Can You Beat GRIME With Only Consumables?

- I have a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career.
If you put firebombs in your game, I WILL find you. And I will burn your world to the ground.
GRIME is very quickly becoming my favorite metroidvania. If you haven't tried it out, I would highly recommend it - the (free) new DLCs have breathed even more life into this game.
GRIME has several consumables. But I have no idea what they do, how they work, or if they're even any good. Several of them are firebomb-type weapons though.
You know what we have to do.
Can you beat Grime with only consumables, and without parrying? Time to find out.

Big thanks to @demajen for their beautiful maps. Couldn't have found all the bosses/secrets I needed to make this run a reality without them.
Demajen has a HUGE catalog of maps for other metroidvanias - give them a look, and maybe buy them a coffee for their efforts : ko-fi.com/demajen

GRIME Dev here, and this video is confirmed based.
Can confirm. No bias. Is based.
Thanks for making my personal favourite metroidvania.
Dev team is confirmed based for all the effort being continued to be put throughout the game, well done
So, out of curiosity, DID that enemy at the beginning get changed because of the "Parry Only" run?
Thank you for making it free
Since you've done several of them by this point, Lemon, let me say this. I think doing these types of runs, where you had to add in an item at the beginning but then only use that item, is completely fine. At the end of the day, it's about the spirit of the run, if that makes any sense.
Not only do I agree with you, but I would also argue that it is even more in the spirit of the run than using "default unarmed attack move here" until getting the item. Plus it will save Lemon time and anguish, making videos easier for him to make, and on occasion will allow us to see some fun and weird interactions not possible in normal play.
Seconded
Eleventhed
True, but splitting "firebomb" is kinda op when unlimited
Hey Picrewed PFP!
Oh hey, more Grime! Reminded me to add that to the wishlist and realized there's a demo available too so I've got my evening planned!
Please do enjoy it is amazingly fun and very unique for a souls esque game
I found it free on Epic and it looked cool so I thought i'd play it. Still haven't gotten around to id but the backlogs uploaded it so its the perfect time.
Keep an eye on Epic's weekly freebies, they've given it free before so chance it might get repeated.
i heard they making a sequal
I love to see that the devs have continued to add quality of life things based on feedback, that’s so refreshing to see
This was great fun to watch! Thanks for the shoutout, and I'm glad the maps helped!
Any time! I meant what I said about making maps for Salt and Sanctuary / Salt and Sacrifice by the way! Let me know if you have any interest in pushing those to the front of your pile!
To think Yon would be the killer of this run. What a turn of events.
Happy to see you give this game more love Lemon.
grind making new content and listening to its community is so based, its just sad more companies/dev teams dont do this more
It would cut into their profits and their "minimum common denominator" mentality.
It is ... difficult, the incentives for it are not quite there... and communities are very often not the most friendly people towards devs. Profit margins are a thing of course, but also at times you have people be confidentally objectively wrong about things and they can still blow up all the damn time.
I'm a simple man. I see The Backlogs post a video, i click like
I’m a simple man. I see a good comment, I click like
I'm a simple man, me also click like
I’m a simple man. It’s just honest work~
I'm a simple man, I agree with you and click like
Yeah pretty much
every time you need a heal in grime, you have to ask a question, is it more effective to use your body, your breath, or the fetal pearls
Yup, the design of this game has just improved over time.
I know the end of that video was supposed to be super emotional, and it was because you are both an excellent challenge runner and story teller, however... I am a dark human being.
All I could think of was "INHALE!" *insert prolong Kirby sucking noise*.
Damnit, now I can't look at the ending without hearing the kirby inhale sounds.
I thought i would share that.
I, not long ago, did on stream a Grime play through. And when i first tried it, i found it a bit boring with the weapons. Then, i chose to restart and played like your previous challenge, without weapons.
And i had a huge pleasure doing the game that way. A real nice time to me and i loved it whole
Grime is awesome, the story is really hard to understand at first, but when you get into it it changes the perspective, like you no longer feel bad about killing little dudes inside cosmic gigant (yes that's more or less what is going on), but you realise you're fighting to bring it back to life, and the little dudes suffer anyway, duo to... existence, love the game 10/10.
