Not sure the landing was so hard. He smartly inclined his board in such way that he rebounced on the back side. He didn't rebounced on his back (even if it looked like that from front angle camera). But the visual effect was shocking.
That was insane! I love when athletes come up with crazy af new tricks or find creative new ways to ride the same course and just blow the commentators minds. Or even just when they're so on point in their run that its like they're in their own race. Danny Hart's muddy 2011 UCI run, Aaron Gwin's chainless win in 2015.
I was at Champery that day... We even had troubles walking up the hill. The fact that someone was able to ride without major mistakes in this bloody rain is mindblowing indeed! ;) Also from the videos you dont get just how steep the course is!
When taking a kicker, you usually jump far enough to land where the slope is inclined. Fridge never jumped that far and dropped where the slope was still flat. This landing usually causes considerable pressure on knees etc.. Instead of absorbing the full pressure with the knees, fridge absorbed part of the impact with the tail of the board by bending it through (see at 1:23). Then he bounced of the ground in a backward motion and hence backflipped. stoked af
Luis's point is also true, but also makes this crazy is that he rode the feature in a completely unintended manner. It's designed to be jumped off of like a halfpipe -- riders come from the outside and up the vertical section towards the middle. Instead, fridge went straight down the middle of the feature, which isn't built like a jump so he didn't even get enough air to comfortably land on the downhill landing section, landed on the knuckle (insanely tough on your legs/knees), and popped a backflip off of basically just a little hill (no actual jump in the snow is built there)
imagine landing a jump barely higher than you jumped and after landing you instantly slide(fall, no matter how strong you are, physics dude) and make a cool frontflip instead... the skill show there is mostly in his muscular memory ( after thousands of hours skiing he know how to land even before think in it) and also a freak creativity trick
@@a3rial533 I don't think so, judging from his reaction. He seems to have established this as a way of emergency landing if he doesn't have the right speed or is in an akward position approaching the kicker. And he was lucky to actually land it as a perfect backflip. Seems this way to me, at least.
My god i think my spine would have come out of the top of my head from that landing, Fridge must be built like a fridge

I'm very new to Snowboarding and just not experienced enough to understand the complexity of that last move. Can someone explain please?

Are we sure that wasn't just a lucky save?
Man did he miss that pop but man did he stick that landing.
Absoulutely cruced “controller died”

Why does he have a backpack on?
mission failed successfully

The eternal question now...did he mean it?
100%, no one in their right mind would do that without a plan
