  • Meet the World's Best Helicopter Display Team, the Indian Air Force Sarang Helicopter Display Team is one of the very few Helicopter Air Display team in the world. The video is dedicated to all the men and women behind these beautiful birds.
Sarang, is the Sanskrit name for ‘Peacock’, the National bird of India. The synchronised aerial ballet of four brightly painted metal birds draws comparisons with the graceful dance of a Peacock. But for the rotors, we would have been closer’, the team states it proudly! As the rotors churn and the beautifully coloured Advanced Light Helicopters take-off to paint the skies, the team ensures plenty of breathtaking moments for the viewers. Low and slow, yet crisp and agile, this Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) manufactured indigenous helicopter and the team have been drawing attention internationally as well as at home.
While it is natural to expect daring manoeuvres and precise formation by fixed wing aircraft, it is notably difficult to do the same in helicopters owing to the unstable nature of rotary wing. Thus one would find only a handful of helicopter display teams across the globe. Display flying involves walking the thin line between bravery and foolhardiness. While manoeuvring in close proximity to three other rotors, there is no room for error. Moreover to demand the very best out of this beautiful machine and coax her to give that extra bit in display flying, the Team needs the best of its pilots. Therefore only those pilots, who are selected after a rigorous selection process, make the cut from a large number of volunteers. The skills and temperament required for display flying is acquired and honed through rigorous training. Confidence in one’s own flying ability, faith in team members, and absolute trustworthy machine are essential.
The team is lead by Gp. Capt. Santosh Kumar Mishra, a qualified flying instructor and an Instrument rating instructor and examiner. He has been one of the pioneers seeing through the fledging Sarang team to today’s one of its kind in the world. Wg Cdr Sridhar a badminton enthusiast, is the Deputy leader of the team.
Wg. Cdr. Niket, captain on Sarang 4 is the josh box of unit and batting his second tenure. Wg. Cdr. Veer and Wg. Cd.r Patnaik are cleared captains of Sarang 3. Sqn Ldr Akash is the youngest member of the team. Wg. Cdr. Gopi Krishna, Wg. Cdr. TVR Singh, Wg. Cdr. Gokula Krishnan, Sqn. Ldr. Sanga, Sqn. Ldr. Avinash, Sqn Ldr Karan, Sqn. Ldr. Dumre, Sqn. Ldr. Gokul, Sqn. Ldr. Akshay, Sqn. Ldr. Dhanveer and Sqn. Ldr. Sachin are other pilots of the team.
