- Manitoba First Nation Elder Dave Courchene explains the origins and lessons of the First Nation Seven Teachings. The lessons of the Bear Spirit (Courage), the Beaver Spirit (Wisdom), the Eagle Spirit (Love), the Buffalo Spirit (Respect), the Sasquatch Spirit (Honesty), the Wolf Spirit (Humility) and the Turtle Spirit (Truth) are all retold in this 11 minute video in both English and Ojibway. At Sagkeeng Child and Family Services (in Sagkeeng First Nation and Winnipeg, Manitoba) we support and empower our families and community. Services we provide include workshops in parenting, traditional skills like making star blankets, moccasins, hand drums, ribbon shirts and harvesting wild rice. Learn more at www.sagkeengcfs.org
Everyone living in Anishinaabe territory should learn this in school, it's timeless wisdom that people of all backgrounds would benefit from.
Preserve your language on video and write it down before no one speaks it anymore
That's why so many people feel so empty... I think this should be taught EVERYWHERE
All Americans should be forced to learn this
Canadians and American @riseuplight
I agree , in the 80’s we learned many anishnabe things . The first song we sang was Annie couhouni , and the first instrument was the flute and they told us it was a native instrument . We was sitting in a cercle . All the teaching was based on native ways. My school was on the ancestral territory of kitigan zibi . It is still an anishnabe territory because it was unceded . I was raised of reserve but beside the river where our ancestors lived before the government created those reserves. My dad never liked the idea of reserves because at first it was like a jail . But I have family on my mom side and my dad side who are on reserve .
My grandfather is ojibwe. He never talked about it..but he did teach me these 7 teachings, although he didnt tell me they were ojibwe teachings.
Now as an adult(31) i realise this is how i live.. Over 20yrs ago a seed was planted, only now it begains to sprout.
Seen Thedog .........my father taught my sister and I these 7 teachings. Whenever we went camping he would cleanse himself with the smoke. I am Ojibway and proud. I am 68.
Maybe only your understanding of these seeds has begun to sprout. It sounds as if you've lived by these teachings, either conciously or otherwise, for most of your life. That is a truly beautiful thing, and I'm so very happy for you to have that sort of guidance in your life. Peace be with you, and may life shine blessings upon you for all your days.

It is for the Elders and Parents to teach the children while they are young and capible of learning.
I’m native and I’m teaching my children all I am learning myself from spirit. I wish I knew my tribal heritage tho. I’m white earth reservation member but live far and no nobody from my “family”. I am learning all free m spirit and UA-cam only.
Mandy Ice they are

Younger generation here, connecting with my past and trying to carry it forward to the next. KBIC Ojibwe.
RESPECT, LOVE, COURAGE, HONESTY, WISDOM, HUMILITY, TRUTH.
In today’s world, this teaching is critically needed!
So sad to see it not being shared today.
*This is the Way.*
I have no Indigenous Blood, but I am very grateful to you for sharing these teachings. The Western ways I was conditioned in are mostly poisonous. Thank you and blessings to all ❤️
Chi-miigwetch. The seven fire prophecy says all man can benefit from the ways, not just the Indian or those with brown skin.
Am half filipino and these teachings are amzing.
It's RepubliCONs and Capitalism that Block this
That beaver teaching is very powerful. I've spent my whole life trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do, why I'm here, what's my purpose. And the longer I search, not doing anything with myself, the older, and sicker, and more tired I get every year. Someday, I hope to figure it out, and have everything fall perfectly into place. No more doubts. No more confusion. No more indecision. Just know who I am and why I am, and go do it.
The answer who you are is inside your heart, a cosmic code which is memorised there. You only need to read it and be happy with yourself, whatever you do and wherever you go, just feel happy inside your heart.
Sometimes you must go all the way to the bottom to find the truth of your being here. As westerners we are trained to ignore our heart to submit to society's twisted ways. This training is difficult to shed, and the teaching of humility brings us to a place where we can accept That Which is Greater Than Ourselves, and it becomes clear how we are to serve That.
I spent much of my life trying to find this thing, and feeling that I was wasting my time. Things began to turn around for when I made a decision with my whole heart, that I was really going to look for love, and not care about about society or how I was percieved. From this, I believe, i met a person who became my teacher, and who embodied the qualities of honesty and truth. This person helped my find my gift, and supported me while I grew it. So maybe you can get help, like I did. For me it began with a commitment in my heart to truth and reality over what I thought other people wanted to see from me. Listen to your heart.
I wept at that teaching...even though I honour it every morning...I finally understood
Listen to your eagle. Learn to listen from your heart. Get out of your mind.
When I worked in a nursing i was having trouble with a supervisor. I kept having these dreams about a Black bear with a blue cape on the stairs going up to the 3rd floor. At first i was scared to pass the bear but eventually I had the courage to run up those stairs and that bear just looked at me and walked away. I always thought it was my gardian angel but now it all makes sense. I ended up getting offered a job on the 3rd floor. SO BEAUTIFUL Thank you xo
also i found out my great grandmother was Ojibwe
these teachings are universal. you dont have to identify with any cultural group to have them inside you, and they are not exclusively owned by any group. humility means seeing our connection and relatedness as one human family. its wonderful to hear these teachings expressed in cultures around the world. they are the universal gift of Spirit to all people.
Every children of Earth should learn and grow in this school... As each children of Earth should be born and grow in Love and Light... As Earth is our Mother *
Wise teachings that are respectfully relevant to non-Anisinabek people as well...lessons for all.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Its needed now more than ever in this time when humanity has oceans of knowledge & barely a drop of wisdom.
Bless the Creator for guiding me here

