What makes a singer great is the emotion in their voice when they sing. So if you think his singing sounds weird, then you really aren't listening and appreciating the emotion put into his song

It was annoying, my friend would play it on repeat and all id hear was 'da-da-da-da-tildaaaaaaa' Then I started to find it funny and so therefore tolerable and nostalgic. Now I actually enjoy this song completely. This song is the 'Star Wars - The Phantom Menace' of music for me.
In case you haven't managed to crack it yet by using tabs, you should definitely give learning it by ear a go. Watch his finger picking and left hand fretting, and listen to the notes as clearly as you can, it'll help develop your ears by a long shot and ability to pick things up by ear and directly translate what you hear onto the guitar. Some advice, but it has been a year so you've probably got it down by now :)

+Qahhar Abul As I tried to figure out the way joe plays it, I figured hes playing in open d major, D A D F# E D. and watched what hes playing its relatively simple, just a hassle to tune guitar to that each time lol.
