Metropolitan areas attract tens of thousands of new, young residents. Across vast plains and through mountain enclaves, the population grows smaller and older. Demographic shifts like these underscore the many cultural, economic and political disparities between the state's urban and rural communities -- a chasm that defines the Colorado Divide.
