      No offense intended, but ;you seem to reflect the tendency of the German military to overlook the world wide, though not universal, reaction to the bombing of Guernica. I feel it most certainly played a role, though a different one for obvious reasons, to the public response to the German Navy being suckered into sinking the Lusitania. German Military, and the Kaiser, never seemed to appreciate the impact in the allied countries, at least among many very influential individuals. I would add that the lesson is still remembered in the US by the way in which Colin Powell took the trouble to have the copy of the painting 'Guernica" covered up when he gave his press conference in front of it at the UN.
      No, I have no evidence that the Lusitania was instructed to both carry war material and to make itself an easy target in British waters. I just consider it quite obvious that it was so instructed to do such a blindingly stupid thing. I am confident you understand the effect of the propaganda regarding Belgium in WWI. Same thing really.

    Im spanish and all I can say that we learned from the civil war is that guerrila tactics don't work at all if the enemy knows your capabilities and the terrain as well as you. Sorta like the best counter for guerrilla warfare is a good intelligence on them.

    • @oddballsok
      @oddballsok 7 років тому +19

      that is why it is a civil war

    • @eom1682
      @eom1682 7 років тому +46

      Well, what I meant is that it turned out to be a "the army vs the people" kind of war, pretty much like when we had the french invasion, ecept the army already knew everything the republicans had, their territory and all. in a modern example, the civil wars currently happening in middle east, "the people" there are actually a militia of jihadist and "freedom" fighters coming and operating from neighbour territories. Yes, this did happen in the spanish civil war, but it was just a minor point (some german air division, some tussian equipment lend and the international brigades, but that was just a mere footnote on the whole thing). So in modern middle east civil wars, the "army" side lacks this intelligence factor and I think its why the rebels can actually hide and operate so "freely".

    • @AmNotHere911
      @AmNotHere911 7 років тому +12

      ""the people" there are actually a militia of jihadist and "freedom" fighters coming and operating from neighbour territories. " - I actually know something about this conflict: 1) Assad actually has as many foreigners fighting for him as Daeesh - he has the IRGC (Iranian)/Al-Quds Brigades (Iranian)/Hezbollah (Lebanese)/Hashd militias (Iraqi Shiite)/Fatemiyoun militias (Afghan Shiite) and the Slavonic Corps (Russian). 2) Daeesh is not the opposition the FSA (which even the Russian government acknowledges not only exists but is 'the legitimate opposition') and Syrian Islamists like Ahrar are and they're split in terms of fighters they have (ie FSA has 50% of the opposition fighters). 3) Assad is fighting the people because Assad is waging a sectarian war against Syria's Sunni majority. 4) This is a war against the 'people' because Assad is an autocrat who is fighting a nation-wide 'insurgency that began as non-sectarian and non-violent LCC-led reform movement. 5) The reason why Assad is losing is because the SAA (stands for: Syrian Arab Army), excluding the Republican Guards, doesn't exist as a professional entity anymore (all the Sunni soldiers/officers have either joined the FSA or are refugees in Europe) and it's the non-Arab Afghan Shiite soldiers (led by IRGC officers) who are doing the fighting ergo an incompetent militia men fighting other militia men.
      There are similarities between the Spanish civil wars though - the flattening of Aleppo (especially of every single Medicine San Frontier hospitals) by Russian jets is comparable to Guernica purely because the Russians have adopted the same approach they used in the 2nd Chechen war.

    • @eom1682

      AmNotHere911 1- I wasnt impliying that DAESH had anything to do whatsoever, because the guerrilla tactics and AK rifles are not exclusive to terrorists you know XD. 2- Im no expert in that war, but the limitied knoweledge I have about it is that (and not impliying I advocate for any side) a side of the govermenent and army goes against a mass of its citizens and others because X reasons. What I was triying to say is that if they had a good intelligence net they would probably end the war in weeks because whats actually keeping either side alive is the lack of information, since im pretty sure if they knew the others wereabouts and state, some swift bombardments or bomb attacks could destroy the coordination, supplies and hopes of one side.

    • @eom1682
      @eom1682 7 років тому +16

      Precisely, because the lack of intelligence, guerrilla tactics work. The US army was so much superior than the vietnam militia and still lost. If they had a map of where is every vietnam force and its quantity and capalities, they war would be over in weeks.

  • @EstellammaSS
    @EstellammaSS 7 років тому +87

    You should do one on the mislearned lessons of Spanish Civil War. Like how the Soviets reversed their armor doctrine because their heavy losses to AT gun ambush, but instead of emphasizing the importance of recon and Infantry support they blamed the tanks instead.

    • @MilitaryHistoryVisualized
      @MilitaryHistoryVisualized  7 років тому +26

      Military History Visualized
      English is not my native language, so I tried to find a English source but I can't be sure if it was valid.
      "Soviet Tank Operations in the Spanish Civil War" by Steven J. Zaloga seemed pretty accurate. However I do recommend studying the generals themselves. Namely the creator of deep battle doctrine- Mikhail Tukhachevsky , plus Khalepsky , and Pavlov's character in the Spanish Civil war. And last but not least, the flawed yet advanced, PU-36. It's really an emotional roller coaster seeing how close they were, yet stalled and fell only to learn it and perfect it again-- with blood.