I hate that the end made me cry, but also, I feel like I need a cry, so thank you, lemon. I will forever follow your teachings
Lemon the thing about fire (and while this sadly can’t apply to the xcom world with the psychics only or this world) is that it is both a destroyer and a giver of new life, for after the fire fades new life is allowed to bloom
God, I just wanna say-I love your voice. I love the pacing of your videos, your narration, edits. I've been here since you had less than 50k, and I've enjoyed literally every video you've uploaded. You're always a highlight to me day, and I pften rewatch your videos when I'm bored. Your content is just that good. Thank you for being a thing.
The fact that this game has a woefully inadequate wiki is a crime. It's such an interesting world.
It took me seeing this video to realize that horrible nightmare tentacle lightning land is probably supposed to represent nerves and dendrites and that you're inside a giant brain.
I noticed that too, that it's a lot of human anatomy, which makes me wonder if the entire game is almost a representation of a disease like cancer. Eating and destroying everything around it until all of it is gone
@@logantillman7409its not...its more...were a...form of life...and for us to exist...the body that came before has to die...and it did already...shidra...is just keepinf the corpse going...so heres the question. Allow him..or give them release from there misery
@@logantillman7409 it think it's an analogy for a pregnant lady with cancer. You have the world pillar at the centre which is her spine. You have the nerveroot (nerves) growing out of the spine. Feaster's lair is where the tumor grows with it's bile and bony growths (some cancers actually cause boney malignant tumors). And then there's childbed, the womb as it were. Where a child is destined to die with it's mother
You’re at the nape, where the central nervous system is.
Think of it like a giant body, laying slightly askew (paint me like one of your French girls style).
World pillar and nerve root are the nape, base of the neck.
Palace/cenotaph and lithic/weeping are arms/hands.
Feasted lair is the belly, and childbed is the womb (the body we are in is that of the mother)
During shidra’s fight we climb up the neck to the head, and that’s where we absorb the world.
So glad another Grime challenge is here, I was scared you weren't gonna make another
Man I loved the last video on this, so excited to watch this one!
Your writing is phenomenal Lemon. I loved the ending. Keep up the good work! I’m always excited to see a new video from you.
I just want to say how much I love the bits where you get really introspective about the plot of these games you do. I know it's kind of a bit, a performance to add drama, but I also know that the reason I love all these games you play is because they're exactly how they make me feel. I love this game, and I strongly remember the overwhelming sorrow I felt after the Final Performance - just, this beautiful city built purely to be consumed and destroyed, and all these ugly, twisted creatures pushing back because they wanted to live. I felt Shidra imprisoning the player was the right answer, almost, but I had to keep going anyway. It really speaks to me, and thank you for doing that. It makes this more than just a challenge run video.
Just wanting to say that ive been a subscriber since the first couple of salt and sanctuary challenge videos and to keep up the good work!
Hearing the rain formerly known as purple sent me for a trip 20:50
Lol same i was really confused at first
God i love the story telling of this game and your journey threw it. Hope you have fun lemon.
LEMON YOU FORGOT A BIG BOSS! You still need to fight Dreamborn Terror!
Can't wait to see Baldur's Gate 3 Throw Only run.
i swear, everytime i watch one of these videos im like "aw sweet, another challenge run that only an insane person would do" and by the ending im like "man was always the truest monster, for he convinced himself he was god, then punished all who worshiped him" it never ends with "and then i beat the game and it was fun." i love it everytime
I gotta thank you for introducing me to Grime with the Parry-only-run. I got quite interested in the worldbuilding aspect of it, and when it became free on Epic I wasted no time to play it myself, new DLC included, and my God it is a blast. I think I've never seen a better NG+ application in a game before, usually it's just "enemy more bulky, enemy more damage". This is one of those games that does deserve to try and get all achievements, and it's even fun to do so. Of course, my first run was a parry-focused build, but with the addition of the Lantern weapon because I'm not a masochist (?). It is amazingly rewarding to learn to play like that. Buuuut, if you want to really break the game in a fun way, going full HP scaling is definitely busted once you get certain weapon and the trait that allows you to spawn wasps when Breath is at full. You can literally weaponize the little Breath fragments/consumables, and it deals a stupid amount of damage. It is also hard until you do get to that point, unless you use the respec coins, but I definitely recommend trying it at least once.
