    I have a xl1200 that came to me with a arlen ness air filter I was getting a rough idle, and lots of popping in decel. I upped the idle jet from 42 to 45 and drilled out the plug for the idle air mixture screw after watching your videos. The screw was only 1 turn out. I upped it to 2 and added screamin eagle slip ons as well. Runs great now, thanks a million Rocco!

      How does she idle? Air/fuel screw, how many turns out? Is it a crisp throttle response? Send a pitchure of your motorcycle so I could see the exhaust and intake. To Erocco3964@gmail.com. Start by cleaning air filter, and check oil level. Most time that will be a future. Let us know how that works out.

      sometimes with newer bikes you gotta reset your idle by turning your bike to run for 10seconds 4x to reset your idle but thats usually if your bike idles good then gets faster n faster, I would try the carb first before doing that tho

    I took your advice and replaced my Petcock because the bike was running very rough after 30 minutes of riding. It was idling very fast, then I watched this video and found one of the hose lines was cracking at the bottom of carb. I fixed that and now the 2006 sportster custom is running much better. You saved me a bunch of money and I was able to do it myself. I like learning stuff like this. Again Thank you very much I appreciate your time and advice. Love your video's.

    When I removed the plug, I found my screw already adjusted to the "sweet spot" that you recommend, 1 5/8 out. I left it there. I've had no black smoke and my spark plugs were light tan when I changed them with 10K miles on them. The only adjustment I needed to do was replace my stock #42 pilot jet with a #45 one to eliminate the cough on take-off, which I referred to in my comment on your video on replacing jets.

      Happy to help, remember it's a most important to have a clean air filter. If you run your hand under your air filter and there's oil on your fingertips there's a good chance you have too much oil in the motor. Check the oil dipstick, halfway full is where these motors run their best. Otherwise they will foul your plugs. Too much oil in the motor. This will result in a dirty air filter and a terrible riding bike. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and your sub drinkster. Ride safe and have a great day. Let us know how it works out.

      @@TwoWheelRocco Much appreciated! My '02 Dyna was very neglected by the previous owner so it's been an adventure of tuning her up. Definite signs of running too rich for too long. I adjusted the idling screw to bring it to 1k rpm with choke fully pushed in. Then I started the mixture. When I closed that mixture screw all the way off, it was almost 3 full turns. Backed it out to 1.5 and she idled so much smoother. To double check I had it good, I left her running and slowly started closing the mixture screw down until the engine did it's slow stutter then reversed it until full recovery. Was exactly 1/2 turn. Readjusted the idler screw after that. Added a little seafoam to the tank to help clean any junk out and took her for a spin. So much smoother! The more things I take care of on this bike, the better it feels. Ride safe and have a great day too!

    Rocco, bought an 05 Twin 88, stock carb, unknown 2 into 1 with baffle, high flow filter. Was set at 3 turns, plugs look pretty good, a bit sluggish at higher rpm, set at two turns, runs much better but plugs turning a bit to the grey side. But runs great! No backfire, nor did it at 3. Think I should go to 2.5 because of plug color? Couldn’t tell you how jetted. But if it runs good and plugs look good, should I just leave it?
    One more question. The mixture screw affects the mixture throughout the complete range of throttle, not just idle, doesn’t it? And thank you?

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  3 роки тому

      Helps with transition from idle to mid range. but it all adds up in the end. I would leave it at two turns. That tells me the Jets are right size. Hope this helps thank you for your sub Yoso.. Ride safe and have a great day.

    Great videos! I have a question, my 05 883 has stock pipes, stock AC & stock jets. The bike had no power, carb was coughing real bad... I shimmed the needle with one thin washer and drilled the slide with 7/64” bit. Bike has a lot more power and runs great, but when I randomly give the throttle a quick blip it falls flat and about stalls out. If I rev it a little slower it’s fine... I’m just trying to get it right. I read that I need to up the pilot from 42 to 45. Let me know your thoughts I’d appreciate it

    Hey Rocco, always happy to see another video from you.
    I took out the baffles on my slip-ons and upgraded to what I was told is a stage 2 equivalent air cleaner on my 97 xl1200, lots of popping on decel and the occasional backfire when taking off or starting it. I bought a couple new jets but all my buddies think I should only have to adjust the screw mixture, what are your thoughts on the matter?

