The Gentle Giant, bought back happy memories as a 'passed cleaner' working at Newton Abbot firing on the summer excursions to the seaside, happy days thanks for sharing. t ..
There's so much to see in the footplate footage. The Dean/Churchward backhead arrangement has never been bettered, and in many designs (e.g. BR Standards) made much harder for the crew, with left hand drive, and horrible regulator/screw reverser. Dean and Churchward actually thought seriously about the ergonomics - 120 years ago! See how easy it is for a right-handed driver to operate the screw reverser without back strain, while at the same time working the brake. And the lovely long regulator handle with its balance weight. Note easy pumping action when getting the loco moving. Also, the right handed fireman finds it much easier firing from the left of the cab, and doesn't get in the driver's way. I love the firing sequence, two back left, two back right, more down the hill, looking under the shovel to inspect the fire, each blast pulling up the fire, the flap going up, the billy can above the firedoor. Just really brilliant. Thank you!
On the GN and LNER we all shovelled from the rh side as the Driver was on the LH side of the engine, where the signals were. The GN was also the Premier railway and was the fastest to the North. These guy's are only playing trains. I bet the Drver here does not know why he has a shiny top to his cap! I do.
Nice footplating and awesome locomotive. Is there any rule of showing alright signals or any flags. Means no flag alrights from Guard. I want to know how train starts and stops on specific rule.
As I always say: God bless all those who saved these machines from the cutter's torch, and those who keep them running
Love it. Music to my ears.😂
What's not to like , being on the footplate of a King . Thank you for posting !
HOT HOT HOT place in the summer time. Fortunately this one is very open.

Great Video! It's nice to experience the feel of firing/driving a GWR Classic whether it be on UA-cam or Reality. Thanks for sharing!
All in your County of Glorious Devon too.

The Driver and Fireman agree with you.

driving a steam loco in a white shirt! brave! also did anyone else notice at 6.04 ish the King blows out a perfect smoke ring!
That's good trainspotting
Perfect distance between blast pipe and top of chimney
Thanks for sharing your visit there Derek.
My Annual treat.
I like the quality of the video footage as well. Which camera are you using? Thks.
Awesome video!
Thanks. A trip on the DSR.......my annual treat.

Signals are the responsibility of the Driver. The "Right Away" from stations is given by the Guard.
Wonder what the valve setting is at 7.17 when the driver fully opened the regulator without slipping from starting off?
Skilful stuff.
That is certainly true.
I did one like that and just stood there. Though was cheeky and asked if could put some coal on and the fireman let me :)
Why wasn’t the fire box filled to the brim in true GWR spirits?
It may because on a line like this with only 6 or 7 coaches using a loco designed to pull 15-20 coaches on gradients you won't need a big fire
🇮🇳💐💐⚘❤🌺 i love beautiful steam locomotive ⚘💐💐🇮🇳
Lovely filming. Is the guy whos experience it is the one in the white shirt?
That's the Driver.
Right OK then. Does the chap get to drive on his experience or not?
This footplate experience on the Dartmouth Steam Railway is "don't touch". It is priced accordingly, very good value and brilliant.
Trains, Boats, Planes For most people that’s what they want just the ride. It’s a pity more heritage lines don’t do the same.
My deer father is a good steam train driver.yah!
Linda locomotiva

Ummm... I think they put the engine on backwards! Reverse all the way!)
