- Today is the first sea day for the FIRST cruise to Alaska for 2024! We are the only ship in Alaska this week, what a cool thing! I did a behind the scenes ship tour, we attended an art auction, and enjoyed the Latitudes cocktail party!
I love it when there is motion. It makes me feel like I am on a ship at sea. Exciting.
We board in 5 days. Yay! Excited! Thanks for sharing.
You will have a great time!
I was on the first sail on the encore this year and that first sea day was the same. I was very sick. Went to the observation lounge and watch the horizon and almost instantly felt better. It worked out well because of the light food right there.
Yes, I am very grateful they have food in the observation lounge. We were on the same deck as it, so it was very easy to walk down and grab something.
I just booked this cruise for next year, first cruise of the season on the Bliss. Thank you for posting this, gives me an idea of what to expect. First Alaska cruise and this will be my second on NCL (first is this September, New England/Canada out of NY). So lets see if I still get seasick the first night night like I used to when I last cruised...40 years ago!
This was my second Alaskan cruise, the last one I did was in July on the Joy. This second day, same as last time, was the ONLY day of rough seas. So if you prepare yourself for this one day, you should be fine the rest of the trip! Take Dramamine the night before to get it into your system, and just stay on top of it. We will continue to post each day of the cruise, and we spent $0 on shore excursions, so this should give you an idea of what is available to do, as many shops and normal excursions still closed this early in the season.
Green Apples 🍏 help with motion sickness a lot! And Ginger candy
Thank you for the tip! I never heard of green apples being beneficial, I will have to test that out!
Wow those are rough seas. We are going to Alaska in June 2025 on the Encore and wondered how the seas are since we have heard they can be a little rough. Also thanks for sharing the behind the scenes ship tour. That was really neat.
It was way worse on my last Alaska cruise which was in July 2019. Both times it was just that one sea day, so once you get past that, it should be smooth sailing!
Hey we were on that same cruise!! First Alaska cruise for us and it was awesome! SO beautiful….but those waves on that first sea day were CRAZY! It didn’t matter where you were on that ship- you felt it! I think going later in the season is better. From what I learned, the whales are more active and you have a better chance of seeing the glaciers. We were bummed that we missed that since we couldn’t get down the fjord and had to turn around. But DEFINITELY worth the trip and look forward to going again!!
Yep, way more activity later in the year. But huge tradeoff with the crowds in port.
So awesome you get a behind the scenes tour. HAL stopped it during covid and has never started it back. HAL is having a hard time knowing the meaning of customer service. They do talks and videos of behind the scenes and sucks. Thanks for sharing and safe sailings.
Thanks for sharing!
Yay! My sister and I are on the Bliss 22 days from now. Will be my first time eligible for the cocktail party. I drink very little; declined the beverage package but I may imbibe at that party.
With the cocktail party, they walk around with a tray of drink options. They have a mocktail Pina colada by default, but I am sure if you go to the bar and ask for a different mocktail, they will make you whatever you want :)
@@journeywiththejaneks That's good. My sister just had bariatric surgery in February so she is avoiding alcohol. I actually drink but only occasionally; on this 7 day cruise I will probably have 1-2 cocktails over that whole week, so the beverage package would be a complete waste on me. Nice knowing I may get something free at that party!
First time cruiser here! I just got off the Majestic Princess! 7 days from Seattle to Alaska and back. I woke up the first night around 3:30 and the empty hangers were banging the hell out of my closet. So, I had a random conversation with an elderly lady the next day and I said it was kind of rough last night wasn’t it? She said, oh no honey… that was smooth sailing… I was like WTF! I said what do you call rough! She said my husband got thrown from the bed one time… that was kind of rough! I was really regretting my decision on a cruise ship! But we made it there and back! I’m still loving with the ship, but I survived! Happy sailing everyone!
Wow, I have never heard of someone getting thrown from a bed! That must have been a cruise to somewhere exotic, like Antarctica, with super rough seas.
@@journeywiththejaneks she said it was on a cruise going to the Panama Canal. She didn’t specify the location. She told worst stories after that!
Early in the season is always going to be the rockiest... especially that far north. If motion sickness is a thing for you, you're best holding off until Mid to late summer.
I did the same cruise in July/August 2019, and it was actually way worse. I couldn't even get out of bed, and my friend who doesn't get motion sickness at all was even feeling it. Luckily, just like the last time I went, it was only this day. The rest of the cruise was totally fine.
Green apples and also ginger like ginger candy is good for sea sickness also.
Yep! I actually have both of those food items as recommendations on another video I made specifically for sea sickness!
Usually being forward or aft of the ships and higher up are the worse for feeling ship movement in the rough seas like you experienced. Did you notice if closer to the middle was better at all?
What's interesting is I did that ship tour at 9 AM, and we were down in the laundry facilities, deck 3 midship, it was pretty rough. That's about as low and center as you could get.
@@journeywiththejaneks Wow!
