Just do yourself the favor of incorporating some sort of geotextile first. This will help in at least two ways. The first being is weed control because trying to mow and weed around the tracks and rail ties is extremely labir intensive which gets put off and renders the whole project a complete waste within a short time. The second being, to stabilize the soil and reduce attrition of the ballest into the soil. The final suggestion would be to install the geotextile and ballest first before adding the rails. As you already know, putting the rails first and then trying to add ballest to sodden weedy soil is not very easy or effective. You may say that you need some leeway to adjust the curves and such first, which is a good argument, but I would suggest building a section of test track that you can pull in temporarily to mark out the best path and then lay the groundwork. Cheers, I look forward to seeing the new project however you manage to get it done.
Great to see this project ramping up again - it's been one of my greatest inspirations the last few years. Eventually I'll build one in Portugal (come visit!) Let's make this happen! Go Tim!
UA-cam didn't let me edit my own comment, or maybe i was just too stupid - anyways, it is always a pleasure watching! Towards the biggest garden railway in at least western ireland! Onwards! 😅
Here's me enthusiastically waving from the EU mainland. I love the great garlic railroad 🤩😍🤩 and would love to lend a hand im person, but I fear it won't work out anytime soon.
Yeah! You starting your railroad is how I found your channel, originally. Glad to see you're finally able to get back at the thing that brought me here. :)
Sad to hear your harvest was ruined last year, life can be so tough, much love to you both and all the best for next harvest and the continued railway project
Dear inventor Tim 👍👌👏 Hooray 🙌, at last another garden railway video and even some vids in sight. I love this project. 💚 Unfortunately I live too far away (in Germany) and I simply can't even afford the shipping costs. But if, I would love to donate a lot of wooden sleepers, pegs (made out of old zinc coated water pipe and maybe already drilled in the way you need them), screws, bolts and nuts. I'm really sad that I cannot afford to support you in other ways than only being enthusiastic about your fabulous garden railway, giving 👍and commenting positively, sigh. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards, luck and especially health to Sandra, you and all the animals/plants. Post Scriptum: Your "get started" philosophy is great! 👍👌👏
The rails return! Glad you've had some more planning of it, these projects take time. Your tracks will undoubtedly see more practical use than the thing I built as I have not nearly the mass of material to move as on your farm. Carry on!
Well, that finally did it you’re my first subscription on Patreon. The railway was the project that first brought me to this channel, and it’s always been my favorite. It’s a great mix of practicality, fun, and eccentricity.
I cant support finincially, but I can say that your railway work brings me great joy, and I'm rooting for you! I'm glad that the garlic railway is expanding once again.
At almost 79 (next Christmas Day is my 79th birthday) I can't afford any more than an emotional wave but...........I love your channel. I love your various gadgets and knowledge of so much, and having once built a 7 1/4" gauge around my own garden in the UK I am a miniature railway nut. Sadly there do not seem to be any here where I live now with my lovely wife of many years - North East of Bangkok in Thailand.but I do send you emotional greetings in support - keep going and if you come across an old moped engine - that has more than enough power to pull your muck train geared down so do make a loco as well huh? Must be a few smashed boy-racer Honda 90's lying on scrap heaps surely, from teenagers who thought they were budding Mike Hawthorne's.
Maybe a locomotive would be good to have. I know you have tornado, but a much more practical loco would probably be an electric or gas powered one. Old golf carts are cheap if you come across them, and there you have a powerful DC electric motor with a throttle, which could run off a few car batteries. Or maybe a kids four-wheeler could donate its gasoline engine. Lifan makes cheap copies of old honda engines, the 107cc version is really popular in sweden. You can even get them with reverse and an automatic clutch. Used in good working condition they only cost around 200 euros where I live
I hope I don’t spoil the fun but that sounds like a huge project, lots of metres, lots of work, lots of material... Have you ever thought about this: You have horses and donkeys, you could design a carrier for them in which they could carry baskets or buckets of manure. Make a footpath from the barn to the garlic and you won't have to load wheelbarrows onto a railway wagon. Ok, I can imagine that you don't enjoy this as much as building the railway... By the way: trekking with horses is coming very much into vogue. If you can design a good carrier system perhaps you can sell it, too.
The whole point of the railway is to decrease the churnup of the pathway, and the truckwagon carries 3 wheelbarrows at a time by one person pushing. Plus it's cool.
I am definitely glad I ran across your channel years ago!! Cool projects and a great attitude!! Definitely looking forward to seeing the railway expanded!!
Great news! Your other adventures are fun to, but the railway is why I found this channel. For the whole line, take it slow in the pace the wallet allows you to.
I love seeing that the railway project is on again. The railway was how I initially discovered your channel and it's still my favourite series of yours. Unfortunately I can't afford to help financially but you have some support words :)
glad to see garlic is back and hope the mini railway will not be ruinous project. i can not quite give any money for i have none so i at least wish you good and succesfull crop and miscelanious tat sales. maybe some mott sales too i reckon that little vehicle deserves some love.
Hoping it all goes well! glad to see the railway back again. since it seems to be such a long stretch you need to build it you perhaps should have a re-working of your locomotive? Tornado is good as it is but from what i remember, it had some power problems, and a brake that didn't really do the job. Probably would be best with all wheels driven for a bit more traction. Perhaps with a connecting rod? And also all the wheels with braking. And i remember you saying your compressor could only fill the tank with 100psi, but it would take 3000psi so im exited to se if you ever revissit it if you ever get a new compressor powerful enough! Whatever you do Tim im exited to see it!!
This is a thought, ok? But, have you thought about making Wood Pellets for woot pellet stoves? Maybe they don’t exist in your country. Anyway, these are somewhat easy to make and, for some reasion hard to find in the winter. Just a thought.
If moisture was the problem, before investing in the future, make it more futureproof by making sure moisture will be less of a promblem. And with weather as it is, also plan for too little moisture from the air.
Oh my goodness! So many people are sending money. These people should deserve to be on a list of people who could oneday receave an exclusive coupon/discount for buying Tim's Garlic, Charcoal fertalizer, framed Art, or whatever else IronPig can sell in the future Thanks to these 🎉brave lads🎉 who take the finacial risk to invest in a litile industrial railway in WEST IRELAND.
Maybe you could have people finance one length of rail, and get there name stamped on it or something. I would find it a nice thought if my name was somewhere on your beautiful railway.
There you go again, making a practical farm materiel handling system--whilst scratching your head trying to think of something to sell. You could sell home-railway kits. At one time, in places such as Connecticut, rich actors such as Howard Gillette would install scale railways, as a prestige thing. Perhaps a simple, modern, inexpensive gas-powered or electric locomotive would be handy. I am sorry about your son's loss.
Could you add a trailer to your electric car instead of using a train. Build a wooden platform out of pallets and drive the route, hire to small digger (Bobcat) to level the route. You could built the train track and replace the electric car wheels with train track wheels. Great video.
How wonderful Tim something to settle down with on this winter’s evening. You really are marvellous 🤩 at what you do .Your good for our blood pressures and bring enlightenment to everyone. So so good luck 😉.
Lovely to hear that the railway is coming back! I am quite curious if your ever going to start using Tornado for the railway... if you even still have them, of course.
I like that philosophy; "I can't afford to finish right now, but I can afford to start."
❤ this
If its good enough for HS2... 😂
You can't afford it, I can't afford it... Together we can make it work! Great stuff, Tim, all of it! From Luxembourg to Ireland, 🍻
That's absolutely brilliant - thanks Maxin!!
Hooray! The railway is my favourite project of yours!
3:22 - "It's a huge project, that I cannot afford to finish, but I can afford to start." - Well said. The right spirit for such a task.

