Grew up hearing and watching the Hawks, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikta, Keith Magnuson, Tony Esposito & Denis Hull also comes to mind... Awesome after all of these years to actually look up this video to watch the game & to know the actual date that they won. Better late than never... # 1 #ChicagoBlackhawk fan,

I was only eleven at the time, but that game was one of the highlights of my life. I'd forgotten some of the details- like how I felt when "Tex" Evans scored that fourth goal.
Thanks for bringing back some glorious memories. Here's hoping it won't be too long before the Hawks hoist Lord Stanley's mug once again!

I was only 8 so I don't remember seeing this on TV, but our family was a hockey family who never missed many Wings or Hawks games in Windsor/Vancouver. My dad's HVAC company used to sponsor the Detroit Red Wings in the 50s. But when we moved to Vancouver in 1959, dad became a HUGE Bobby Hull fan, and I followed suit. I STOPPED watching a few years ago bc I don't like watching Mama's Boys on skates, that throw tantrums when they get hit with a legal body check. Like my dad said in the 70s, "The American Dollar will destroy the NHL in Canada!" He was VERY accurate about that!

THE best player statistically (NHL/WHA) considering that Hull actually was the MOST fouled player ever! His stats are just short of Gretzkys, but #99 got a free pass (no hitting) from the NHL to 'sell' the game in Calif.and FLA., etc. to bring in more $hekel$ for the owners/NHL.

It was one of the few times in Stanley Cup history that the third and fourth place teams played in the Finals.
Chicago finished third and upset the defending champions, the Canadiens, in an opening six game series winning the last two games by an identical 3-0 score.
The Habs were going for a record sixth straight Cup.
Detroit beat Toronto in five games.
The most exciting game the Hawks actually played was game three against the Habs.
With the series tied 1-1, they won 2-1 in triple O'T.

Hull was huge in this series as was Jim Pappin. Dryden made an unbelievable save on him,as Pappin had his arms up, thought he had scored!!! Hull made a great backcheck play on Frank Mahovlich in that game as well. Dryden didn't know where Hull's shots were going,he hit the post twice in the series as I recall

@@eddriver7815 Even tho Tony 'Doh' lol was a HOFer I'm not a big fan either! For OBVIOUS reasons! His brother Phil said Tony was near-sighted and needed glasses. I missed that series bc I was in Hawaii 6 mos of 1971, but I read every box score in the Honolulu papers the next day! That summer Bobby Hull (my HERO) honoured my dad at a Ford Dealership in Vancouver! I missed that too, but I saw the b&w pics when I got home! Decades later, I read inklings of Billy Reay benching Bobby Hull in that 7th game, and playing lesser players, with the Hawks behind 3-2! It's probably just a coincidence that Reay played for the Habs for 8 seasons in the 50s..? Billy Reay...head coach for the Chicago Black Hawks (1963-1977). He won the most games for a Chicago Black Hawks coach. Although he coached the Black Hawks to three Stanley Cup Finals (1965, 1971, and 1973), he never won the Cup. Yup, Reay NEVER won a Cup with a STACKED team for at least 11 years! Mind you, he coached for the WORST owners in the NHL at that time.
So, I had to WAIT 49ish years to see the Hawks raise the Cup. Kane and Toews are NOT Hull and Mikita tho! They just did not 'do it for me' in comparison.

If you're wondering why the score graphic on-screen was enclosed by an oval, it's because the main sponsor of CBC's "Hockey Night In Canada" back then was Imperial Oil, the Canadian division of what was then Standard Oil Of New Jersey (Esso), which marketed gasoline under the Esso name in Canada. Of course, Esso had (in the U.S.)/still has (in Canada) an oval logo.

It really was a kind of special time in Chicago sports. The Go-Go White Sox a few years earlier ('59) won the AL pennant and although they didn't beat the Dodgers in the World Series, still had the town buzzing. A few years later ('63), the Bears would beat the NY Giants to win the then NFL Championship. Many forget that after the Blackhawks won this Stanley Cup, they went back to the finals the following season, but lost to Toronto who would win the first of three straight Stanley Cups..The Hawks would get back to the finals in '65 but lost to Montreal in a hard fought 7 game series..