I’m new to your channel, really enjoying your videos 😊
Thank you! We have 3 more days of the trip to go (we release one of these every 2 days, so the daily vlogs will be done by next weekend), and then we will be doing a bunch of tips and commentary videos about the trip.
19 more days, and I'll be on the Bliss, for the 7 day Alaska. I had a rough sea day, on the way to Hawaii, a few years ago.
Have a great trip!
I think we will be on that same cruise! Our first cruise ever! I am very prone to motion sickness so this video has made me a bit wary.
Don't they recommend trying to get center ship if you have seasickness issues?
I don't know if it was my Dramamine kicking in once we were out and about or if were towards the middle for most of the day's activities but there was a difference. However if you're someone who gets very seasick and can't get out of bed I don't know what would make the most difference.
I sure did got seasick at sea
I have a cruise coming up on October of this year on the Jewel I’ve been on the Bliss she’s big
My first cruise EVER was on the Jewel! The different size ships all have their pros and cons. The Jewel should be a more relaxed crowd.
I heard its hard to see the auroras on the ships because of the lights. I have to take the hangers off and put them on the floor because the clanking annoy me.
We finally have clear skies towards the end of the cruise, but we were too far south at that point. During the Officer Talk, they did say they see them at night sometimes. So I think it's possible, but it has to be very strong overhead activity (which we never had). For the hangers, we stuffed one of our coats between them, and they didn't clang at all (other than for the video, of course).
@@journeywiththejaneks nice. We are hoping to see the Aurora on our cruise to Alaska mid May. I always seem to miss them by sleeping. The only ones I have seen is dancing but no colour. I finally have a phone that has night mode to pick up the colour.
We monitored the aurora forecast with this website: www.gi.alaska.edu/monitors/aurora-forecast
One reason I think you could possibly see them, even with the heavy lights on a cruise ship, is because we have been able to see the Milky Way multiple times on Royal Caribbean ships that allow you onto the bow (Independence and Freedom).
I belong to India. Is vegetarian option available in this cruise?
Yes plenty! They have a whole section with Indian foods in the buffet, and always have vegetarian options in the dining rooms.
When you book any cruise, request Indian meal for dinner. Indian chefs make really good food and you can still get other non Indian dishes. Everything is included.
I'm having sympathy seasickness just watching this video! We are going on our first cruise 2 Alaska in a few weeks. This video is making me very nervous! 🤮🤦🏼♀️😯😱 I do appreciate your honest review though, so I can prepare myself as much as possible!
The cruise the week after us reported as very calm, so it's hard to say what experience you will have. I will say that this was my second time to Alaska (the other time was in July) and both times this sea day was rough... don't be nervous, just plan for the worst. The big thing is to not get disappointed if you need to stay in the room a bit more on this day. The rest of the trip will be amazing.
@@journeywiththejaneks Thank you for that encouragement!!! I don't like to fly and I don't like Rocky ships! 😂
I watched a couple of your videos and I appreciated you showing the excursions. I couldn't believe how much they cost to do it through the cruise line and we don't have a giant endless budget. The beautiful nature is the main thing I want to see! Thanks again
@ReeceS6419 we paid $0 for excursions the entire trip. You don't to spend anything to have a great time, especially if you are into history. Once these daily videos are done, I am going to do a separate video explaining what we did each day, as well as give options for budget-friendly excursions if you really want to do ones.
@@journeywiththejaneks I would like to see that video! We really wanted to see the lumberjack show everyone was talking about, which if you went on your own and bought two tickets was $91. Through the cruise line it was well over $400. It really turned us off on the excursions. we will put our focus on history and scenery!
@ReeceS6419 I did the lumberjack show in 2019 and did not like it... It was very little action and a lot of in-show advertisements... The one excursion I would recommend spending money on is the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. It was sold out for us, and there were no third party tours available either, since it was so early in the season. But you can have a great trip not paying for any excursions. I really dislike walking tours, as the pace is too slow for me, so we do our own through Adventure Labs with the Geocaching app. You'll see us do those tours in all 4 ports.
I’m on this cruise in two weeks. I’ve got patches and ginger gum.
The cruise that went the week after us had great weather, so hopefully you do as well! It's going to be hit or miss, so better to be prepared! If you go in knowing that day 2 may be rough, I think it will make for a better trip, since you will be prepared for the worst case scenario.
Another of people will be in their rooms feeling ill 😂
Yep. The next video is Sitka, our first cruise port, and will be released on Sunday. You can tell when watching that one that EVERYONE wanted off that ship after such a rough day at sea. Lots of Do Not Disturb lights on when walking past people's cabins this day...
The paid tour goes to areas the Latitudes tour does not such as the bridge.
Yes, I was going to add a note about that, but I decided against it. In my opinion, even with the bridge, I still don't think it's worth the price.
Oh, man. Just no.
The seas were perfectly calm after this day, thankfully!