My biggest criticism of Grime, surprisingly to me, is that your only choices in the game/story are to either fulfill the role expected of you and destroy everything and everyone in the world (which feels like a double-gut-punch because you are forced to kill the happiest and most promising people in the world well before you ever learn anything about this), or to become a more "normal" being in a now near-empty world with no hope for a meaningful future (and all of the people you might have bonded with being dead by that point).
The world itself is revealed to have already been victim to some kind of inescapable cosmic tragedy, with the husk of the world you find yourself in being in such a sorry state because it was all the equivalent of a horrible miscarriage and what's left is basically bits of the corpse given life by remnants of the life the infant was supposed to have.
That might be bearable if either ending gave you any closure or answers about what comes next or whether the being you become is just a matured parasite or potentially the start of something new, but nope.
It's beautiful and thought-provoking, but too depressing and lacking in closure/answers for me to feel comfortable with it.
To be fair, that same situation (miscarriage) IRL is just as depressing and lacking in closure as how you're describing, so perhaps what you're feeling is meant to be.
Inspired by your channel and the Firebomb Academy, I decided to do a challenge run of my own: Attempting to beat Dark Souls 1 with only Pyromancies. And let me tell you, the beginning section is rough.
Admittedly, part of it is my own fault. For my starting gift, I grabbed the Old Witch's Ring for lore reasons. It made sense to have that since I'd be joining that covenant for the pyromancies and the waifu.
However, the main issue is the simple fact that the people who can upgrade your pyromancy flame are locked behind bosses. As a result, having enough damage is an eternal struggle.
Assylum Demon: Killable without hassle.
Tauros Demon: The starting fireballs don't do enough to kill it. I had to exploit my way into Lower Undead Burg in order to free Griggs early and then grind my way up to purchase the Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring.
Capra Demon: I haven't beaten yet. Repeatedly fighting it has led me to develop an irrational hatred of dogs and stairs. You don't have enough damage even with the ring. You would if the boss was alone, but because it has those two dogs, you realistically have to take them out first before focusing on capra and the remaining Fireballs aren't enough. I did just go and grab Power Within, so I'm confident I could beat him soon. I'm planning on casting that after getting rid of the dogs and getting the damage buff to carry me through.
Quelaag: Hell. I always knew she would be hell. I'm planning on using the Deathcam skip I've seen Ymfah use in order to sneak by, but I haven't had any luck yet. It's harder than he makes it look. There's one pyromancy that deals half Physical damage in the DLC, so I'm planning on coming back with that at the end of the game in order to see if you can truly defeat every boss pyromancy only.
Started watching this the other day, but didn’t get very far before I was convinced to buy the game myself.
Just beat the Feaster. I’ll be back when I’ve beaten the game to finish the video.
Godspeed, Lemon.
'' i am a pious man, not 1 thing will stray me away from my chores! ''
Backlogs posting a video
'' damn, i gotta watch this! ''
WHAT KIND OF POETRY WAS THAT , GODDAMN THE CHILLS
The fire bomb academy grows stronger.
Please more Grime videos! Need this game to become popular enough people make lore videos so I know wtf I played through
YAY! It's finally here. I've been hyped for seeing this since Backlogs told me this was coming this month. I'm so happy you came back to this, Grime is by far one of my favourites Metroidvania games ever, second only to Ori.
By the way, Surrogate Vulture is one of my favourite bosses of all time. The abilities, the flow, the music... perfection.
Man, I love how you mix your own narrative that complements the video and story being told by the game. Amazing work.
Yon can also be more or less ignored. If you never really talk to him after he gets his head... surgically removed, it doesn't advance his dread >:3
I love the storytelling in your videos, and how you kinda have your own lore built through previous challenge runs.
Forgot to mention this on the other vids but with my newest gifted status I'm on my way to watch every challenge run again. Didn't mention it on the previous videos because was watching on my TV. Welp here goes my delve into the insanity.
