Every year, Gujarat celebrates more than 200 festivals. The International Kite Festival (Uttarayan) is regarded as one of the biggest festivals celebrated.[1] Months before the festival, homes in Gujarat begin to manufacture kites for the festival.
The festival of Uttarayan marks the day when winter begins to turn into summer, according to the Indian calendar. It is the sign for farmers that the sun is back and that harvest season is approaching which is called Makara Sankranti. This day is considered to be one of the most important harvest day in India. Many cities in Gujarat organize kite competition between their citizens where the people all compete with each other. In this region of Gujarat and many other states, Uttarayan is such a huge celebration that it has become a public holiday in India for two days.[2] During the festival, local food such as Undhiyu (a mixed vegetable including yam and beans), sesame seed brittle and Jalebi is served to the crowds.[3][4] Days before the festival, the Records book due to the participation of 42 countries in it that year.Kite flying is a very popular fun sport especially in China, Japan, India, Indonesia, and USA. It is not certain where the Kites first originated. Some believe it is originated in China while other think it is South Pacific Islanders who first originated the art of kite flying. It is also most popular pass times for the people around the world.

1. Japan Kite Festival
In Japan the Kite Festival is held every year in the first week of May in the city of Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture. During this time the blue sky of the Great Sand Dune in the city changes in to colorful battlefield. Thousands of men, women children dresses in happi coats come here and fly their beautiful kites above. There is a public transportation which runs daily from Japan Railway’s Hamamatsu Station to Festival Museum during this event. From the museum, people can walk for 10 minutes to reach the Great Sand Dunes.
2. China Kite Festival
The kite festival in china held every year at Weifang, China. The festival attracts thousands of kite enthusiasts from every corner of the country as well as around the world. You will also find most amazing handcrafted kites here. The festival held every year in the month of April. During this week long festival the city is decorated with beautiful lanterns and various colorful streamers. The Weifang Kite Museum is one of the biggest kite museums in the world.
3. Jakarta Kite Festival
The International Kite Festival of Jakarta is one of the most famous and oldest festivals of Indonesia. It is held in the month of July every year which lasts for 2 days. People from all around the country fly to Jakarta and actively participate in this fun festival. Even visitors from other countries like China, Malaysia, Japan, and Netherlands participates in this event. A huge dragon size kite can also be seen in the sky of Jakarta which attracts many spectators.
