I pitched a show via development meeting and ended up getting to direct an Adult Swim Small called The Puppeteer’s Assistant. I gave up on adultswim yesrs ago but damn man Xavier was truly a gift from the heavens this almost had that energy mixed eith some of those old sega saturn live action games we had in the 90s. I’m glad AS was accessible in Japan. I always wondered what the humor culture gap was like between what we are doing and what would be on TV there but it sounds like it’s appreciated.
@@harryfromends maybe tinkering with the insides of the show it could be special. Maybe some of that Sincerity found in Smiling Friends and Joe Perra Talks. The skeleton is outwardly malicious. Good vid. Lol, I remember when this came out. I thought it was funny enough, didn't hold a candle to Xavier: Renegade Angel, but I liked it. Nice music choices btw.
Thank you sir 💫 and I agree, I wouldn’t put it in the top tier of animation, but shows like this are brilliant for pushing boundaries and hopefully more comes of it in the future
Thank you very much! The dev meetings were full of brilliant and creative ideas, I wish Adult Swim would consider bringing back the dev series, even if just to find one gem!
I mean...if you think about it... We could very much see something like this again. I really liked the pilot, and on its own (visually), it vaguely resembles something made by PFFFR. Y'know. Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel, Superjail, and most recently, The Shivering Truth. Three of which were greenlit, produced and aired for [as]. PFFFR are very much affiliated with the channel and most of their projects get semi-regular rotation, albeit in the AM and commonly on Sundays. So, if [as] bought the premise (and whatever that might entail), and a studio that regularly pumps out material kind of like this to a degree, I could see something being developed in the future. But I know you won't get exactly what you found here. Good video, dawg. Subbed. (Edit: Superjail was under the PFFR umbrella, but Augenblick and Ian Miller were the ones who designed and animated it - so technically, that's from the online YT world, too, technically)
Firstly, thank you! And I would love Skeleton Realm to keep producing episodes of Skeleton Landlord, they have an incredible team and it would be awesome to see it get fleshed out!
Thank you for talking about this show! I watched it online and loved it. I was sad when i saw there wasnt anymore episodes Maybe we could see something in the future as it ages like fine wine.
I would love to see what they do with it for sure! I can imagine skeleton landlord in all sorts of weird visual environments trying to fill his ego with his next attempt at popularity
Doug and Sam are geniuses. Thank you for the little nod to Motel Hunters! I think their work is so intensely divisive because it’s just entirely unlike anything else right now, even among absurdist humor circles. I know a lot of comments say SL is trying to imitate Adult Swim cliche material, but I would argue that you should take a look at doug and sam’s other stuff to get a feel of the context it comes from. Great video❤
I’m just thrilled to have comments in the first place, it means so much to have people engaging with the content, I make my vids to create conversation & raise philosophical points so it’s brilliant to see people posting their own takes!
Skeleton landlord was awesome, but it'd also be great to link to Skeleton Realm in the description or something considering they are still creating great content!
Like something you would see playing on a TV in World Peace 2. Although that would be a cheap and boring joke that would make the entire scene awful and unfunny. Too much focus on an element that holds no weight to the show overall. Great video man.
I’ve never had the time or resources to delve into what fever dreams of a show I’ve stumbled upon over the years as I could never figure out what it was I was looking at, but once as a kid I woke up in the middle of the night to what I thought was an adult swim commercial still. It turns out it was a show based or surreal art (almost like an early AI project looking back) and everything was sweet at first, the chemicals from waking mid REM made it almost feel like a “trip,” so I struggled keeping my eyes awake to continue watching the ever-changing stills that had clouds/grass/animals with a nice elevator music theme (it’s complicated to explain like I said lol) and ALL OF A SUDDEN- AS QUICK AS YOU CAN BLINK, THE VIBE SHIFTS AND IT BECOMES NIGHTMARE FUELED HORROR SLIDES! I didn’t take any drugs as a kid but as a kid, I knew what it was for a “trip” to go bad😭 I couldn’t do anything but shut my eyes and try to erase the mindfvck created and that was my LAST TIME thinking watching adult swim after randomly was the move😂😭💯
sounds like it could be "off the air" it's a series of shorts by different animators/creators based around a different theme every episode, very tangential and trippy
Very cool. I strongly believe more absurdist content needs to be made, you said it yourself. We need to make flawed diamonds, media that takes advantage of all the bizarre potential the art mediums such as animation provide. Stay classy.
I hear you, and I'm watching the video. But goddamn did you have to put so many banger songs in the background? LMFAOAO great video! Always had the mindset that "Its entertainment" someone made this for someone out there to enjoy, no matter how subjectively bad it is, you never know how impactful a piece of media will have on your life.
There’s a lot of comments talking about how other shows are “Too Adult Swim” for Adult Swim, which I love, because it’s interesting to see everyone’s opinions
Thank you for showing me the creators have a channel I had no idea! I showed Skeleton Landlord to my kid and they ask me every few months if its been made into a series yet lol. I'm also disappointed it wasnt i love this style kind of cruelty squad/xavier mixed with a 90s fmv game idk. Zim zam (?) And the smalls with the shrimp guy are also favorites lol.
