Usually it is recommended if you fall out of a raft to float feet downstream. It's better to push off rocks with your feet than upper body or head.
I floated feet first when I washed out of the raft and floated a class V on the Zambezi which has large crocodiles. They generally eat things in the river smaller than them. The crocodiles range in length from about 11-20 feet. It is all about managing panic. Another one was being in an open jeep about 8 feet from a leopard that was hunting. Then there were rebel gunshots nearby visiting the mountain gorillas in Virunga NP. But the most interesting was a roadblock by child soldiers during the civil war in Sierra Leone. It wasn't as scary as the rapids because I didn't know at that time what they were capable of. Touristing in Kabul felt somewhat safe.

My scariest story is being stranded without a phone and WiFi in the middle of France at 2AM after our bus dropped us off at the train station. I don’t know French and everyone had gotten off by then. And I know my Airbnb was about a mile away... thankfully two girls gave me a ride to my Airbnb, and I got on my flight later on at 9AM!

I've never been really scared but I kinda felt unsafe when I was in Egypt. We were on camels during more than 2 hours between the mountains and the red sea and the camels were walking on wet rocks near the sea. They did that everyday so they were used to it, I guess.. but at sometimes they slipped a little and I really thought I was going to fall in the rocks and then in the sea, which was really agitated.. But nothing bad happened and it's a great memory now.. the landscapes were amazing

I give you a lot of credit for attempting that as there would be no way I would be in that river, lol! One travel moment where I felt very nervous happened last year when I was in Vienna. I was walking from the Danube Tower (I highly recommend checking it out at sunset for amazing views of Vienna) to the U-Bahn station after dark, and it was extremely dark out as the park had no lights on at all except for buildings off in the distance. I could barely see, and it was very quiet. I felt much better once I got out of the park, but it was really tense!

Scariest thing for me was outside YuYuan Garden in old town Shanghai a few years ago. It was lantern festival time, and I had the “not-so-bright” idea of heading there to get into the Garden to see all the lovely lanterns at night. Trouble was, about 100,000 other people had the same idea. You need a ticket to get in, and I didn’t have one. The ticket line was not feasible with thousands waiting. For some reason, I walked though a “sardine can” crush of people for a solid city block to get to the entrance (thinking I could find extra tickets there). It was like walking through several Shanghai subway cars during rush hour. Not advisable! I got to the entrance, there was a railing separating me from it, no way to get tickets and no way to get away from railing while other people kept walking in my direction toward the railing. I was pinned up against it, with a mass of humanity behind me and no way to move forward. I thought I would be trampled or die in that crowd, at that moment. It’s the only time I’ve ever been scared in China in over ten trips there spanning ten months time spent there the past decade. My wife was luckily with me, and she spotted a very narrow path to the side that we slithered through to get away from the railing, and then we walked back through the sardine can and after a block or two, we were back at the subway entrance. Whew! Stay away from popular mass humanity events in China, especially if you don’t preplan with tickets or knowing a way out!

I went zip lining in Roatan during a torrential rain storm. Our guide grabbed a huge banana leaf, he used as an umbrella and said this will keep you dry. The rain was pounding against my face at times but there were moments of absolute exhilaration of watching the lush tropical scenery, mixed with the warmth of the air, that I never really felt scared or thought WTF!! But... I will never do that again... A scary moment, at times? A Stupid moment, "most definitely."

Horse back riding near the Grand Tetons, it didn't look like this company took care of their horses and as a result the horses didn't listen well. When I expressed my concern I was silenced and told it would get better, it didn't. At the end my horse got spooked and bolted with me on the back. No one asked if I was OK and I walked away from the experience crying and shaking.

I did a whitewater rafting trip once. There was this chute/slide they let let everyone go down without the raft one by one. At the end of the slide, you got dumped into the river and went underwater for a few seconds and I wasn’t able to breath either and totally thought I was going to drown. Hated it.

I was once rubbing down a river and me and my friends decided to try and get out at an early dock, my friends made it out I didn’t, my raft deflated and the current was taking me incredibly fast down the river in a very deep dark section surrounded by dark creepy caves, alone. Needless to say I had a panic attack and tried my best to swim back to them with no luck. After a few minutes (but what felt like an eternity) my friends were able to come after me but it was terrifying and reminds me of what you did so that’s a big no from me.

The scariest thing that ever happened to me was crossing the border from Nicaragua to Costa Rica in 1990. When I came out of the Nicaraguan checkpoint, I found out that the Costa Rican checkpoint was 3 kilometers away and they wanted $2 for the shuttle bus. Not willing to pay this outrageous amount, I shouldered my pack and started walking. The road was a narrow asphalt one-lane road through the jungle. Halfway through, I heard rustling in the bushes to my left and a small troop of heavily armed guerilla soldiers (5 or 6 of them) came running out of the jungle and surrounded me so tightly that I couldn't move. Their leader was right in my face screaming at me in Spanish, asking me questions that indicated they thought I was a spy. My brain went into hyperspeed and I decided that they must be Uno troops (if they were Sandinista, I may have been dead) so I pretended to not understand what he was saying and finally admitted that I was an American. The mood changed immediately and they started slapping me on the back and calling me "El Loco Gringo." As soon as they moved out of my way, I started walking again, relieved to be alive. Three weeks later, I was coming back the other way and happily paid my $2 for the shuttle bus.

