- This is my favourtie royal movie, and this is one of the great scenes from it. King George VI "bertie" is (in my opinton) one of our best Kings. This scene is set in the middle of WW2. And the famous bombing on buckingham palace.
@nrjones2001 You are correct. During the blitz, after a particularly bad night, one of the most reassuring things for Londoners was waking up the next morning and seeing the Royal Standard flying from Buckingham Palace. It meant that the King and Queen were in residence and sharing the hardships of their people. They were advised to send their daughters to safety, but the Queen said they could not go without her, that she would not go without the King, and the King would never leave. Wow.
Thats simply not true. The King and Queen lived in B.P. It was Princess Elizabeth and Margaret who where sent to Windsor. The King and Queen visited them on the Weekends, but spent most nights at Buckingham Palace, unless work took them elsewhere
George VI is probably my favorite British monarch (God Save the Queen, bless her) and this scene shows why; he's so devoted and so steadfast it almost makes you cry.
Wait, so that woman is the queen mother?
George VI and HRH Elizabeth are my kind of heros! Wonderful people that contributed so much to freedom.
Ruddy Hun coming over the Mall, how very dare they, lol!
@mc0558 The Duke of Gloucester played a very important role. If anything had happened to King George VI during the war, Prince Henry would have become regent until Princess Elizabeth came of age.
mindspring57 From what I understand, the Duke of Gloucester was to stay in the UK until Elizabeth turned 18 for exactly that reason. He, as the next adult in the line of succession, would have been Regent for Elizabeth until then.
So, it happened in the morning. I thought the Germans used to bomb London only at night. No air-raid sirens? That's odd...
Can I tell something about the English all the were foreigners one foreigner the HM secretary did not knew about the Duke of Saxa Corburg Gotha boy name who bombed the Buckingham Palace Wallis Simpson who affair with HM Edward she was talking to Sir Samuel Hore the British foreign Secretary poor Wallis Simpson she did not knew Hitler the Fuhrer of Nazi Germany at the time same period can you please these foreigners to talk properly
Saxe Coburg **** And what the Hell is this "Boy Name"!?
@nrjones Yes, you are quite correct - the King and Queen did stay in London throughout WW2 but only during the day time - they spent the nights at Windsor Castle, away from the nightly bombing blitz on London - for 57 consecutive nights from 7 Sept to 3 Nov 1940 London was very heavily bombed continuously for over eight hours non stop each night. Even so Windsor itself did not quite escape the attention of the Nazi Luftwaffe and its bombs....but nothing on the scale of London.