Brilliant! Thanks very much Isaack : - )
Thanks!
Brilliant!! Thank you mzimmerman : - )
I don't know why, but it is just so satisfying to see man changing his world to his image.
Good luck mate, may you build many miles of railway! One day I’d like to build my own, but for now I’ll settle for watching you build yours.
That's brilliant - thank you very much!
the practical use for your railway is my favorite part
Danke!
UA-cam didn't let me edit my own comment, or maybe i was just too stupid - anyways, it is always a pleasure watching! Towards the biggest garden railway in at least western ireland! Onwards! 😅
Thank you very much - brilliant!!!
I enjoy your projects but the railway is my favourite
Excellent! Thank you very much : - )
Here's me enthusiastically waving from the EU mainland. I love the great garlic railroad 🤩😍🤩 and would love to lend a hand im person, but I fear it won't work out anytime soon.
Thanks very much R! Brilliant!!
Let's build that railway
Wow! Thank you very much! : - )
Waving enthusiastically from Montana!
Yay, I love all your projects but the railway is my favourite, it was what got me here in the first place.
A railway is a railway and I have an urge to finance it even though I am a poor student xD
That's very kind of you, MrOpenGL - thank you very much!!
That's a lot of steel track, hopefully UA-cam will pay well, and I'm sure it will, great video
We can do this together, we can do this!
3:45 *Waves enthusiastically from Sweden*... :D
Subscribed for the railway. Enjoyed the other projects. But glad you are getting back to it.
Yeah! You starting your railroad is how I found your channel, originally. Glad to see you're finally able to get back at the thing that brought me here. :)
Make a gofundme so you can make the line
Yes. Let us know how we can fund a rail or a few sleepers.
The railway is what brought me to the channel and I've been hooked ever since. Glad to hear you're back in the garlic and railway game again :)
Waving in an enthusiastic way from over here! :D
Sad to hear your harvest was ruined last year, life can be so tough, much love to you both and all the best for next harvest and the continued railway project
Hurray for the return of the railway!
Tim, put your Patreon link icon up in the video for the End Card , people want to support you. Make it easy for them. 😀 Eric.
I am really exited! Thank's for catching the project up again! 👍
Here is "emotional" support for the railway!👌👍
Sorry to hear about your hardship, and terribly grateful to hear it starting back up again!
I would love to come and join you once I manage to get to Ireland 🇮🇪 😅
More railway. Yay! This is what I signed up for! :)
That’s probably the biggest muck heap for 50 miles too. 👋 from NZ. 😅
Ambitious project Tim. Will be fun to watch.
We are all behind, bit far for me to help, but good luck.
I’m glad to hear the risk of vampires has gone down.
Wish you lots of luck with this bro. Safe travels. Ken
I hope you can do it that's how I found you,. Miss seeing the railway but do like your other stuff too.
Tim, I've been waiting for a year for you to carry on with your garden Railroad! My favorite part of your channel! 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 Thank's so much 😎👍
Dear inventor Tim