This game was so good and strange and sad. Shindra knows it can't beat you, not for good, but it'll fight to give everything a few more moments, it really makes me cry. Thanks for giving this game more attention, and for the cool challenge run!
I’ve been waiting for this, grime is a game I enjoy seeing you play and another challenge run, let’s go
I love Grime! Thank you for making great videos of it... hard to find much content of it on UA-cam unfortunately
I wonder where its lack of online presence comes from.
Hey lemon, if you read this: there is a way to skip the Yon fight. Go to the area above the Yon area and float down while hugging the right wall :)
Watching you proceed to not pull the bosses or enemies built around doing said pulling broke me
I've been really hoping to see you play this game some more, it's always a lot of fun to see challenge runs for some of those lesser known games, and this game seems like it has some decent potential
Yess, Grime! Thanks you Lemon, it is one of my favourite game of all times and I knew about if from your first video.
absolutely love grime and your content but i am wondering when the ds1 one shotting all bosses contest video is coming out
When it's ready...and after I've finally finished editing all 5tb of footage.
Absolutely phenomenal challenge run..!! Props on owning that misbegotten amygdala with just consumables 😃
That ending lemon, I need to sit and digest that lmao. Excellent video sir, keep up the good work!
That Khezu Roar at 9:42 cought me off guard, nice monster hunter reference :)
You got me to play this awesome game with your last video and now you're getting me to pick it up again. As if the first time didn't hurt my soul enough...
i have no words to describe how truely beautiful i find your videos. please keep making them as they are a ever inspiring light in the darkness
Love watching you play this game and you are the reason I’m going to get it to experience it for myself
I’ve been super hyped to see another Grime run from you since Tinge of Terror came out.
God Grime is such an awesome game... and one of the best soundtracks. So glad to see it getting more love here!
YAYYYY MORE GRIME CHALLENGE RUNS!!! I love these!
How have I never heard of this game before! It looks awesome!!! Another great video from The Backlogs...I will definitely be checking this game out, hopefully I didn't spoil it too much...
I loved so many on your runs and so does my son your the reason he has joined the dark souls community- he wouldn't stop using firebombs cause firebombs are life for him- but thanks for all your amazing content cNt wait for the next video
From a challenge run perspective I can see not using absorb, besides it being the last run you did, but you are literally consuming the enemies to use their power, so it should be fair game to get traits.
Jokes aside, Another amazing video Lemon!
Thank you s omuch for doing videos on this game as it's one of my favorite souls like games!
I got DS Remastered because of you and I loved 2 and 3. I beat the game with knowledge I gained from all toyr challenge runs and, didn't know beating Gwyn kicked me into NG+ instantly. So I beat the DLC on NG+
Great Video Lemon,
the ending gave me the shivers.
Thanks for everything you do!
You will always be THE Patience-Elemental.
im loving the tales of the firebomb universes, especially the call back to when papa bear destroyed the world of xcom in the name of the firebomb godess
Last thing I expected out of this video was that absolutely legendary Alphard quote
I Always love the narrative elements you put in these runs, always
Lemon, I really hope to be half the storyteller you are someday. You really take the stories of these games and make them feel so emotional, its very good.
lemon: yey! multiple boom in one bomb!
nioh1-nioh2: we have those too! (also only guns /which have explosive ammo/ is possible with the right build)
This takes me back to the older backlogs videos, I love it.
love the content man. quite possibly my favorite challenge runner. def watch everything u put out
This was the final straw.
I bought Grime and am now going to play it, thanks fr the great recommendation lemon.
btw woah at that Misbegotten Amalgam fight, in my playthrough I fought him right after the Feaster and it was one of the hardest bosses I've ever beat in any game, easily the hardest in GRIME. That being said, it was right at the launch, so maybe they nerfed him a little bit since then
Hi lemon you inspired me to do a challenge run in ffx 2. It took me 5 minutes until I realized it was futile and wanted to end all of existence so I appreciate your immolation run so much more now lol.
