I love the band, Calexico. A co-worker introduced me to them. We live in Chicago. I spent a lot of time at the Tucson VA, before my Father's death. I visited the Hotel Congress. Sorry to have missed the live performance of such an awesome band. Dad, WWII, was my main concern at this time. Calexico is a very fine band, one of my very favorites. I love the clip of the old airplanes. I drove by there daily to find dad a decent pair of shorts that he could wear. :-)
I have been hearing this song on an AM radio station in Montreal quite a bit the past few weeks, it immediately grabbed my attention. The first time I ever heard them was a few years ago when their cover of Alone Again Or came out, that song was really pretty, but this....it's captivating.
This gives a real feel to Tucson which I miss deeply where I am from but now live in Europe. When I left in the 80's I scorned Tucson because I thought we had no good bands or culture but each time I'm reminded that we have things that no other towns have like 4 mountains that surround us & a creepy downtown.I bumped into Joey & John in London recently & filmed their two shows at Rough Trade & The Forum where as usual they excelled. They deserve their success because they ARE the sound of Tucson.
yes yes yes, i totally agree! when i listend to the record for the first time this song kept ringing in my ear. i can`t count how many i have been listening to it the last couple of weeks, must be about a hunderd already, as i spent even one single evening walking around my neighbourhood at night listening to it for like 25 times of so... b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l. song!!
I never heard of these guys until today. I like their "trance" style. There's a certain haunting mellowness in this song. Why don't we hear of innovative groups earlier? Why are all the outlets so controlled, so as to only allow certain select groups public exposure? I'll give these guys 5 Stars.
im a love fan and discovered calexico thru their cover of alone again or!! and they are as mighty a band as love! high praise! but deserved! this song is gorgous!!!!
Well, when I went to visit my Dad at the VA hospital there in Tuscan, I DID stop in there at the Hotel Congress. They DID have that neat jukebox. I saw it. But, I didn't go later at night because Dad always seemed to be scheduled for an early morning appointment. I DID see the airplane graveyard though. It was AMAZING !!!!! Wow.
@MrsNemonina Well said. Although it's not next record that I'm waiting for. I want their next DVD with high quality sound. Everything they do live is so much better than studio(I'm not saying they aren't good in studio). I had a DVD : Live From Barbican london but I broke the disc and I can't find song "Wash" from that concert anywhere on net. That's great version. And I need it badly.
It's great that this was filmed entirely in Tucson. You've got the Hotel Congress Taproom, Wig-o-Rama, Menlo Park Video on W Congress, the El Tradito shrine and "The Boneyard" out at the air force base.
Two Silver Trees is a metaphor for the two Twin Towers during 9/11… the imagery and way that this band created this song even down to that haunting feeling everyone gets just perfectly fits the subject. 12 years and counting, I’ll always love this song. It’s ironic a song about 9/11 is one that I listen to that reminds me of music and nostalgia of my teenage years. ❤️
I read that this song was inspired also by the fantastic American poet Norman Dubie (whom I only today learned sadly passed away a little less than a year ago). Now having heard about the 9/11 metaphor only adds further layers of resonance. Thanks for sharing it.
Oh that's so sad to hear. And honestly every time I hear the beginning of this song I get goosebumps for many reasons. If you watch the first couple seconds it shows a plane flying and then a building. Such a gorgeous haunting nostalgic song. I'm so glad we can share this stuff with each other and others who enjoy it.
i heard this song for the first time yesterday on the television galaxy station "ambient" - they remind me of old fleetwood mac and a bit of chris isaac. if/when they come to canada i will want to see them
Check it out. Behind those planes is my backyard! Hahaha. Calexico rules. Hey quick question. Any one know what kind of guitar Joey is playing? I'd buy that guitar in a heartbeat. Thanks!
I agree with jimnaughton1, you've got something special with this song. The chorus is so powerful...I don't know what else to say besides it speaks to my soul, and it is augmented by the sparse and mysterious verses. I heard this on 89.3 The Current, and while that's great, I hope you've got some smart people promoting you, because you've really got something that needs to be shared with more people.
Probably the most original band that came up in last 20 years except maybe for Tool, SlipKnot and Tortoise. They really brushed their style to perfection. I remember the Spoke album. And the song Wash. Since then they only got better unlike some bands. I can't believe that someone can dislike this. Dislike button should be disabled for this video.
Is there such a thing? What an interesting way to classify music. i can imagine this being time disposing rather than mindbuilding if listened while commuting. This is to be savored in a moment of emotional settlement. But if that's what transportation does to you, then go for it. :)
saw them Friday @ Mesa Amp.....this was the third song I think. It was amazing. More electric than this version and perhaps a bit faster. Just churning and roiling. Jacob played the main melody on vibes. it was amazing. god i love these guys.
0:32 : east side of Meyer just north of 17th, looking north. 0:42 : northwest corner of Convent and 18th, looking southwest. 0:45 : west side of Meyer just south of the convention center, traveling north. 1:28 : southeast corner of W Congress/Grande
These guys are awesome musicians and super genuine people, have had the pleasure of meeting them a few times.

Calexico is great as always! Saw them live last night and it was amazing. They played for over two hours and it never got boring.

They are also playing in the tap room at Club Congress! Its been awhile since ive been there but it still has the same jukebox!

LOVE THIS SONG! BTW :) I met these guys on a Dutch festival where my band played with them and discussed music afterwards :)
Musical regards, AlascA
The bass line of this stays with me and the hushed vocals are like a mysterious dream.

I love this group. Maybe you should start with one of the earlier recordings because the mariachis are not to be missed. What talent!

Hey, Cowboy - try to make the trip with a short stop in Germany so I can jump on that plane as well. I want to visit Arizona once either! :)
Check it out. Behind those planes is my backyard! Hahaha. Calexico rules.
Hey quick question. Any one know what kind of guitar Joey is playing? I'd buy that guitar in a heartbeat. Thanks!
saw them live with Arcade Fire last month. They were great!!!!
This played on the Finnish Subtv Movie complication ad on christmast so this is legendary for me.

Tucson
The airplanes are at the AMARG Boneyard and most of the other scenes are in downtown.
una gran banda, como tambien sus canciones, que todas ellas tienen esos tintes fronterizos que marca el estado de arizona y mexico...
This man has talent.
ghost tune ... I didn't know there were silver trees before hearing this ... now I see them everywhere ...
Great band I wanna see them in Poland someday
love this band, can't believe they are not more popular, then again maybe not =)

Woah is it me or is the best part of the intro missing?
Tucson is my home, and you described it correctly.
This Song is simply cool.
do you think "two silver trees" is a homage to "silver trees" by rocky votolato? :D