I say chi miigwech for sharing these sacred teachings for all of us to hear.
May I be again tomorrow be born into your spirit!
The start of this video really hit me when you talked about elders having a role in society as Anishinaabe people. "whenever prayers are done- prayers are always done to invoke the spirit and the grandfathers that come within our presnence to be around us to guide us to teach us to protect us" My grandfather was those things for me. He was my protector and he has passed on so from time to time I feel lost. Thank you for reminding me who I am and who I have on my side.
Most people do not no that unlike other peoples we have blood memory. Our ancestors sing in our blood you just have to remember how to listen to them. Get away from electric.
@@aaronspencer8800 Are you sure? "unlike other peoples"? I would be careful about trying to elevate yourselves over other humans. Be humble and kind. You can not insult my grandfather, he was a wise man and he had blood in his veins. Just because he had German blood you think he is inferior. You only speak for yourself. You represent nothing other than your own racist opinion.
I have Jesus on my side, and the Holy Spirit. If you can not see humans as brethren, then you will perish. Your grandfather is no better than mind and your blood has no more memory than mine. But you are lacking. You are flawed... Stop insulting my grandfather please, you racist.
@@voidremoved are you high ? I never said anything about your grandfather. I said since we are on our home land and our culture goes back to before colonialism. Some of US indigenous peoples still have blood memory. And it may be the same for your grandfather in Germany. Idk I'm not from there I can only go off of my own experiences and the experiences of my ancestors. And I honestly don't care who gets butt hurt because I'm proud of who I am and where I come from. So go after your own people for destroying this place. We were here for hundreds of years and did less damage to the land then your people have in 10 . We are just waiting for you all to kill yourselfs out 😁🙋🏽♂️

I'm Ojibwe and Tlingit. I've grown up in my Tlingit culture and I know it. And those teachings.

Or Miigwetch? you can start with that instead of other languages that have no business with us LOL whatever floats your boat though i guess
Our spiritual understanding is so far behind our technological understanding. It's our downfall. I have noticed a great awakening to the spiritual. Just hope it's not too late.
Preserve your language on video and write it down before no one speaks it anymore
Never too late, Great Spirit be with you
I noticed that the giants are waking.
@@green-eyedchild6689 They never sleep, but are constantly and vigilantly serving the Almighty, but we rarely see them, for it is we who are asleep. However, they are awakening to their new task, which is to hep men avert the disastrous consequences of their karma, namely the destruction of themselves and the earth. Blessed Be!
You are right to be concerned, but one last prophecy and legacy was left to men for their Salvation, the Holy Spirit Incarnate. Now His Star encircles the earth and releases all the karma of men, so under suffering they may awaken to their one true purpose, to serve the Almighty Father in the strictest humility and obedience. Let us pray for this success, for the existence of man and earth hangs by the tenderst of light threads, which we must strengthen by making our every breath and lives a prayer to the Great Spirit. So that when the Star materialises, we may greet it as a help, rather than the harbinger of doom and destruction, for our fate still lies in our hands...just!
I'm 17.7% Chippewa Ojibwe found out through my half sister its from my Father's Great Grandmothers heritage. And being adopted I was able to reconnect to my half sister after I was adopted I have been trying desperately to find the truth of who my ancestors were. It thanks to not giving up, though I am adopted into a family, one not of my ancestory culture they support me and learn morr about my heritage. Sadly I do not have anyone but my half sister and sister that could give me the answer to my Native heritage once I was able to relocate them. I was teased in school for not looking like my adopted parents, I had no connection to my heritage identity and felt out of place. But now, now even if its only a small percent I can be proud to say who I am, and that I want to learn more about my heritage.
Much love brothers and sisters. Peace to all of you !
Everyone was given a gift and you need to use your gift!
im glad my child goes to school with her own people , they get taught this and their own language on a daily basis
Thanks so much. I am 1/8 Ojibway but so disconnected from my heritage. Im gratefl to come to learn. Our history was always mentioned casually in my family but after my father passed he came to me in a dream. I gave my brother his message which lead to a very interesting conversation since he has studied our family history a bit. I've only learned of my heritage recently but I feel like I am being re-called and lead to reconnect. Thank you!
+TheSunshineSpot Awesome to hear :) about learning the old ways. Sorry for your loss, but so glad to hear he connected with you from the other side. I have experienced this many times with family and friends. Beautiful gift to experience it.
I am 25% blood of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa out of Belcourt, ND, an offshoot of the Ojibwe nations. I was never fortunate enough to truly learn from the teachings of my people, but I nonetheless feel a very strong connection to them. The native people of these lands were so very wise with their approach to living. I'm truly grateful and happy that these teachings are still being passed down. I commend any and all of the individuals still keeping these traditions alive.