    • @MilitaryHistoryVisualized
      @MilitaryHistoryVisualized  7 років тому +19

      thank you, German sources are also fine :) Well, sadly I can't spent time on studying individual characters for a video, 90-95 % of my time is spent on other stuff than reading. I wish I could invest more time, but than I couldn't put out these videos.

    • @MilitaryHistoryVisualized
      @MilitaryHistoryVisualized  7 років тому +16

      found the article btw. looks great

    • @EstellammaSS
      @EstellammaSS 7 років тому +11

      Military History Visualized Tukhachevsky shouldn't be too long of a read, since he along with his supporters got purged by Stalin. PU-36 is quite important too, you don't have to read it all. Just the "attack" part should be enough, since the Soviets haven't figured it out yet there's some details (some important) missing.
      Cheers, love your channel. ;)

    How about doing a whole episode about the 88 Flak? It would be interesting to know how effective it was in its original role (AA vs Fighters, Ground Support Planes, Bombers...) and what the numbers and statistics where on other targets (e.g. Tanks or Bunkers/Fortifications -> Sewastopol...) plus how it was utilized by the Wehrmacht in action (position and role during a battle)...
    And yeah I am German writing nouns with Capital Letters. ;-)

      yeah, there probably will be at least one video about it, either by Bismarck or by me or both. And as you can see the model is already there. The main issue with stuff like the 88mm FlaK is that usually the source material is often not of the best quality and interesting aspects of organization etc. are hard to find too.

    I would like one video about ground tactics used during the Spanish Civil war. I think it can be interesting since they had some important things like the uses of extended mechanised/armored units (2 brigades on the Republican side, 3 brigades on the Nationalist side), as well as some lessons about fighting in a Schweckpunkt. Also the question of modern urban warfare: the Spanish civil war was the first war with a modern urban battle, the battle for Madrid, which lasted about 3 years.

And western powers ignored that wars since "...people always die like that in Balkans..."

The Italians attacked an entrenched position (ironically also defended by Italians: it was defended by the "Garibaldi" battalion made out of exiled Italians) during a fog and were surprised due to Republican air superiority and great defensive positions.

    It wasn't just the Spanish Civil War tuned out by the US Army Air Corps leadership. They forced out Claire Chennault before that war. He went on to lead the AVG Flying Tigers squadrons to a tremendous kill ratio over the Japanese air forces in China even as the Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps pilots were being mowed down by the Zeros and Oscars over the Pacific Ocean. Chennault trained the Flying Tigers to use hit-and-run air tactics against the Japanese while the rest of the American air forces of 1941 - 1942 had to unlearn the obsolete doctrine of dogfighting as if they were on even or superior terms with the Japanese. After the bitter lessons through Midway in June 1942, the American aviation leadership eventually changed their doctrine during the brutal battles of the Solomon Islands campaign. For more information, look into the "Cactus Air Force, the "Thatch Weave" and the "boom-and-zoom" use of P-38 Lightning fighters in the South Pacific.
    I'm really more interested in what lessons were learned by the German and Soviet leadership from their participation in the Spanish Civil War. I believe Rommel used the 88mm flak guns to destroy superior Soviet-made tanks in Spain, only to repeat the exercise against the French Char-B and British Matilda tanks in May 1940. Guderian and others had to repeat this exercise again in 1941 versus the Soviet BT tanks' successor - the T-34. It wasn't until the Panzer IV's were finally fitted with long-barreled 75mm guns in 1942 that the Germans could become somewhat less reliant on overcoming the superior Soviet tanks through superior combined arms tactics.
    Maybe I missed it, but I would love to see a video here on the development of Finnish air force tactics that allowed them to achieve incredible kill ratio superiority over the VVS (Soviet air force) during the 1939 - 1940 Winter War. The Finns had a piecemeal collection of aircraft that had been mostly cast off by the major powers (e.g. the American-made Brewster Buffalo fighter considered a death trap by American and RAF pilots after heavy losses against the Japanese.) Yet, the Finnish pilots inflicted tremendous losses on the Soviets and were able to sustain valuable reconnaissance over the Karelian Isthmus. I was also intrigued at the Finns' emphasis on logistics during the Winter War. Their soldiers received awards and bonuses for destroying field kitchens as their role in keeping the troops fed and warm in subfreezing temperatures was better understood by the Finnish leadership than by the Soviets. If you are interested, find a copy of "Frozen Hell," an excellent book on the Winter War. Yes, I have seen your video on the Finnish motti tactics. Very good work.
    I'm a history nerd and could do with a bit less humor in these videos as it elicits so many comments that really add nothing to anyone's understanding of the subject matter. I chuckle at some of the jokes, but tire of looking for comments of substance. I guess the game is all about collecting eyeballs and clicks, so I will learn to skim the comments faster.

