Hey all, one minor correction from the vid. Dr. Wilson apologizes for misspeaking at 2:13 - Adventists believe the millennium will take place in heaven, not on earth. I should have caught that for him. He got it right in his book, which I heartily recommend: iupress.org/9780253014474/dr-john-harvey-kellogg-and-the-religion-of-biologic-living/
good call adam!
Thanks for posting the correction, Adam, and to the eagle-eyed commenter who caught it.
😂😂😂🤣
This is absolutely not what I expected, It was less curbing sex drive and more of eating fried wheat flakes to go to heaven
As an Adventist, thanks for catching that.
So this is why my Korean Pastor dad made me eat so many corn flakes while reading me Revelations. Interesting

I love how Adam is leaning against the wall while talking. It is a position so informal and confortable that it seems that he is just talking some interesting facts about cereal with me in a party or something.

Adam, stop talking about cereal, I'm hungry, when's dinner?
Internal monologue: when should I tell him I usually skip breakfast?

Hey Adam! I especially enjoyed this video as a Battle Creek native. My great grandmother, Bernice Lowe, wrote "Tales of Battle Creek" which was a big reason we know all the history of Battle Creek, MI. They used to call her the "Attic Archeologist". With Battle Creek history so ingrained in my family history, it was very refreshing to see this covered so well and exhaustively. I have no complaints. Let me know if you have any more questions about Battle Creek! My grandmother loves talking about her mother and the history she found.
That's pretty cool; it's like you're a part of cereal history.

If I didn't know Adam's content, I probably wouldn't have watched, judging just by the title. A little click-baity and a theme that's been on too many online posts before. But being Adam, of course it was worth the while! Well fact checked and informative beyond mere curiosity.
I was honestly ready to click off if it was all stuff I'd heard before, but Adam's stuff really is so well produced.
Ok
Can confirm that it works: Every morning as a teenager, I’d wake up with extremely stiff morning wood... but as soon as I’d start eating
a bowl of cereal, the stiffness would disappear. Now THAT’s what I call science!
Off topic but Adam never change your background because it makes me feel so relatable to you. Having the fridge full of kids drawings and a laymans kitchen makes it that much authentic. One day you will become rich and have a bigger house and bigger kitchen maybe even with a studio to talk to from. But this will be missed greatly.

Had no clue about the vegetarianism aspect of Adventism. Always great journalism from your videos
It's wild to me that people can know about SDA and not know about the diet stuff. I grew up with Thanksgiving being all vegan except for the literal turkey because we'd always meet up at my SDA Aunt and Grandmother's place
@@lerualnaej5917 The vegetarianism is encouraged in the SDA church but is not one of the 28 Fundamentals - the core beliefs. I know the SDA life myself as I still, to this day, identify with the denomination.
Fun fact: circumcision was popularised in the US for the exact same reason

He was also the chief proponent for circumcision, and it's his influence that helped propel circumcision to being so ubiquitous in the US. I'd argue this is one of the single most damaging aspects of his influence on modern medicine.
100%, there is a reason why many, MANY people despise him for his actions. He single handedly made male genital mutilation a common thing in the US.

As a Seventh-day Adventist it's weird hearing past tense or a lot of description of some things that are normal for me because it's unusual for most other modern Christians when referring to us as a group (and no, we're not into eugenics if anyone's curious, and while some of the views Kellogg held are based on our principles, his views are not representative of us in general, especially nowadays), also while we do believe Adam and Eve were vegetarian, that's just a minor reason for why they lived so long, it's more to do with literally being "built different" from us nowadays because of the effects of sin
Eugenics is like the best part though

I'm still peeved about being circumcised largely thanks to this guy
@@tynj4173 It's not that it causes "problems", unless it gets botched which does happen, but it's mutilating part of a baby's genitals before they even have fucking object permanence, let alone be able to object to it, and reduces penile sensitivity and sexual pleasure. There aren't even any tangible health benefits (allegedly it helps prevent the spread of HIV but that isn't the consensus opinion of scientists. there's also smegma but that's nothing some basic hygiene can't handle. sometimes the foreskin is too tight and circumcision is medically necessary but that's not the case for most people). It is a completely barbaric practice that was pushed on Americans because some jesus freak didn't want little timmy jacking off.
@@tynj4173 people like to complain over nothing, the foreskin is largely rudimentary in males and serves no purpose in today's world unless you're going out naked in the jungle and you need something to offer some form of external protections... it became irrelevant the moment we invented underwear.

The Adventist church here in Australia also played a leading commercial role in breakfast cereals and actually still does; the company that owns weet bix and some other iconic Aussie foods (also So Good, our okayish national soymilk producer) is owned by the church. And because they're owned by the church they don't have to pay taxes lol
Though on the other hand I suspect Sanitarium donates a substantial amount of money, probably to ADRA, because of close church relation, but still charity (yes, ADRA is the Adventist relief arm).
Do you remember the "Nine out of ten nutritionists recommend kids eat Weet-Bix" commercial of the 90s? I remember an update video that had several of the Sanitarium staff doing a parody of it. The real joke (which honestly my 20-yr-old butt needed to have explained) was the guy who did the "What is a budget?" bit was the company's head of finance.
