Tuesday, March 26th, 2013
Ukraine picked up a decent 2-1 home win over Moldova on Tuesday evening and look likely, along with Poland, to put pressure on England and Montenegro.
Their victory was though somewhat marred by one of the most disgraceful challenges ever seen on a professional football pitch.
In the 92nd minute Ukraine continued going forward and the ball was lofted into the box for Taras Stepanenko to challenge for.
What transpired was a high flying Kung Fu attack on a Moldova defender that immediately caused gasps throughout the stadium.
Danish Referee Kenn Hansen couldn't get his card out quick enough -- so shocking was the foul.
As one of our Twitter followers remarked, it makes Nani's recent controversial sending off during Manchester United v Real Madrid, look like a cuddle!

I've seen far worse. The guy didn't realise he was there and made no attempt to push through and hurt the defender. Unfortunate. Makes Nani's recent red card seem even more ridiculous!

Doesn't need to be on purpose for it to be a foul. If the tackle is reckless, careless or uses excessive force it is a foul. And a red card can be issued for anything the referee considers serious foul play.

That's unbelievable.
You don't see it in the video because it ends too early, but that's clearly what he's doing at the end. The ref's job when he gives a red card is to ensure that the player leaves the field of play, but here you can see the ref seeing the player going back towards the hurt player and letting him do it. Bad foul, but with no intent to harm. Deserved red card

I don't get what's with all those hate comments. I mean, it was stupid of him, but if you look at the player, his aim was the ball.
Clear red card, 5-8 matches penalty and that's pretty much it, he obviously didn't want to do what he did.
Speaking of head-shots, I don't find this deserving red card way more than all those flying elbows in the face everywhere, which should be punished with a clear red as well.
Accident or not, you don't raise your boot as high as he did, deserves a sending off for his stupidity if anything.

A high leg above someones waist is always a yellow card no matter what. Kicking someone in the face, no matter how accidental is red.

Al menos Stepanenko, fue a preocuparse por la salud del otro jugador, es evidente de que no fue a golpear con ánimo de hacer daño. Pepe le golpeó varias veces más, y pide perdón con falsedad. At least Stepanenko, was concerned about the health of another player, it is evident that there was a hit with the intention of doing harm. Pepe hit him several more times, and falsely apologizes.

Overhead kicks are very very rarely penalised, so before you start trying to insult people, get your facts right.
Compared to Nani there were more players near him. He couldn't oversee them and should have expected that one of them would try to get the ball too.