Joe Pera might not be on AS anymore, but he's been touring doing live comedy shows. He just put out a special recently. If you watch it I hope you enjoy it
I wish adult swim would take more risk, hell one of my favorite adult swim moment was brady neelys scorpio peeopo and LOTS of people hated it, but watching it in my early teens high as hell with my friends was one of the funniest greatest moments, that's what adult swim did best- i miss going to adult swim and finding a brand new insane beautiful work
That was the beauty of adult swim, they’d green light some incredibly experimental programs and people would either love them or hate them - but the ones that loved them, that show would stick with them forever
Adult Swim is a husk of it's former self. If you didn't see the oldschool Adult Swim you haven't really seen Adult Swim. It ought to be called "weeb corner and re-runs" cuz that's all it is now.
@@harryfromends Well the old adult swim was still back before all art was subjected to the modern sensibilities stranglehold we're stuck in now. Adult Swim wasn't just a name, it earned it's reputation because it was not appropriate for children!! Even overgrown children like those that run it now!! The unique shows of old A.S. didn't used to feel at all like "TV content," something mass produced to be inoffensive for general audiences. That's why it used to be great!!! The shows took bold chances, they were edgy, raunchy, wild and unrestrained!! Anything could happen!! As you watched these shows you got an overwhelming sense that they clearly weren't made to please the average general audience, and that depth of connection made it something truly special and amazing to watch. That "general audience" just didn't get it and moved on, so if you found you were one of the weirdos who enjoyed that sorta stuff, you found yourself amongst only like-minded individuals. A.S. used to be like a cool secret club in that sense. When I first started watching, it began with an hour of King of the Hill, followed by an hour of Family Guy. If you stayed up past that then the really good stuff started! Aqua Teens, Squidbillies, Children's Hospital, Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, Robot Chicken, etc. So many more classics I can't remember the titles of off the top of my head. I remember seeing skeleton landlord on there at some point! Btw I know there's always been the anime aspect of A.S. too, but that used to be just one component of it, with plenty more to A.S. if that wasn't your thing. Now airing anime on the weekends has become the network's entire identity! They now air next to NONE of the classic shows unique to only their archives, occasionally we get a little Robot Chicken, Aqua Teens, and sometimes some Your Pretty Face, but even then those showings are increasingly rare, few and far between, sandwiched in-between reruns of the same basic adult shows everyone's already seen 1000X before!! Nobody wanted more re-runs of Futurama, or Bob's Burgers, or American Dad, the same episodes of the same shows we've already seen before and could see again if we wanted on a dozen other channels! You can tell the staff that's working there now has an entirely different attitude towards the channel than their predecessors. You can tell they're the kind of people that have spent more time on the internet getting offended rather than trolling and shitposting. They have no desire to maintain what used to be the channel for edgelords. They're scared to take any real chances, they're afraid of "offending people." They just want to watch their animes and spew leftist politics, like most people these days. That's the new target audience for Adult Swim, the channel that used to have no target audience! It was just people united under weirdness and insane fun mayhem!! It's a shame what it's become, but what a ride it was for those who got to experience it! I'm glad I did! Sorry for typing all this, lol!
They lost me when they dropped On Cinema, now behind a paywall. And then when Warner merged with Discovery, they wrote off shows like Final Space. It gives me the ick.
i would have loved to watched this show. it gives off the old adult swim vibes. different/weird but in a good, nostalgic, tune in tune out kind of way. now it’s a lot of shows with plots (which is cool) but adult swim was made for the late nighters, stoners, etc. loved the video! thanks for sharing this was cool!
Definitely some inspiration taken, and perhaps the boys at Skeleton Realm thought by making it more coherent (as well as pop culture references) they could capture a wider audience
All this weird new crap on adult swim will never beat 12 oz mouse, home movies, tim and erics awesome show great job, check it out with steve brule etc.
Thanks for putting me on to this, it's super cool. Adult swim be having cool pilots they don't pick up. Some other interesting show pilots to check out that are totally unique and weird like this is "Did She Died?" By Ayesha Erotica & "Sapphic Mermaids" by 546 Giraffes Network
We could all learn a thing or two from Skeleton, never stop screaming into the void that is making art, one day your creation may be special to someone :)
The Skeleton Realm boys are incredibly talented and I’ve kept up with their content ever since Skeleton Landlord! I’d love to see Adult Swim give Skeleton Landlord a chance at a full season!
morbid. but on the news years ago. the news in my area showed security footage from a school bus crash. all the kids were fine. the camera is completely still like that. but the kids are bouncing from the bumps in the road and then all of a sudden they fly to one side. and are stuck to the wall. freaking hilarious. and i dont feel bad for laughing because i was a kid who rode the bus at that time lol. this was around 2007ish @@harryfromends

