    I make it a point to no longer just grab useful information from forums and UA-cam without stopping to say THANKS!! Instead of paying $1000 for a new refrigerator or $315 for parts and labor from a repairman I paid $75 for the diagnosis and about $60 for the parts and with the help from this video as well as the video for replacing the defrost timer I did it myself! Thank you so much for taking the time to produce this helpful video. The amount I saved may be hundreds of dollars but the confidence of doing it myself when I was this close to hauling it to the landfill is priceless!!

    Thank GAWD my boyfriend is a bike mechanic and can fix cars, too. He will make short work of this. I could do it myself, with this terrifically informative video (THANK YOU!), but I will cook him a nice dinner instead. We've got about an inch of frozen ice in the bottom of our "Frost-free" freezer right now. Our GE Profile fridge with no icemaker (hard to find, but I did it) has been an AWESOME appliance. I just LOVE my GE fridge. Thanks again for this vid.

    You should first test the defrost thermostat before replacing it, unless you're certain it's causing the problems. You can set your multimeter to R X 1 ohms, and place each of the multimeter's leaders on a wire from the thermostat. When the thermostat is still cold, it should read 0 on the multimeter. If the thermostat is warm (40-90 degrees F), it should produce an infinity reading. If your results aren't consistent with these values, I'd recommend replacing the thermostat.

    I thank you for your advice and we discovered it was the big button on bottom of fried that turns was turned the wrong way. We turned it the opposite direction and and the water stopped immediately. I think it was from the purifier being turned the wrong way. Thanks for your advice very much. Have a wonderful day.

    Sorry to be clearer to my previous comment, pins 4 and 5 read 34k when frozen when testing (I think) the thermistor. Also when in ice water after I removed the frost build up it read around 18 so it seems the thermistor attached to the top of the coils is working.

    Hi Steve When testing the thermostat I would just put the tester on any side of the wire? Or do I need to cut them & then test from there? Sorry Im still a newbie at this stuff! I did managed to change my defrost heater but now I could have dont that in vain since this could really be my issues. Does it matter what kind of wire marettes are used? I know nothing about these except for now they connect old to new wires together.

    Hi Thanks for being here :). I just put in a defrost heater. It read 26 ohms before I put it in. When it came on the the defrost cycle. I could see through the vents it was glowing red. Then a few minutes later it turned off. Should I expect to see a "Glow". Thank you

    Great video. My GE GSL22 has been giving me headaches for over a year now. It's loud at times, but just recently it stopped cooling. Fridge and freezer are not being cooled. The evaporator cover is covered in frost. After googling around, it looks like it might be the defrost thermostat? thoughts?

  • @movietime111

    Does the defrost thermostat explain having condensation in the refrigerator side of the unit? Looks like perhaps the defrost cycle removes the condensation in the entire fridge? Thanks,

    • @partselect
      @partselect  10 років тому

      Hi movietime111, thanks for your question. Most condensation issues are related to are leakage into the refrigerator compartment that may be caused by damage to door gaskets, or door closer cams. I'd recommend checking both of these areas for leaks to solve the issue. Best of luck!

    I have a GE Profile Side by Side fridge that stopped working after a power outage that lasted a few days. The condenser fan is running and the compressor is warmish, but the fridge/freezer cannot get below room temperature (the freezer gets to about 63 and the fridge stays in the 70s). I do not hear any "clicking", but I'm also unable to locate the overload relay on this particular model to check and see if it is broken. There is also no ice buildup anywhere. Any help would be welcome! Thanks!

    I have a Samsung RS2630sh side by side fridge and i have three questions: 1) My condenser FAN on the rear bottom is located between the condenser/radiator and the big black bottle. The air flow is away from radiator and towards the bottle? Is that the normal/good air flow direction?
    2) The freezer side keeps condensing at the bottom and great huge ice piles up inside the freezer at the bottom engulfing the bottom tray. What do i need to fix to do away with this icing issue once and for all?
    3) The fridge side suddenly stopped cooling. What is the fix for this?
    Thank you so much in advance for your help.

    I plugged it back in yesterday and it was working and I also vacuumed under in back and it was working like a champ. . Even making ice. . This morning back to Square One the ice was starting to defrost again and I cannot hear the compressor kicking on so.. any clue why it worked for a while and then back to square one. .. I'm going to check with multi meter but I have to purchase one my husband does not have one and I guess I'll go from there..

