King Alphonso of England? (son and heir of King Edward I)

The tragically short life of the elder brother of Edward II. Heir to throne of England for most of his life, his early death changed the course of history. This documentary looks at why an English prince was given such an un-English name and examines the brief life of this son of a King and Queen whose lifelong romance survived the early deaths of many of their children.

As a Spanish name, Alphonso is derived from the Gothic name, "Athalafuns". In Old English, this would have been rendered as "Æthelfús", a name which surprisingly appears as belonging to a bishop of 9th century Hereford. So, ironically, with a little adjustment, Alphonso's name hewed closer to the names of the Anglo-Saxon kings than the previous Angevin and Norman kings.