    Sega Saturn 64:
The CBC may have the full game telecast in it's archive.
By the way, Game 6 of the 1961 Finals were picked-up by Chicago's WGN-TV, but I once read that there merely got fed the CBC broadcast.
WGN began broadcasting some Blackhawk away games on a regular basis the next fall (October, 1961).
I don't know if there was a local Detroit telecast of the game or not.
You may also want to find out if a complete audio tape of the Chicago radio broadcast of Game 6 exists. I don't know who carried the Hawks on radio then; depending on who carried the games that season, the tape may be in the archives of WGN, WLS, WBBM, or whoever holds the audio archive of the old WMAQ.

I was 11 years old , and a rabid Hawks fan . I envisioned many more Cups to come, but little did know it would take 50 years for another one .
It used to be said that the Hawks had ... TOO MANY CHIEFS - AND NOT ENOUGH INDIANS
Stan Mikita was an excellent TWO WAY player , but as I grew up I discovered that Booby Hull was a ONE WAY FLOATER that hurt the team in years to come .
Sooooo much talent ..... soooooo little championships .
    They became a PUNCHLINE .

The Defense wasn't the strongest, solid, but Montreal and Toronto had veritable Iron curtains with more depth than the Hawks. Guys got traded away, and while they always had a solid defense, it was never the best. Glenn Hall could do a lot, but when facing teams with better defenses that could hold the Chicago offense at bay, it only happened once.

Secondly, the Wings' number one goalie at the time was Terry Sawchuck- one of the best ever to don the pads. And Hank Bassen- the guy who played in this game- was no slouch, either.
And the Wings generally finished fourth out of the Original Six during that period- the last team to qualify for the playoffs.

@MWTCC The NHL returned to this type of format in 2003/2004.
Now the reason the change was made in 70/71 was because it was found that white clothing got very dirty during travel and it was a problem than modern cleaning has solved!

I never missed a game between 2009-2017. Actually I missed ONE game Nov. 1, 2014 vs Toronto. (we lost). I had a broken leg from a motorcycle accident, and the bartender would not put that game on TV!

The entire country watches College sports. Not just college kids. If I wanted to go into colleges only watched by college kids I would have added Chicago state, UIC, and more. As far as professional sports, well I'm not sure what sports Chicago doesn't have. We have every sport at nearly every level.

Also Chicago had a average record of 22,247 where toronto had 19,312. You can use the excuse of stadium capacity, but then I can use the excuse back that the only reason toronto sells out is cause they have a smaller arena. If we had the same size arena we would sell out every game as well.

    • @mr.blackhawk142
      @mr.blackhawk142 Рік тому

Chicago Stadium attendance always read 16,666 bc that was the the Fire Marshal's limit! In reality there was about 20,000 or more PACKED in! There will NEVER be anything like the Madhouse!!!

@@mr.blackhawk142 I remember listening to my Canadiens playing Chicago Sunday nights ( we always played at home Sat. night) and hearing the big organ. That was a noisy place! Also, the distance between the blue lines was less than in most of the other arenas, encouraging a more crowded physical game. Now all NHL ice surfaces are the same size I believe.

Did you read my comment at all. I'm not talking about revenue, in fact I'm confused of where revenue even came into play here. I'm talking about attendences. If to say Toronto sells out so many games, maybe they should add more seats. I don't have a problem with you jumping into a conversation, but I suggest you go through the previous conversation. I think you may have misread it.

@stilleavy What...14 cups...before the expansion and suddenly they get some compitition and now they can't win at all. And the other majority of cups comes from your canadian football team which the league consists of 8 teams. Seems like as long as you have little compition you can win but as soon as more teams come in Toronto buckles under the pressure.

In the entire original 6 era, this is the ONLY team to win a cup that wasn't named the Maple Leafs, Canadiens or Red Wings. The NHL was so imbalanced during this time. The Rangers, Bruins and Blackhawks won a combined ONE Stanley Cup during this time period. That was this one right here. I guess karma is catching up though now especially to the Leafs, who are about to have the longest Cup drought in NHL history.
