Why Cain Builds a City • The City Ep. 2

  • In the story of the Bible, cities are a bad thing. They’re a symptom of humanity’s violence and attempts to protect themselves instead of trusting God. In fact, in the second chapter of Genesis, God “builds” something for humanity’s protection. And it’s not a city-it’s a woman. In this episode, Tim and Jon explore the theme of the city and the first thing God builds.

Also... Didn't God say that Cain would not have a home? That he would be a wanderer? So was that more of a command or God telling Him what He wanted him to do as opposed to God giving Cain a prophecy of His life? So Cain essentially disobeyed God by building the city? I also can't help but connect that back to Eve and Adam eating of the tree. In my opinion I see it not that God didn't want Adam and Eve to have knowledge but that He wanted to provide the knowledge in time. As God saw fit to what we could handle. Knowledge without wisdom can be dangerous. So rather then us waiting to obtain this knowledge from God, we decided to take it for ourselves. It does seem to all come back to wanting to play God. Wanting to decide for ourselves what is good and what is bad. That is the main reason I believe we have turned away from God so much. We want to do what we want to do. Most people would rather believe there is no God than to face that there are consequences for our actions.

I remember 30 years ago when my pastor Duane Epler (RIP) first spoke of Cain, building a city in direct opposition to God telling him to wander and rely on Him alone. At the time I was blown away because I had been studying geography with a particular emphasis on the evolution of gardens and what gardens tell us about the world view of the builders....Neo-classical gardens = man in control of his environment, Japanese gardens = the transitory nature of life, cottage gardens = a call back to our mythic past where we were "one with nature." This is great teaching that God has obviously restored for his people! We wait "for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God." (Hebrews 11:10)

This is the verse that keeps floating around in my head while listening to this. Lot chose the man-made city, Abraham was waiting for the God promised, God made city. Abraham is a pattern for us to follow, in faith.
    Hebrews 11:10
For he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

This is crazy. I was crying out to God about a year ago and He answered me. He told me many things, but the thing that stood out was when He said “this is what I “built” you for.” At the time I thought the word “built” was strange, but that’s what He said. Now I understand! God is amazing ❤️

      *** BREAKING NEWS ***
Now Confirmed - Jesus was the first TRANS! The first truly 'zero-brained' human to exist.
And Jesus said unto the crowd: "Behold, cut off my pecker - for I am WOMAN" and so it was. Jesus was a woman. And all remaining Theists identified as deluded, brainless, useless, worthless, unintelligent, ignorant twats.

Amen. This world has grown so dark. Thank you Jesus for never leaving my side because everyone else has! Jesus! I PRAISE you! Even as I’m struggling providing for my children. I feel like a failure but I will keep faith in God. Prayers are all I need. Since covid I can’t seem to get back on my feet. I lost my job for declining the vaccine. I declined due to my health conditions. I suffer from lupus, and heart disease. I’m now waitressing and so thankful to be working but I’m not making nearly enough to get by. I have two beautiful boys both are autistic. I’m overwhelmed because they require so much from me. I started homeschooling them because they were having so many issues with bullying. I feel so alone. Every month is a struggle to not end up on the streets with my boys. I’m struggling buying groceries I’m so discouraged. Jesus hear my cries I’m so tired. But I have faith! I WILL NOT FEAR! I know God will continue to provide for me and my children. So I praise you Jesus! And thank you in advance! ❤

I rarely listen to podcasts: they're generally poorly organized and boring. But you have an extraordinary one: well-organized and full of new Biblical insights.
I knew Hebrew was full of puns. I'm currently teaching myself Hebrew by writing out the book of Psalms and I see the visual puns you mention, as well as the audible type. Your insights on 'helper' and 'city' and build are great. I also wrote out Genesis 1-3 in Hebrew and saw the word translated 'rib' is much more ambiguous.

I suddenly received the image of Cain being sent out from Eden with a sign from God and the first thing he does is build a city to protect himself. Different than with Adam in which God builds a woman for him as his first line of defense. Like father, like son, both were quick to discharge responsibility after God questions them. The difference being God have Cain a sign or a feeling that led him to create something for his own defense in which he could blame no one for its weaknesses but himself.