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  4 роки тому

      What jets are in there? So now you have no baffle at all you will likely go to a 45 idle jet. 180 main and about 2 turns out on air/gas screw. 3 washer under your needle in your slide. And you will loose the backfiring and popping on decal. That is where I would start. But I am not a big fan of running no baffles. Buy a after market slip on on Ebay $140 you will have a better ride with minimal tuning. A/F 1 3/4 out and done. Let us know how this works out. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.

    Thanks for the great video Rocco. What does the bike do if it's out of adjustment? I know you mentioned throttle response and black smoke. Are there any other signs? Currently my bike starts up and idles fine. Throttle response when riding seems good. I do have that gas smell similar to lawn mowers that are running rich, but it sounds good. Also, when adjusting, do you always begin with the clockwise 2 turn adjustment followed by the counterclockwise turn to complete the adjustment? Thanks again!!

      I turn it in just so I know How many turns in. And that my starting point from fully closed A/G screw. Every time I adjust so there is know confusion. If your bike pops on deceleration, that's air..So a little more gas will clear that up. I like to know how many turns out I started with. Let us know how it works out. Hey Roco I just put a new carburetor on my bike and it has a 185 jet. The factory recommendation for my bike is a 170. When I'm riding the bike and giving it full throttle it kind of hesitates. I'm wondering if this jet is causing the hesitation or perhaps the air-fuel mixture. So I guess my question is where would I start out at for tuning in terms of how many rotations?

    My 03 883 has 2k miles on it. I replaced all fluids, put on a kn filter and took out the baffles. Now it’s sluggish to accelerate except when full throttle and sounds different and pops a lot especially on down shifting and deceleration. Good place to start? Screw adjust or bigger jets?

      You will have to work the Jets. and A/F. When you remove that baffle on the stock pipe you have no back pressure. Rocco, I just successfully cleaned the carb and fired up a moth balled 1999 883 , after draining the oil tank which only had 3 cups I changed the filter and added 2 quarts. after running it for five minutes I checked the oil tank which was now full and over flowing. could there have been oil lingering in the crank case?

    • @TwoWheelRocco
      @TwoWheelRocco  4 роки тому

      Yes, it's a dry sump motor and sitting for a period of time oil works its way into the motor and then you see it's low an add a quart and when you start the bike up the oil recycles to the oil tank and you end up at way too much oil. Clean air filter and remove oil. I like to see half way on your oil stick. Happy to hear you got her running. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.

    Hey Rocco ... How many turns out for a 1997 stock carb Harley Dyna with a custom exhaust and a Big Sucker air cleaner? I noticed the rear spark plug was sooty but the front plug looked good. But the bike ran fine with no black smoke. I cleaned the plugs and started playing with the air fuel mixture screw. I started at 3 turns out and am now at 1 3/4 turns out, hoping the carbon won't reappear on the rear plug. How do I know where the "sweet spot" is? The bike had a great response at 3, 2.5, 2.0 and 1.75 turns out. do I keep leaning it out until the bike doesn't idle smoothly? Throttle response is good. On occasion, when decelerating I would hear the carb "spit" but not loud and only once. Should I bring the screw out until there is no spitting at all when decelerating?

      I don't really understand rev limiter, there is no rev limiter on a 04 XL1200 sportster. . That's a carbureted bike. Sounds like your jet is too big on your main and that's why it's sputtering out if it was not big enough, it would just lean out and rev with No Power. If it's sputters, it's too much fuel. Hi, I have both a Intruder VS1400 and Marauder vz800,,,I have the bikes running well and synced and carbs inspected and set to spec,,,However the idle on both of these bikes is a bit off,,,AND upon bliping or reving the throttle on both bikes the idle hangs for a sec before returning to steady idle,,,from my under standing when this happens its typically a lean condition, conversely when you blip a throttle and it dips, then returns to idle its a rich condition,,,,,,,IS this issue solved by simply finding the correct mixture screw seting on both carbs? IF not do you have any other ideas for me to try? TY you have a great channel

When i took the carb off the mix screw was backed out like 4 turns so i re set it to 1 and 3/4 and my throttle responce picked up significantly, but i still have a weird backfire at around 3500 rpm. The backfire was why i thought the mix was off. It also pops a bit on decel. I never noticed any smoke from the bike last season. I rode it all summer and just ignored the backfire. The bike is now triked out and I am going to put the vance and hines 2 into 2 short shots on the bike. It runs great now with the 2 into 1 system.
