Love your channel! Was thinking of flying my Mavic around the San Juan mountains this winter. Is the whole area pretty drone friendly?

Thank you so much for watching, commenting, and being a fellow drone pilot. The San Juans are National Forests for the most part. So yes, drone friendly. Obviously don't disturb the wildlife, including the hikers, but otherwise, yes, its a great place to be "free" and let your creativity fly. There are places that are National Parks though, so be aware of where you are. I accidently flew once in the Black Canyon (granted this is north of the San Juans), not knowing I was in a National Park, not a National Forest. So be aware of where you are. Also, like down by Telluride where there is a commercial airport, beware of flight traffic coming in low. Also, use your apps, check for other drones, check flight restrictions, be safe and have fun. Find a good REMOTE place like a county road to launch from. The more remote, the less amount of people, the better off you will be. Unfortuntely some people feel you want to hear their opinion while you are focused on flying, so spare yourself the distraction and irritation. Pretty much the San Juans are my favorite drone spot - hands down.

@ amazing thank you so much for this info! Any recommendations on access roads / takeoff spots in the San Juans that are accessible during the winter?

@zackseckler The San Juans, being quite a large range of mountains, would be difficult to do, not knowing your general area, be it Silverton, Lake City, Telluride, Ouray, Ridgeway, Durango, etc. I am not sure where you are launching from/staying to give any possible options. If you wish, go to my home channel page and look three rows below the channel title. There will be a short description and a "More" link at the end. Click that link, and a popup should appear. Find the "Click to show email" link, find my contact email, send me an email, let me know what town you will be by, and I can give you a few pins of my favorite areas in the area you will be staying and you will not be making it public. I am happy to help. Roads being open in the winter is a challenge for sure; some areas are not accessible, so it depends on where you are going to be.