@harryfromends Most definitely, I feel like they actually fit the video perfectly, especially if you change up the lyrics a little bit Adult Swim should 'Say Yes' to a full series lol Or better yet, "whatcha gonna do when the landlord comes for you?" 😅
I’ve been watching the Adult Swims Smalls on their UA-cam channel, and there’s still so much creativity being uploaded - however I don’t understand why the company won’t take any risks to put those shows on the actual channel. It’s a shame to see that while they do a good job giving creators a platform, that platform is still a bit buried. Its surprising that Skeleton Landlord didn’t “make it.” A divisive show is usually a good sign of something engaging. Its not exactly the same, but the comedic tone reminds me of Metalocalypse. Fantastic video!
I agree! Adult swim should absolutely take more risks with their programming and give some of the creators who make smalls an actual show, I think it would set a very important precedent
Very true! It’s incredibly hard to predict just how well Skeleton Landlord would do viewing numbers wise, but it would be great to see them release a season on adult swim and go from there
the visuals look like 4 decades of animation software to me, 80s 90s 00s and the 2010s plus bowling alley strike animations. so this is what happens when you make a peak 4AM show for Adult swim and you should all remember this majestic feeling peeps

@@harryfromends legit it would be great, it's like xavier renegade angel and bowling alley animations had a baby and it's only active at 4AM. I'd watch it hands down if I could

Looks pretty like fun! I'm going to check it out. Anybody know what software the cheesy computer graphic characters and sets would be made in? Not just after effects, right?

But yeah they sent me 200 dollars - I followed up with other folks who worked there, and while development meeting wasn’t the thing that got me in the door, it was a good jumping off point. You know, I could open the email with “hey, I got the prize on this episode of development meeting; here’s some ideas I have”
I gave up on adultswim yesrs ago but damn man Xavier was truly a gift from the heavens this almost had that energy mixed eith some of those old sega saturn live action games we had in the 90s.
Anyway glad I stumbled upon this. I libe in Japan so we were kovked down within the country but at least everything here in Kansai was still live so i never got into the dig myself in a whole kode and watch all those Livestream things everybody was doing on line so that was news to me but damn only 500 bucks for the contest and ten k for a whole show is crazy to me i spend about that in a month just having fun.
It’s honestly peanuts considering how much adult swim stands to gain, but they understand that people are desperate to pitch as well
I’m glad AS was accessible in Japan. I always wondered what the humor culture gap was like between what we are doing and what would be on TV there but it sounds like it’s appreciated.
they actually had an idea for a second episode and actually pitched it live onstream but the development meeting people seemed a little tepid on it
I think they just need some fresh ideas, because ultimately Adult Swim bought the premise, rather than the substance
@@harryfromends maybe tinkering with the insides of the show it could be special. Maybe some of that Sincerity found in Smiling Friends and Joe Perra Talks. The skeleton is outwardly malicious. Maybe him truly trying to connect with people and it going terribly wrong ending with him burying bodies would have worked better. He's just malicious in his intent.
Skeleton Landlord has some Xavier Renegade Angel vibes with the randomness and animation
Definitely a very random show ahah and for sure they took some inspiration
Never heard of this show, and this is my first time coming across your channel, but this Sade's Paradise instrumental has earned you a new follower!
Incredible song, and very fitting for the video!
Just watch Skeleton Realm Live every Wednesday. Doug and Sam are creating brilliant absurdist comedy/art literally every week
I’ve kept up with their content, but I’d love to see Adult Swim give Skeleton Landlord a full season to see how they can progress the storyline
@@harryfromendsfor sure 😊
They are the most underrated people on the planet
@@harryfromends lmaoo it's ma'aaaam, jk. But I agree.
I really like the sentiment of making impactful stuff even if it doesn't achieve massive succeess. Keep up the great work harry!
I really hope a full season gets made, the boys at Skeleton Realm would definitely make the improvements needed to the show!
i would love to see a full series on this
I would love to see what they do with it for sure!
Great video❤
love how you reply and interact with so many comments. great video man
I’m just thrilled to have comments in the first place, it means so much to have people engaging with the content, I make my vids to create conversation & raise philosophical points so it’s brilliant to see people posting their own takes!
Moral Orel got canceled after making an episode too adult for Adult Swim.
Yeah it’s quite ironic that Adult Swim cancelled a show for “getting quite depressing”
Especially after the Adult Swim execs asked for the show to become darker.
Skeleton landlord was awesome, but it'd also be great to link to Skeleton Realm in the description or something considering they are still creating great content!
Great point, I’m going to post Skeleton Realm on Instagram as well!