This is super exciting! I love the videos about the railway
Could we see a satellite view of the plan?? So happy that this project is starting back up again (:
The rails return! Glad you've had some more planning of it, these projects take time. Your tracks will undoubtedly see more practical use than the thing I built as I have not nearly the mass of material to move as on your farm. Carry on!
I have been waiting on an update like this for a long time. I’m anxious to see the project continue.
looks like a good route Tim.

Looking forward to the new railway, but for now, really enjoyed taking a virtual stroll around the place!

This is good news Tim. It can only lead eventually to a new locomotive engine, thingy. Maybe a Mott locomotive! Its all good fun. Cheers 🇨🇦

"I can't afford to finish right now, but I can afford to start." Thats some good motivation right there. a little bit at a time is still progress.
I hope I don’t spoil the fun but that sounds like a huge project, lots of metres, lots of work, lots of material...

for some of the 500 sleepers 🪵

Yeah the railway should give you lots of views and be interesting to watch! Its a win-win! Also I want to see you make a small locomotive to pull it!
Good for you Tim, sending positive vibes. You are still my favourite thing on the whole internet 👍
Greetings from Torrance, Calif., USA! I'll follow for ''algorithm support. If I can do anything else, I will!
I wish you much luck (and joy) with this project, Tim :)
Good luck. Thats a lot of stuff to move.
YEAHH
We are moving large payloads with reduced effort with this one 🗣🔈🔥
Great video !
glad to see garlic is back and hope the mini railway will not be ruinous project.
i can not quite give any money for i have none so i at least wish you good and succesfull crop and miscelanious tat sales. maybe some mott sales too i reckon that little vehicle deserves some love.
Yay!
If you want some planning advice for the next (ideally steam) locomotive you can always ask an Austrian
😊
The tasks that take the longest are the ones we never start, so good for you for starting!
It would be fun to sell/buy a symbolic "Tim's rail ticket"
Splendid
YES! Super excited to follow your train journey once again! Good luck!
I'm happy that the field railway is continuing. Unfortunately I can't help because I'm from Germany, but I wish you good luck
Great to see you back!!
Enthusiastic waving and virtual hugs from far away Ardèche !
I’ve missed the compressed air locomotive! Hope you get that beut going again!
Good luck 👍interesting project
Yayyyy railway videos are back!

This is me waving enthusiastically from Pennsylvania!
I'd come help practically, but my ancestors got a little fed up with the English. XD
No problem. The farm is in Ireland.
You will get on well with the Irish, where this farm is, as they also don’t care for the English
my first video of yours im watching on a laptop
you have a great channel, friend.
You can do it!
I can’t wait for the high speed rail. 200 km per hour should be fine.
Hoping for a 2025 calendar of workshop projects especially the railway

This is a cool idea. Like the “buy a brick” initiatives for typical structures.
It is a good idea - I wonder how to make it happen..
I'm very enthusiastic! Make the locomotive use an electric motor, for convenience!
Well rest assured I waved enthusiastically! 😊😊😊
There you go again, making a practical farm materiel handling system--whilst scratching your head trying to think of something to sell. You could sell home-railway kits. The Railroad Must go on.
Finally another RAilway video!!!!
Sorry to hear about your garlic crop. (in Michigan)