Scariest for me was paragliding in Budva. I had paraglide before and this one didn't seem safe. A few weeks after my jump, a tourist was killed doing the same jump along with her guide. I've done 5 trips to New Zealand and have done some fun adventure activities. No riverboarding though. I will say the scariest thing I ever did was in Zambia at Victoria Falls. We went to Devil's Pool. This is at the edge of the fall and the guides there are fearless, standing at the edge of the 350 foot falls. I gave them my camera to photograph our experience and they were standing right on the edge, I feared for their safety. But then our guide wanted me to lay down flat on my belly and look over the falls while he held onto my legs. I had put on some sunless tanner and my legs were slippery. I don't think he was prepared for how slippery they were and neither was I! My husband was there and just told him there was no WAY he was going to look over the falls! Ya, thank you - not again. I loved Africa, loved our experiences at Victoria Falls. But no, to leaning over them!

So the most eye-opening and kind of scary thing I’ve ever done while traveling was going to the Golan Heights in Israel. Me and my friends went to the border of Syria and Israel called the bental lookout in August 2016 when the huge conflict was happening. And when we were there there is a Syrian city near the border and we could hear bombs go off and gun fire. It made me and I don’t know I think about it a lot though it changed me as a person

Hi Nadine, I had a similar situation happen to me in Pucon, Chile. It was rafting class 4. The river was very swollen and the other people I;the raft has never been rafting except me and rage guide. I had dome plenty of rafting in Nz.... anyway.... disaster struck people didn’t
Listen and paddle hard the raft flipped in let say it was pretty much class 5. I was held under for a very long time “so I get washing machine” when I was able to come to surface I was eventually grabbed and pulled into the raft there was only the guide and one other person.... everyone else was scattered over the river bed. Terrible experience the guide told me he was surprised I was alive. Scariest thing ever and I do lots of adventure hiking stuff .... I promised myself never to do rafting again. And I haven’t it was a very lucky escape.... and they company I went with is no longer

  • @don-dspid2404

My scariest experience was actually quite similar, but it was on a canoeing trip down a river that had some class 4 rapids. I was big into white water canoeing and was pretty good at it. But this river had such hard turns and hydraulics that threw us straight into huge boulders and down into grooves under said boulders (like your washing machine). The problem was there was no way to get off the river until you went through a substantial part of the rapids. Not a good time. I didn't go canoeing for several months after that. Just in over my head on that one. I am more into sea kayaking now. Seems in your case that having that many boards so close together would have made it more dangerous.

So not the scariest thing I've done BY CHOICE but my bf and I were in Beijing, China and we had to catch a train to Shanghai at around 11 am so we decided to go to the temple of heaven before catching our train. We exit out the back of the temple and we just couldn't hail a cab. so this guy driving a tuk tuk pulls up and offers us a ride. well, we had me, my bf, 2 backpacks, a duffle bag, a suitcase, and 2 camera bags and the mo-ped was struggling. first of all, he was driving down the opposite direction on the highway so he pulls off and down an alley and I'm thinking "this is where we get murdered" lol he just changes the battery and were off again. whew. we get about a block away from the train station and another tuk tuk driver yells something in Chinese, our driver immediately stops and kicks us out. I was holding $40 CYN (not even knowing if that's how much it was) he takes it without a word and leaves us on the side of the road...needless to say, i was scared out of my mind at the time but now i can laugh about it

situation where i genuinely felt scared for my life....uhh probably the first time i went to Vietnam during the bus journey back from Halong Bay. Our driver decided to get into an argument with another truck driver over him pushing into line waiting at the toll booth which then proceeded to get out of control where our minibus was attacked with a huge pole, smashed and then proceeded to speed down the highway where we were being chased by the other truck and all his friends he had called, thought we were going to be run off the road or maybe shot....yeah that was scary lol lucky the second time to Vietnam went way more smoothly :)

@@heynadine for sure, i couldn't believe what was happening at the time, i was a crying mess with anxiety and had crouched on the floor because i thought they were going to ram the back of our bus and i was sitting at the back. a few of the aussies on the bus were yelling at the driver to let us off but wouldn't listen so he then proceeded to go off the main highway and go down back streets to shrug them off. our poor young guide was pleading with the driver to stop but he wouldn't even listen to him...some of the people on the bus were dropped off earlier as demanded and i saw the police didn't even care. ya...pretty crazy and i still wonder like wth went on, was that just a bad nightmare. we had switched buses from the original bus that we got to Halong Bay on because of over crowding....we got on the wrong minibus for sure! lol but hey a story i'll always remember!

Lol...you are fearless!! Not sure this should even be a "thing". Whose bright idea was it that the only thing standing between humanity and certain death was a plastic board and helmet? You Go Girl...my hat is off to you...but for me.... No thank you!!!

I thought the scariest thing you did was that night in the Amazon. My scariest is still sky diving. Or any view with heights.