    Hello Sr. thanks for the video. I just change this part yesterday your video helped a lot. I believe that is still frosting up. Right now is cool on both freezer and fridge. I will check behind panel again in a few days. If it has frost, what other components can I check. From other videos I see that it can be timer or heater. I dont want to keep buying parts. Should I replace timer first to see if it works or should I change heater first? How can I test this part and easy way? This is my model Kenmore 10552214100

    • @partselect
      @partselect  8 років тому +1

      Frost normally occurs on the evaporator coils as part of the refrigeration process and it is removed in the defrost cycle that occurs about once a day. The heater, thermostat and timer are all part of the defrost circuit and any of these components can cause a no defrost symptom. The heater can be checked for continuity with a multi-meter and the timer can be checked for voltage output
      with a meter as well. You can also manually advance the defrost timer into a defrost cycle to test the heater and thermostat. If no defrost cycle is performed, the problem may be with the heater or defrost thermostat, but could also be a defective timer that doesn’t supply power to the heater circuit. If the defrost cycle performs normally, then the problem would have been the
      timer.

    The new thermostat I got did not have differentiated coloured wires. I'm guessing it makes a difference which wire goes where. I oriented the thermostat seemingly the same as the one I was replacing. it the same with the wires coming out the same side. Heater does not come on now, it did before. Shall I just switch the wires?

    • @partselect

      Karen Burleigh-Kerr On a defrost thermostat with only two wires it does not matter if they are reversed as long as they are attached to the same two wires from the original thermostat.

    Hello Steve, I have a GE SS GSS201EMBWW, I replaced the defrost heater from partselect a few months back. Now the top of my freezer is warm and so is the fridge but the bottoms of the freezer and fridge in my side by side are both amazingly cold. I am wondering is it the evaporator fan but cannot locate the fan thus far. I know it might sound like a dumb question do you know where the evap fan is? Also I cannot hear the fan. Thanks Charles

      @partselect  10 років тому

      Hi Charles, thanks for getting in touch! It sounds like you have made a logical diagnosis based on the symptoms you have observed. The evaporator fan motor is mounted on a bracket that is located just above the evaporator defrost thermostat that you had previously replaced. Here's how we replace the evaporator motor: Refrigerator Repair - Replacing the Evaporator Fan Motor (GE Part # WR60X10185). Thanks for watching, and good luck with your repair!

    @partselect Full Model Number is: GSL22JFPC BS. I have been watching several of your videos and have found them to be very informative and helpful. A second (and possible unrelated to the defrost thermostat) is that my evaporator fan makes a whirling or humming noise like a ghost that can be very loud. I was thinking of changing out the main board or the fan itself, but would rather not do both due to cost. Any suggestions? Thanks again

    Hi Steve I have a GE model# GSC23KSTA SS side by side refrigerator, and I'm having a issue with the fridge and freezer. Whenever I change the temperature setting on either the fridge or freezer the refrigerator will not be able to hold the temperature and will continue to rise. This happened twice already, each time we unplug the fridge and let it defrost for 2 days. Both times a lot of water will appear on the floor. After we reconnect it and seems to work fine until we adjust the temp. Can you let me know what may be causing this? The reason we were changing the temperature in the first place because we found the stuff in the fridge and freezer was too cold.

    • @partselect
      @partselect  9 років тому

      vince c The most likely cause for that symptom would be that you have a defrost problem. Check the defrost heater and defrost termination thermostat for continuity. Does the evaporator fan in the freezer section appear to be running?

    Great video. I have a GE GSS23LGTA WW fridge that has a couple of issues. First when I use the water/ice dispenser on the door the entire fridge turns off until I disengage the dispenser. Yesterday the freezer stayed about 30 degrees and the fridge at about 45-50 degrees for about 12 hours, then got cold again like normal. • @partselect
      @partselect  10 років тому

      Hi Jeffrey! Thanks for the question! The first thing to check would be the evaporator and condenser fans as well as the compressor. The fans should both be running at the same time as the compressor when the refrigerator is trying to cool. If the evaporator fan is running you should feel sufficient airflow to both compartments. If there is insufficient airflow then the problem is most likely a defrost issue that is preventing proper airflow to the freezer and fresh food compartments. Remove the evaporator cover and check for frost buildup on the evaporator coils. If there is a severe ice or frost buildup then you will need to check the defrost circuit components. Check our repair content for help in troubleshooting your refrigerator. Hope this helps!