Love how throws in our language and thank you for this ❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏♋
According to genetics I am only a 1/16 but I am drawn to these teachings. Thank you for posting this
So what you're one 16th? Like it is a matter of genetics alone. Colour etc does not make who you are in your heart. What your soul is is something beyond the body in the end, anyways. Just treasure that love inside of you, that you feel for all people and all beings.
I have been wrestling much of my life with my genetic make-up. I'm Finnish, Ukrainian, French and Lakota.. Possibly many more things.. I have felt so often, due to history and due to my fathers attitude and people's shallow judgement based on appearence, like I was not allowed to feel that part of me that is Native American. Now I say, to heck with that! I am all of the above and spirit first and for-most. I love and try my best to be a good human being. And like that, I have found peace. I don't need anyones permission to feel what I feel or to be who I am except that of the great spirit that made me and all of us!. Much love to you

@@josefdettwyler9809 Great! God/ the Great spirit knows who you are.. It made you just the way you are, uniquely to be that exact thing/ beeing that you are. You are exactly where you need to be on your soul-path at this point in time, even if it doesn't seem so at the moment maybe.
Each "mistake" we made was neccassary for our growth and developement, to become who we will be a long time from now. What you are fits perfectly into the great quilt of existance that he/ she envisioned and is for ever weaving. You are that unique thread/ patch of fabric that only you can be, uniquely in your position keeping everything together. Even when things seem to be falling apart, it's just a re-assembly on the whole. It loves all of our perfect imperfections, it made us that way for a reason. And it is perfect, in this way, we all are perfect even when we are not on the surface. Wish you well, Much love to you ngak :)

Loved watching this. It was an honor to witness such a beautiful culture and spirituality. It should be learned by all.
Miigwetch for this opportunity to connect and learn more about my culture.
True traditions and wisdom never die. I'm happy to see a re-emergence of your native faith and tribal identity. We, european, have been torn apart so much by the desert religion (christianity) that we've have lost our core identity and our tribal allegiance...but it's changing now too. We are becoming more aware of the old ways, the gods of our forefathers, our ancestors history and our sacred teachings. Glory and strenght to your people and may the Ojibways live forever!

A lawyer told me i was too honest and it was causing me problems lol . I don't care i stay honest . I will be rewarded one day for my honesty ❤ migwetch ❤
Thank you
just Beautiful
I love the teaching of honesty, speaking from the heart. Thank you for making these teachings public. I'm gonna write down some ideas I got from this teaching number 4. The idea of paper agreements, contracts, etc. are all for things that are impersonal, when money becomes the basis of relationships. It creates a transactional, impersonal society and a culture of appearances rather than substance where people are definitely going to be unfulfilled. It's when people are forced to act not in their own interests but ruled over by a group of people exploiting them for their own benefit you get people forced into specific roles in a structure not of their own making that they don't have control over and then are forced to carry out the duties of those roles regardless of their own desires, regardless of what's in their hearts. Then you get the conditioning to follow orders and confusion about purpose in life and the dependence on the dominant structures or ruling class for a worldview and direction, e.g. patriotism. Just some thoughts inspired by this video.
Thank You, for sharing this teaching 🐢

First Nation Elder Dave Courchene is a very wise man, and I am so glad that I found this video. I have searched for videos of Anishinaabe traditions for years. I don't know why that subject has been so elusive since this was made in 2014. 6 years ago. I guess is that it had to reach a certain # of likes before it was in the machine. Anyway.
