Ancient also. Because there's no modern record or account of his existence besides what the Quran says. People say he was Cyprus the great or Alexander. Both of which are just assumptions by people.
Where was he born and where is his maqam? In surah kahf didn't mention alot of details about him.

It was the Jews in Medina who told the pagan Arabs to go and ask the Prophet the question about the great traveler, because they thought it would be impossible for an Arab Prophet to know about an individual mentioned in their scripture . In answer to this question, the verses were revealed, "They aske you about DHUL QARNAYN......." Who is They here ? The Jews. One need to ask the Jews, who they considered DHUL QARNAYN i.e. two horn one. Tanakh is explicit who that person is. Go, get some education.