Oh now you HAVE to talk about Xavier: Renegade Angel. Super similar vibes and style. Aired on Adult Swim for 2 seasons.
XRE definitely deserves a video, and a lot of Skeleton Landlord is inspired by Xavier
I love how the very end feels like an adult swim reel in-between the commercials and shows
Very true! Skeleton actually ran as infomercials for a brief period as well

Probably the best comparison I’ve heard thus far
Like something you would see playing on a TV in World Peace 2. Although that would be a cheap and boring joke that would make the entire scene awful and unfunny.
Too much focus on an element that holds no weight to the show overall.
Great video man.
Thank you my man, and ahah it’s fine I’m not judging

Certainly did! A great development pitch ❤️
This sounds like a very 3am adult swim type meme in real life ahah must’ve been a weird night
@@harryfromends brother! I had a literal heart attack damn near!!😂😭😭
sounds like it could be "off the air" it's a series of shorts by different animators/creators based around a different theme every episode, very tangential and trippy
WE LOVE SKELETON REALM LIVE
We pump it with steeze and bust with ease
WOOOOO
Very cool. I strongly believe more absurdist content needs to be made, you said it yourself. We need to make flawed diamonds, media that takes advantage of all the bizarre potential the art mediums such as animation provide. Stay classy.
Stay classy indeed 🙌🏻 And 100% if there’s more chances taken, I.E., Skeleton Landlord, then ultimately more gems will be made in the process
Ahahah I feel like the music is 90% of a vid, I love having the soundtrack also tell a bit of a story
Man, that title attracted a lot of fans of the notsee-saluting, reporter threatening weird beird guy
There’s a lot of comments talking about how other shows are “Too Adult Swim” for Adult Swim, which I love, because it’s interesting to see everyone’s opinions
Cringe
Thank you for showing me the creators have a channel I had no idea! I showed Skeleton Landlord to my kid and they ask me every few months if its been made into a series yet lol. I'm also disappointed it wasnt i love this style kind of cruelty squad/xavier mixed with a 90s fmv game idk.
Zim zam (?) And the smalls with the shrimp guy are also favorites lol.
That’s so sweet, hopefully one day your kids will see Skeleton Landlord as a fully fledged Adult Swim show!

Rentoids couldn't handle the landchad style
Landchad is such an incredible name for Skelly
Nothing will ever top Xavier: Renegade Angel in dark/absurdist comedy. That show was on a whole other level that could never be reached.
The amount of XRA comments shows how powerful the show truly is

Adult Swim is a husk of it's former self. If you didn't see the oldschool Adult Swim you haven't really seen Adult Swim. It ought to be called "weeb corner and re-runs" cuz that's all it is now.
I agree, but interested to get your perspective on why?
Im so glad i found this channel today you are gonna blow up 🙏

My pleasure! And I agree, definitely need to see more of what made adult swim in the first place, unadulterated nonsense!
It's like an Adult Swim parody of an average Adult Swim show
It really does feel like that at certain times, especially with the horse eating the ice cream scene & some of the graphics on Skeleton’s computer
Not sure when it started but Dev meeting was around a lot longer on the Adult Swim website, the youtube stuff happened much later.

Fantastic video!

the visuals look like 4 decades of animation software to me, 80s 90s 00s and the 2010s plus bowling alley strike animations. so this is what happens when you make a peak 4AM show for Adult swim and you should all remember this majestic feeling peeps
This is a great way to put it, it really is a mesh up of all of the decades of animation, with references done almost as a homage at certain points, I love the show and I hope Adult Swim gives Skeleton Landlord a chance
@@harryfromends legit it would be great, it's like xavier renegade angel and bowling alley animations had a baby and it's only active at 4AM. I'd watch it hands down if I could