    On the top IN THE REFRIGERATOR under the freezer section there is a abut a one and a half inch hole, which drips out water and fills about a glas a day. I disconnected the ice maker and it still keeps dripping so that was a wrong lead. Is this the thermostat since it is cooling too much?

      The defrost cycle normally shouldn’t run any longer that 30 minutes at most. You may have a problem with a temp sensor or the control board if the cycle lasts longer than that.

    +partselect Hi! Looking for help: freezer defrosting (partially) intermittently
    GE profile side by side (TFX22PPBC)
    just started in the last month, noticed because water from ice maker drains out dispenser leaving puddle. But sometimes when I notice it the ice (and items) have refrozen. Was rare (1x a month last month) now becoming more frequent (daily) sometimes I am able to catch it before full defrost (Popsicles in top basket melted but meat in lower baskets still frozen) and if I turn the freezer temp control knob slightly the compressor kicks on and it runs (for quite some time) and everything is back to normal again for a undetermined time (sometimes doesn't run again and partial defrost starts again- sometimes I have come back a few hours later to compressor working and everything fine.
    Have not noticed any issues with fridge side being warm or items going bad at all.
    Would this be the same issue as seen in the video?

    Hi, I have a Roper (mo. RT21LMXKQ09) and I have a problem with the coils. They frost up like i guess they're supposed to normally do, but they don't defrost, causing the freezer to frost up too much and warms the inside of the freezer, I've replaced the defrost timer but that wasn't the problem because it's still doing it. I think its the thermostat but i don't know for sure. please help! I've already had to throw away 100$ worth of food, I'm not sure what to do.

    I have a Whirlpool refrigerator and freezer side by side and air has quit blowing out of the vents to the refrigerator part. Water keeps over flowing the pan under refrigerator and puddles all in my floor. Please help me to know what it is making it do that and what I can to repair it. Thanks

      +Amy Sale It sounds like you may have a defrost problem. Does the evaporator fan blow air in the freezer section? If so, then we would assume that the fan motor is good and that the evaporator has probably iced over. This would indicate a faultydefrost heater, termination thermostat or defrost control board. If the fan was not turning, then the evaporator fan motor is bad.

    My Candy Fridge Freezer will not switch of on the fridge part, everything is freezing. When I switch it off at the power, it will come back on but will make a clicking noise, then stop after about 4hrs, is it the thermostat.

    Advice for anyone with a three wire thermostat. One wire is for delaying the fan. I have a Maytag with a three wire d. thermostat. It is discontinued by manufacturer. The only aftermarket I could find specifically for this was a rip off at $70. I assumed I could just replace this with a two wire thermostat and eliminate the fan delay. But I could not find anyone willing to give me advice on that. So I ordered the cheapest Two wire thermostat ($7) from Ebay, that was for Maytag, although they have a universal one for $5. These type clip on thermostats are basically the same. They are only a circuit breaker. When fridge is cold all the time running the circuit to the two wires have continuity but it is not making a circuit until the defrost timer cycles into defrost then there is complete circuit and the defrost heater heats up to melt ice on evaporator. When hot enough the thermostat points disconnect and the circuit is broken keeping the heater from overheating. Thereafter the defrost timer goes out of the cycle until the next cycle. So all this thermostat does is to make a circuit to the heater. If other fridge do not need a third wire for fan delay why should mine? It don't need this fan delay. I connected the one wire to the wall plug and the other to the heater and it works great. Just figured it out. On your three wire plug the wire that is off to itself is the fan delay. Just cut all wires. Put a wirenut on the fan delay wire and fill the cavity with silicone. Then I spliced one wire to the plug where it fed the defrost and the other wire to the plug that goes to heater,. Silicone the cavity and plug it in. Cant hurt a thing, it is just making a circuit. I was told at parts house my defrost timer was $90 but they could give me a good deal at $65. I bought a Maytag timer for $14 on ebay. So I saved $114 on these parts. It is a crying shame the world is nothing but a rip off unless you do like the big fish and avoid the hook.

    BTW, I used heatshrink butt connectors instead of electrical tape. Its much more secure and waterproof.

    I just checked the bottom of fridge and it's freezing a quart size cup of water. I replaced the thermistor and defrost heater on Oct 28. I don't want to replace the freeze cracked water tank with my new one if the fridge is still freezing things. HELP!

      Most of the time when you encounter this problem the Defrost Thermostat (part # ps1017716) needs to be replaced. If that doesn't appear to be the issue check your Temperature Sensor (part # ps304103).
      Good luck with your repair!