This gives a beautiful insight into the book of Jude.. how men are going in the "way of Cain" that is solely total independence on God; to make his own Salvation..
I've also been thinking through about the church (feminine) being the bride of Christ(the husband and the head).. and Ephesians states that the church is being built, for both (Christ and the Church to become "a perfect man")..
    This is just so explosive🔥🔥🙏

In Biblical literature, the chronological series of an event is just as important as the event itself. The the fact that Cain has a son before he builds a city leads me to believe that the city was to protect his son as much as it was to protect him. Almost defiant in that Cain doesn’t pray for God to protect the son, but he will take on that role himself

After listening to the cities series, I had the revelation that the reason some cults seem so appealing for some families, is that they are searching for safe shelter to keep kids and themselves away from dangers, even though they literally walk themselves into harms way.
My parents did extreme parenting. Was in a Mormon WWASP facility from the age 16-18. Not by choice. But my parents did it to protect me.
Even if it did do some harm. We live in a world that’s hard to know who to trust or where to turn. Even if we think we are abiding, there are so many bad things disguised as good in the name of faith or religion.

This Ep was so incredibly dynamic and interesting. Cain built for himself a walled city in place of trusting the LORD to protect him knowing he deserved no protection. This is a pretty good take away. Now contrasting Nehemiah doing exactly the same thing Cain did by rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem looking over his shoulder with a towel in one hand and a sword in the other and commissioned by a foreign government to do so while in exile. So What is the difference aside from Nehemiah not spilling his brothers' blood? Is it that Nehemiah is a kind of reverse or inverse of Cain, by rebuilding the city walls for the gathering back in to the nation of Israel all who recognized the place God covenanted with Abraham that ultimately culminate in the incarnation of Jesus Christ and the fulfillment of all the prophets in the Shedding of Christ Blood? I think there is a deep well here.

I got that God is not into rebelliousness. He hates it. We will self-destruct if we have a rebellious attitude about any part of our lives. Emotion is natural, but we take it to the Lord and figure it out His way, Biblically. Then we are on sound ground. We surrender to His will, find harmony and peace, and are blessed. If i get angry about something, i know i am in trouble and better get to praying. I have instant anger! I can carry on like no one i know, but it blows over, and i go to the Lord with it. He ends up getting the opposite reaction, and i see things much differently. My righteous indignation was wrong. It seems right, the whole world would even agree, but if God doesn't, it is rebellion. I honestly cannot remember many times that i was right from His perspective. The things i was right about, He taught me a better way to see it so it did not destroy me or my walk with Him. He will handle injustice through correct channels or in His own way and time. Nothing is worth losing our walk in peace with Him.

I once read someone (I think it was either Martin Luther or one of the Church Fathers) make the connection between God "building" Eve from Adam and the words from Matthew 16 "on this rock I will *build* my church." The same connection also would then apply to how Eve was taken from Adam's side, and the Church was, in a sense, taken from the side of the second Adam, when His side was pierced on the cross.
This would then also tie into your argument about the eschatological city. I was actually expecting you to bring it up when you mentioned Eve being "built."

She's the least helpful creation of God. Land animals were made before her and would have contributed to Adam's livelihood and acted as a far greater, mutually beneficial, and healthy partner than Eve.

In this place was no rain, however STREAMS came up from that area of the earth and watered the entire surface of that Ground. .. Enteresting Riddle teaming with clues. Adam wasnt firm yet so he was sent back to labor or strife until he became firm or sure or certain (Si Eve or Sieve). Doubtless with God. Water + Earth = Firmness (Jesus + Man = Rock Solid).

QUESTION: Did everyone have access to the garden and everyone lost access to the tree of life (the cheruvim guarded the tree of life - doesn't say the garden) but were still in YHWH's presence? Thinking this because it says Cain left YHWH's presence which would imply where Adam and Eve were was still in YHWH's presence. Based on translations, it almost looks like Cain chose to leave not that YHWH expelled him? If that is the case, does that mean other's chose to leave YHWH's presence before all this and those were the people who concerned Cain? Is it possible there were walls around Eden making it a city that people could only come and go from when YHWH allowed - thus matching it to the city in Revelation? What does the original text tell us in this regard?
Great info - thank you - got me thinking for sure!

I would like to point out that walls are also spiritual, where they represent law. Literal walls were useful in ancient times, before cannon was invented. You could keep out barbarian raiders and bandits with literal walls. In modern times of artillery, literal city walls have disappeared, but not the law. The law is the spiritual representation of the city wall.