      Apart from the fact that Rommel never fought in Spain (already mentioned), you don't need an AT gun 88mm to knock out a T-26 or a BT-5 (the main tank models supplied by the Soviets to the Republican Spanish). At short range, the German supplied PAK35/36 (37mm caliber) and the Italian supplied c47/32 (47mm caliber) were good enough AT guns to destroy a T-26 tank. On the reverse, the Soviet supplied PTP-32 (47mm caliber) was an AT gun more than capable to knock out at longer range the mere tankettes (Pzkw I and L3) supplied by Germany and Italy to Nationalist Spanish. Moreover, even the so called Maklen and the Arellano, both of them 37mm guns intended for infantry support role were capable of destroying the thinny armored Nationalist tankettes.

    Well the lessons that could be learnt from the Spanish Civil War are lessons on Aggressive Aireal Campaigns with bombings. There was little development of uses of fighters in the interwar period as fighter tactics are comparatively less complex then Bombing tactics. Bomber Escorts where only developed during the Battle of Britain and where not perfected until 1943/44 when the P51D came into service where you had a moderately maneuverable Fighter that could climb to the same alt as the bombers they're escorting and have the fuel to stay with the bombers all the time.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 6 років тому

      DuckSwagington There were other ways of doing it that did not depend on having escorts around. It depended on how for you were going. Diversion raids were frequently carried out and timed to ensure that the German fighters would be on the ground refuelling and rearming when the main force passed over. It wasn’t necessary to have Mustangs for that. These sorts of things always presented logistical problems because timing was critical and bombers and fighters fly at different speeds. Other factors were there to frustrate planners. It didn’t work at Schweinfurt because of the weather.

      Its 'Murica, not Murcia. The apostrophe is for the missing letter A, thus Amurica. We all know that the proper spelling and pronunciation is AMERICA, right? But there exists in the southern states of the U.S. a minority of white people who are on the lower end of the socio-economic scale and tend to be poorly educated. They have strong accents and tend to be patriotic - but for purely emotional reasons. And when they want to express the idea of American superiority or their support of America, they say " "Murica! " Its an attempt to give a phonetic spelling to the way they say it. Understand? Its humor.

You could ask why Germany didn't employ field artillery in an anti tank role as much as the UK.

    The Spanish Civil War was important for a geopolitical reason too: namely that Europe and America were less worried about Hitler than they were about Stalin. All European countries ended up either directly or indirectly supporting the Nationalists while the USSR supported the Republic. The only other government which lent any support to the Republic was that of Leon Blum. The vast majority of the attention in Europe in the 1930s was focussed on the expansion of communism and some, particularly the British, were completely blindsided by it. Fortunately, the British parliament - led at that time by Neville Chamberlain - chose not to listen too closely to the paranoia of the Foreign Office, read the situation correctly and went about rearming anyway.

Stalin championed Hitler because in order for the reds to advance, as they did briefly, post 1918 - there has to be chaos or best of all war. My point above - the Comintern ordered the KPD to abandon support for the SRs in Germany leading to the chancellorship offered to Hitler. Hitler was Stalin's gift to jump start war and the Spanish Civil War was the preliminary attempt that failed to suck everyone in.

      @@rusoviettovarich9221 I disagree. Communism, even under Stalin, was internationalist in its outlook., rather than nationalist. It presumed that once other countries saw the benefits of communism, they would eventually become communist themselves. The Soviet leadership had great hopes for a communist revolution in Germany at the end of WWI but it didn’t happen. That did not mean they did not continue to trade with Germany. In fact the Rapallo agreement of 1922 expanded that trade considerably and each became the others biggest trading partner and that remains so to this day.
      Stalin had a few territorial ambitions but they centred around regaining the territories lost at the end of WWI, notably eastern Poland. That ambition was realised with the Molotov Ribbentrop agreement in 1939.
      Any notion that Stalin was somehow plotting to start WWII early by becoming involved in Spain is simply not true. Unfortunately, the West has deluded itself again with large swathes of people choosing to believe Suvarov’s unsubstantiated claims of a Soviet mega tank army to take over all of Europe. It has no currency among any historians, whatever their personal bent. It certain fails to explain why Hitler was able to annex places like Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland unopposed and, in the case of Poland, with some connivance from Stalin.
      As far as the Spanish Civil War is concerned, Soviet aid to the republic was, in part, conditional. Stalin wanted to make sure the left wing parties in Spain were the same brand as he was in order that support be continued. This was shown in the oppression of libertarian socialist groups like the POUM, which Orwell was fighting for and left wing libertarian communist groups.

    I remember the British series "A Piece of Cake" where one of the pilots was an expatriate American who flew in the Spanish Civil War. For the most part the higher ups dislike his knowledge based on his experience but later it does seem to show through in his fighting. Granted in TV shows one does have to be careful regarding historical accuracy - the old saying never let the facts get in the way of a good story (something that irritates historians to no end), but after seeing this it does make sense that there would be opposition from the old school officers to a foreigner with experience different than their doctrines.

And only the Royal Navy actually conducted proper effective dive bomber training. Even as late as 1942 the 8th Army had 'stolen' 2 squadrons of Royal Navy Albacores because they were the only British A/C in theatre capable of dive bombing and accurately attacking Axis positions (Artillery supply dumps etc).
