  • Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily could erupt at any time. It's a constant threat to many people living at the foot of the volcano - but also a source of livelihood. The fertile lava soil makes for rich harvests and exquisite wines. Euromaxx reporter Hendrik Welling sets off on a journey to Europe's highest active volcano for "Europe to the Maxx".

I do live at the foot of Etna, and every morning, when I go to school, I see that it is always different and always amazing to photograph: very lucky to be here.

You are indeed fortunate to live there Riccardo. So much of life comes down to luck, and it's good to recognize that truth. It will make you a better person to always remember it.

@@sidemensClips no don't worry.. There's a lot of distance from the volcano to the city so there's no risks

I am currently studying in Italy and wish to see this fascinating god up close. I love the mythology of this too.

I live at the foot of the vulcano. I can promise you i've never felt threatened by its presence. It's the gentle giant, mother of this land that gave us our soil that have sustained our economy for centuries and offered us the spectacle of its majesty. Is it annoying to clean up the ash every time after an eruption? Yes, is it scary to see a lava flow ending up on the wrong side or opening a new cone on its flanks? Yes but it's also something you have to live with, nay, you Get to live with.

Great video. Tell me, we saw children there walking up to the summit, is that right, that even children can walk there? I'd heard it was a 1.5hr ascent and 2hr descent and that you needed to be pretty equipped against cold and with walking poles. Did you go all the way to where it's possible to walk, and in that last clip of the film was that on a part that needed a guide?

Paying a visit to the Etna with the proper respect due to the forces of Nature is on my to do list, but I wouldn't want to live there.
