I was raised by a very religious mom and a scientist nonbeliever dad. I lost my own faith past the age of 50. I very much wish I could join my parents and loved ones in a beautiful heaven. But I would rather embrace reality and accept that they are gone forever and that my time is limited, as well. I must make the most of my time alive and embrace love, nature, and explore my own talents. My memories of my loved ones keep them alive for me. Accepting reality is much better than any comforting pile of untruths and manipulations. I miss those seductive promises of religion, but I would rather live in the truth than in false promises. And I do not miss the threats, manipulation, and coercion that religion employs.

With the amount of sin Christians/theists commit (un)knowingly, I think it is rather bold to think that any of their relatives end up in heaven. But hardly any Christian realizes that and if they do, they live with great anxiety.

@@alanhilder1883 I honestly haven’t the faintest idea at what you’re trying to get at, Alan.
Yes, Christians live in fear of the wrongs they’ve done. Is this supposed to be a bad thing? I’d say that fear of wrongdoing is a far cry better than no fear of wrongdoing.
What I was striking at was the oddity of a nonbeliever talking about the fallibility of those who believe in sin *as if* this somehow makes believing loved ones might yet get into heaven is unwarranted. Christians hope that they and their loved ones will get into heaven. And yes, verily that involves some degree of anxiety as to the fate of their souls. Hence the importance of evangelization and Christian charity. Again, so what? What is the original post I responded to supposed to prove? That Christians care about others and aren’t perfect? How is this a knock against Christianity?

If you really want to know, at your own time ask him for a sign, I guarantee you will see something.

I also read the Quran and it made me more secure in being an Atheist. One needs to read these texts to get the point.

As though they were competing with each other for something, which makes no sense bc they are seperate fields of inquiry & deal with completrly diff subject matter and serve distinctly different purposes. They are not mutualy exclusive, or in opposition to each other. The two are completely compatible with one another and are even complementary. There is no reason why a person would need to decide between the two instead of just embracing both.

From the perspective that religion is false, it cannot tell us anything about morality so we have to look elsewhere. My opinion is that morality is about maximising pleasure and minimising suffering for all consciousness in the universe (or multiverse if you believe that's a thing). That said, I doubt those people could find meaning in the things that I do, such as awe at the wonders of the natural world or viewings of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. I don't get the purpose in my life from religion. Been there, done that. I don't get my purpose from science. I don't get it from other people or from myself. Who do I get it from? Nowhere. I don't have any purpose in my life, and furthermore, I don't want one. Why do I need to have one? When we talk about the purpose an object has, or the meaning a word or phrase has, we talk about the way it is used, the way it was meant to be used, or the process it was made for doing. These are all externally imposed, if only because tools and words aren't sentient, but even when a human talks about giving purpose to their own life, I still don't see why it's such a great thing. I still see the idea that life as a whole should have a purpose or a meaning is a strange and unnecessary idea, probably a relic that remains in a person or a society that used to be immersed in religious thinking. The idea that your life in its entirety exists for one reason, one goal, and furthermore that it SHOULD be like that, is an idea I don't want any part in, regardless of where it comes from. It sounds like an unhealthy preoccupation, an obsession, something that consumes your life and your thoughts. I can get by just fine without it, and if you don't, then that's on you.

Ah, click bait strikes again. 👎
Tried to find what purpose and meaning to life science provides, and one fellow even said it doesn't provide any.
The only science of any relevance here is psychology. At its simplest level, it promotes health by ridding us of our phobias and developing self-confidence. Becoming good at something gives us at least "meaning". Sitting back and looking at a job well done can be both meaningful and provide a sense of purpose. But that's not related to science. Science puts little credence in experience, even though that's how we know most of what we know.
Does thinking one "knows" how old the universe is, give us either meaning or purpose? Does marveling at evolution and the vast variety of life, give us those two things? (Wonder can perhaps influence them.)
Should our lives even have meaning or purpose? The meaning of life is adaptability (part of the definition of "life" in the dictionary), the value of life is progressability. As for purpose? That's individual. Generally, we choose what the purpose is that we want our life to serve. And it doesn't come from science, although it might be about science.
Having friends who love us, and we love back, helps make our life worthwhile. Science will never be able to touch that.

(My Understanding) Even though I am a Hindu, I noticed that our more scientific and deeper teachings let us know that the entity we know as "God" is in reality more of a observer that watches us and doesn't really do anything. If anything rather than a creator I'd still say our world may be more than seemingly designed by a creator In one of our scriptures: The Yoga Vasistha , it states that for example: The many gods in Hinduism are actually made for whatever you call those with lower intellect to comprehend the universe with, examples include Lord Hanuman being a superhero who by chanting his prayer will remove all obstacles (Nothing actually happens) etc.
Its a huge problem of the lower intellect folks to not be able to understand the universe or even basic things for that matter
Luckily, the Hindu culture seemed to understand that more than meets the eye so I'm good. Your cultures have philosophers and Scientists like Darwin who debunked the "god" thing right, we Indians have our own scientists even from years back who understood.
So yeah, Science is more fulfilling and luckily our older culture understood that but Modern day Indians are less accepting.
It is interesting learning about scientific worldviews across the world

I find purpose in both science and religion, it’s not an either, or. Science teaches me facts, as scientists have learned, and my religion teaches me that I existed before birth and will after I die, and how to love and serve one another as science does not. I serve at my local homeless food center, regularly, along with many other religious groups but have never yet met an atheist or science group serving there.

But all of what you just mentioned doesn't require religion. It is good that you chose to make a net positive from religion but there are plenty that that cause tremendous harm based of their religious beliefs. I know you say that you don't see any Atheists volunteering in the places that you do, well that could be due to a number of factors. One is that if one or two are there they may just pretend so that they don't get that weird look that you get from christians when you tell them that you are not a believer or they could just avoid the places that church people volunteer and just volunteer elsewhere. I myself as an Agnostic Atheists don't do any volunteering but I'm always helping others in their time of need I'm always committing selfless acts of kindness, but my reason for not volunteering is due to not having the time to do so. Another point is that you may see less people like myself self volunteering because we know that there are a lot of you guys out there in the trenches holding it down and we greatly appreciate it. It is all for the betterment of our shared world!

It's pretty simple to understand with religion *life* has no value, NEVER let a theist denigrate you by saying "what is the value of life if you are an atheist" NEVER and we can reason VERYA easily that is the case with religious people since this life is *just a step to reach the afterlife*.

Say you prove a deity exists. So what? Now you gotta prove christianity is the correct theism. Furthermore NOW you gotta prove that your specific denomination is the correct one. Proving if a god exists or not does nothing to help your case.
