Actually- Hopkit became Deadpaw/foot. He had a bit of a crooked paw at first- but after getting it cut on a rock it became totally useless, so Heatherstar made his apprentice name Deadpaw
It's both. He had a birth defect that he could walk on fairly well. Then he stepped a a very sharp rock that went deep into his foot. It got infected and he almost died.

My daughter said Feathertail went on a journey to the sun-drown place, and on the way back she died saving the Tribe from Sharptooth. She then explained that Rippleclaw died on the journey upstream.
