      Is a 3ft tank a good size? I plan on making plenty of places to chill/hide! I live near a slate mine so my vivarium will be a mix of slate and rock caves with a natural substrate and a mixture of fake plants and succulents to begin with. I want to to fit its purpose but I also want it to look attractive to the eye when viewing....I've been a fish keeper all my life and always had a 4ft tank. I had a common lizard when I was just a kid and now I have kids of my own I really fancied getting my youngest a Leo. I'm wondering if they come in more luminous colours like bright yellow/orange/green/red/pink etc????

      These geckos are crevice dwellers, often choosing to squeeze between rocks/objects or under low-height ledges, etc in the ground. That kind of stuff is more useful than foliage. Ever see leopard gecko habitat? Where is all the foliage? Not really there, at least not like a jungle. Will plants hurt? Well, no. But my advice is to tailor the cage to what a gecko would want. They like to butt-up against things or in a cave where they are kind of protected (in their little minds) but can exit quickly as needed, or to grab a bug. One large, expansive low-height cave made from foam is better than what is mostly sold for geckos in stores. They can go under it, they can climb on it, it can cover warm areas and cooler areas. You can then glue some fake plants on top of that, or a holder for a real plant. But leave most of the cage a big crevice.

    Yes agree all the way! I think it definitely depends on how active your particular lizard is, I upgraded my baby Indonesian Blue Tongue Skink after he reached almost full size (he was over 18 months and almost 20") I got slightly larger than recommended for an adult BTS, but he is so active and way over 2' long now that I'm going to have to upgrade to something much bigger, he is very bold and loves to explore so for him I could go much larger without any issues because he is fine at finding his heat and UVB. If he was timid and not very active he would be fine in his current tank like most other BTS.

    I definitely believe bigger is better. I dream about getting my first Leo and upgrading my cresties tank once I move out. Just because an animal Is small doesn’t mean it’s enclosure should be! I think people forget these guys come from the wild sometimes. Take hamsters for example, they’re tiny little creatures but they can cover over 5 miles of flat terrain a night! Geckos may not move as much as mammals but I think they do more than just move from one cave to the next, and I’m positive they do a bit of exploring. Thank you for being such a good example in the reptile community, especially because you have shown me and others the possibilities when owning a little gecko friend

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 3 роки тому

      They do explore but only for a few reasons - new food source, a mate, or a seasonal retreat, such as a Winter retreat vs a Spring or Summer retreat. Other than that - they stay in a rather small home area. So they are not like mammals that migrate or sort of do, everything is much closer for a gecko.
      It is better to do a medium cage correctly than a giant cage incorrectly. These animals have a high predator avoidance sense. Open space is not their go-to. Yeah in captivity they tend to lose some of that response, but still, bigger is not necessarily better.

  • @daniellek.2456

    Both of my leopard geckos are kept in their own 40g breeder, lots of coverage. Also depends on personality, one likes 1 hide in particular so spends 90% of his day inside. The other 10% is spent basking under his DHP, drinking water, exploring. The other leo just loves exploring and is always out and about when his lights go off. Coverage pretty much goes for all reptiles. I have a Eastern Blue Tongue Skink, he's in a 5x2x3. Now, I added 11" of substrate because in his temporary 20g he burrowed ALL the time (also not a ton of room for hides) but in his big bioactive tank, he hasen't burrowed once in the 5 or 6 months he's been in there, and he was stuck in there as a very young juvenile. He's got plenty of places to run to.

      The problem with some of the large LG cages one can now see on you tube and places is that they have a great deal of wasted space that the gecko will not really use much anyway. While a 40 gal tank is fine, I think you can make a 25 gal work very well for a single gecko. Fake crevice - one big one. You can make it from foam - there are videos on you tube. Cover most of the cage bottom. That is what they like. You can go 2 stories if you want. That in a 25 gal tank is just as good as any 40 gal.

      Quarantine on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor their health. After, good options include zoo med’s Reptisoil or a mix that’s 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand. Although tree fern fibre is much more environmentally sustainable if you can find it.
      Just make sure that your husbandry is good (hot spot of 92-95, ideally overhead heating, etc.) and they’ll do great.

    If you have three leos it's best to just rent them a nice one bedroom apartment. Kidding of course, great videos, but they don't need crazy large space :)

    I've recently got myself 2 leopard geckos around 3 weeks ago. The breeder said that they're around 3 months old so I'll assume they're around 4 months old at this point. The breeder said that it's sufficient to feed 2-3 crickets 2x a week but i did my research and as i find out that as juveniles they should be fed everyday (please correct me if I'm wrong). When i got them they weigh under 10 grams at around 10cm or so. I looked up how much they should be at their age and I'm afraid they're growth is stunted. Are they underweight? And if so is there a way to get them back on track yo where they're supposed to be at? I've been feeding them 3-5 crickets a day and every other day switch to a few baby dubias and also currently keeping them in a small container (that is already 2x the size the breeder recommended for them). I'm also in the middle of creating them they're final homes where they'll have 10g each. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thankss :)
    P.s. Great video! I've been watching a lot of your videos since I've got my geckos :)

      I'm more familiar with cresties but boosting a gecko's protein intake is a decent way to encourage growth so you're on the right track with giving them more insects. If you're not already you should start gut loading the insects, too, to get more nutrients in.

    • @maxxl7747
      @maxxl7747 3 роки тому

      @@novaava Yes! I do gutload my feeder insects prior feeding it to them and also dust them with calcium and the occasional multivitamin supplements on the insects. They do look healthy, no signs of diseases or abnormalities but I'm just worried that they're underweight and I'm afraid that they'll stay small even when they're older. Thanks for the reply :)

    I think having a bigger tank with hides is good, since they get the small space in the hides, but the bigger space to explore. But obviously it depends from each leopard gecko, I am getting my Leo a bigger tank since she is mainly climbing and pretending to be a crestie 😂

    With a deep heat projector, how do you provide heat during the night seeing as you would need to turn it off? My baby has a heatmat and a ceramic heat bulb, she seems to enjoy it, sleeping on her heat mat and exploring during the night. She did however lose her appetite significantly and I was told to change her heating system. I used a halogen bulb and turned it off at night as suggested, however when I did this she just hid in her warm hide the entire night and didnt come out, I then left her heat mat on and she was just stuck to it still