The day I can finally watch content again and you upload damn your time is flawless
Man I love the narrative you weave at the end
Bowdaggers were what I beat my first run with. They're amazing, and paired with the buffs that refill stamina and having high resonance , I parried and zoomed my way through it. The most impressive run I've seen though, was lantern only. It basically ran through bosses like you did with DS scythes
GRIME is such a beautiful and fascinating game, I'm glad I had a chance to buy and play it.
Yo grime! I loved this game, and bought it because of your video on it all that time ago, hell yeah!!!
There are a few creators where I am sure of the quality of the videos that I like before watching the video. Lemon ist most definatly one of them.
Yay! Grime 2 just got confirmed!!!. Seriously though can't wait. Oh also great video
Can’t wait for the one shot challenge video. Love ya Lemon!
Grime ist one of the games where I really would have liked to see lemon play his first playthrough just the normal way. looks so cool
"I'm the one who lites the fuse, I'm the one who keeps going," really caught me off guard
I have a suggestion if you ever encounter a similar situation where you need to force unlimited consumables: Rather than giving 999, or making them free to purchase, or having them restock... How about you have to collect/purchase them as normal, but if you hit an enemy, the game registers that damage and "refunds" the consumable? That way you're still in danger of running out if you only have 3 knives and you happen to miss with all of them -- But your consistency is rewarded and keeps the run alive.
even though i'm a bit sad that lemon rushed over the beauty called the surrogaten volture it was a fun video to watch, keep up the good work 👍
Recently i beat grime and i have to thank you for introducing me to this amazing game
Man, I struggled with the Giant of Eyes even with regular weapons. All the boss fights have been fun so far, and finding out which ones are new vs old is great, since I have only played since that update.
Babe, new Backlogs vid just dropped.
Lemon always waxing esoteric in his ever growing lore is priceless
Hi lemon, first off, awsome run, awsome narration, and awsome video as always.
Also, have you played hollow knight? if so, then i have a challenge for you: beating the game WITHOUT GETING SOUL.
that means, no spells, no healing, and no hiting enemies with your nail.
now, you do need to execute one singular glitch to make the run posible, however, i still think it would be fun to see you cry and suffer in deepnest.
Legends say that wherever a firebomb is seen, the Lemon will not be far behind. Propelled by his Goddess to show the world the true power of fire and flame
Certain enemies with grey health or a white glow can’t be absorbed, only repelled. Repelling doesn’t do damage. (This would’ve trivialized so much of this challenge) Also it’s great to see you play Grime again! (Also you called Nerveroot Nervepass and I don’t blame you.)
"Turns out firebombs aren't the answer to every single problem."
Lemon saying a problem can't be solved through firebombs? The hell kinda blasphemy is this?
The Urn of Volatile Eyes reminds me of the Gunner's Cluster Grenade from Deep Rock Galactic. "I call it my grenade grenade!"
Man, I forgot how good Grime was. Thanks for the video and reminder, I really enjoyed it.
I've been doing Blasphemous, and it just doesn't feel as good. It's like Grime succeeds in what Blasphemous tries to do in terms of story, atmosphere, and gameplay. There's more nuance to the religious fanaticism, more beauty and bittersweet moments found in the midst of horror, a more unique take on the subject matter, and a much smoother experience overall.
Lemon, I don't know if you've been told. But you are an incredible writer and story teller.
"turns out firebombs aren't the answer to every problem" BLASPHEMY UPON OUR FIREBOMB GODESS
oh, that "poison clouds" reminds me of a trick i found in an old game, Hexen.
when playing as the Priest character, you can use an item that makes poison clouds.
MOST enemies will take minor damage, BUT one enemy that's usually VERY frustrating, because of the way they block your attacks with a shield that can actually BOUNCE THEM BACK, is VERY easy to defeat with the poison clouds, because...
*he will try to block the clouds instead of moving out of them* !
the only downside is that it's quite NOISY, because they will go "OWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW-" for nearly a minute!
I absolutely love this game and im glad someone else is playing it lol
@13:36 glad I'm not the only one who makes those kinds of mistakes =p
I really need to play this game. It's not like it's in my library or anything.
I forgot about this game, but I think I want to get it