The hardest thing to wrap my head around is if Cain and Abel were the first four humans on the planet why would Cain be worried about being killed after being banished even further east then his parents. Wouldn't those people be his brothers and sisters and why would they already be out there it gets very difficult to understand and then in turn explain to someone who question the authority of scripture, help‼️‼️

    Ow this was really good!
God gave Adam eve who was like water to a field (natural Allie’s) the Allie is corrupted and so good gives them skin to clothe their embarrassment God doesn’t make them clothe themselves they’re free to be unclothed but their guilt burdens them so Clothes give them a sense of peace….. time passes and Adam and his family are near Eden but aren’t in Eden Cain kills able and God tells him to leave his family, Cain is alone in the wilderness (essentially naked in the world with no skin to protect him) God tells him he’ll keep him safe the sign will naturally keep him alive perhaps even from wild beasts….. but Cain feels unsafe so he builds walls around himself and his family and new people join him and protect him (Cain provides his own protection making him like God) but unlike Gods sigh that will naturally keep him safe the city only protects him and his tribe other city’s (tribes nations etc) will see him as a stranger (what he feared from wandering) and he will be unsafe ultimately the sigh (in which required nothing like Adam and Eve when they were naked and exposed to the world) is inadequate protection and causes further problems (the same for humanity clothing ourself’s as it doesn’t prevent lust and unlike Eden were our skin was never in danger clothing/armor is ineffective protection compared to what we had in Eden) ultimately genesis starting from Adam to Cain is a story of how Gods natural way leads to inherent success with no complications but how human desire to make the world more complex with our own solutions ultimately leads to small problems that grow in scale until God himself corrects the mistake. In this case God will take Eve and the City (the source of all life and the ability to protect and sustain that life) humanity’s first mistakes and turn them into New Jerusalem! He will have walls for that city but unlike Caine walls which he hid behind to feel safe God will decorate the wall as a beautiful sigh to make people come to the city!

After killing Abel, a curse was placed upon Cain, and he responded to the Lord “...whoever finds me will kill me” (Gen. 4:14). “Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him” (Gen. 4:15). As Adam and Eve were shown mercy and covered with the skins of animals, so Cain was given a mark. Cain's mark would calm his two primary fears: the fear of wandering and the fear of being killed. The mark was placed upon him for protection and would bring seven-fold vengeance upon anyone who murdered him.
Most scholars agree that there is not a clear understanding of Cain’s mark. The word in Hebrew for mark, 'ot, first occurs in Gen. 1:14 in regard to the luminaries marking the times and seasons. The same word is used to describe a “sign” or “marking” of covenant, i.e., the rainbow (Gen. 9:12-13,17) and circumcision (Gen. 17:11). The Sabbath is also described as a sign (Ex. 31:13, 17) or mark. Most of the occurrences of the word 'ot refer to miraculous signs such as the plagues inflicted upon the Egyptians, the igniting of the food before Gideon (Judg. 6:17) and the shadow advancing upon the steps of the palace steps (2 Kings 20:9). According to the TWOT, page 18, it:
...either signifies the unusual event itself or in someway points to that unusual event. Or it may point backward to a historical event such as the stones in the Jordan (Josh. 4:6), or even forward to such a promise as a thornless future world (Isa. 55:13).
The 'ot placed upon Cain implies a special sign and marking that will make a difference in the history of mankind. In my opinion, it was the gifting to build a city, a place of protection, and it was a sign of God's mercy to Cain. Hence, he would be able to shelter other evildoers as himself. The mark was a sign of deliverance from death, fear and wandering-a walled city (which was the fruit of the mark) would act as an 'ot to its citizens. The chronology of events adds credence to this conclusion.

Re "City"...Apply the 'Law of First Mention', and dig into Strong's(5892) and Brown, Driver & Briggs for the Etymology of the Hebrew word rendered 'City'...You may or may not be surprised when you consider all that's going on today:
    "A City

    Noun - feminine singular
Strong's Hebrew 5892: 1) excitement, anguish 1a) of terror 2) city, town (a place of waking, guarded) 2a) city, town

53:40 Did Cain build a huge city? Probably not all by himself. His wife probably became tired of wandering aimlessly through the land of Nod with a baby, and Cain decided to settle down and raise a family. It might have grown into a city eventually as his offspring increased.
    Genesis 4:17 (taken from KJV+)
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded an [encampment,H5892] and called the name of the [encampment,H5892], after the name of his son, Enoch.
    H5892 (Strong)
    עָיַר עָר עִיר
    ‛ı̂yr ‛âr ‛âyar
    eer, awr, aw-yar'
From H5782 a city (a place guarded by waking or a watch) in the widest sense (even of a mere encampment or post): - Ai [from margin], city, court [from margin], town.
    Total KJV occurrences: 1094
