Thank you for doing this timeless classic. Spoof comedy is sometimes difficult to understand. Literalism and the Jest of things are always the key. And some improv. That's Airplane in a nutshell. if you want a real classic spoof comedy. Mel Brooks was a genius at it. I very much suggest a Reaction to High Anxiety-1977. It is a brilliant and amuzing tribute to Alfred Hitchcock. I also recommend The Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers. Return Of The Pink Panther-1975, The Pink Panther Strikes Again-1976, Revenge Of The Pink Panther- 1978. These are comedy masterpieces. I think You would enjoy them. Well just a few suggestions. Hope you had a fun Birthday🎂🎂🎂. Peace. 🙏

One of the things that makes it funny is that everybody plays it completely straight (except for 'Johnny' who ad-libbed all his lines).
This was Leslie Nielsen's first comedic role, while he later did a lot of comedy, before this he was a serious dramatic actor.

It was also the first comedy for Lloyd Bridges (air traffic controller), Peter Graves (the pilot), and Robert Stack (Capt. Rex Kramer). Stack played Elliot Ness on "The Untouchables, Graves played Jim Phelps in "Mission: Impossible", and Bridges played a diver in "Sea Hunt".

It's even funnier if you know the cast, 3 of the most serious actors ever were given big roles: Peter Graves ("Mission: Impossilbe" and "Biography"), Robert Stack ("Unsolved Mysteries" and "The Untouchables") and Lloyd Bridges ("Sea Hunt") plus the whitest woman on TV Barbara Billingsley is the one who speaks the slang language 'jive' (you cut her scenes). And the funny Leslie Nielsen was a serious actor before this, he starred in the classic sci-fi film "Forbidden Planet" with the beautiful Ann Francis.

So, obviously a lot has changed with air travel since this movie was made- There did used to be a smoking section on airplanes; In the late 70s, LAX became notorious for members of religious cults coming up and bothering people in the terminal. (I believe it was the Hari Krishnas who used to offer people flowers)
Also, this movie is directly spoofing the Airport franchise- Almost every passenger on the plane is taken straight from an Airport movie.
The flashback scenes are spoofing Saturday Night Fever and An Affair To Remember

You don't understand anything. I remind you that the child mistook him for a basketball player, and in fact on paper and in real life he was: Kareem Abdul-Jabar.
That "thing" is an image of St. Christopher, patron saint of travel.
As for the Israeli Airlines plane thing, keep in mind the year the movie was made. Everything has changed a lot. You can't make jokes about pedophilia or zoophilia anymore either. I also find it racist that they need an interpreter to understand black slang. And of course, you can't smoke on airplanes anymore (as for having sex, I'm not so sure)....

I'm amazed at how many setups you left in but omitted the punchlines, not even the "Don't call me Shirly" line which is the most famous. I'm wondering how many jokes you missed, some are visual and others are audio. Did you notice that during all the flight scenes you can hear the propellers of the engines even though it's a jet engine plane? And the jars of mayonnaise lining the wall of the Mayo clinic? The fact that there's no engine under the 'hood' of the plane to check the oil? The label on the magazine rack? Many jokes don't make sense, they exist just to make us laugh. Some require knowledge of older films ("From Here to Eternity" for the beach scene) or TV ads like the line "Jim never has a 2nd cup of coffee at home." And most people don't know Ted was wearing a Navy uniform, not an Air Force one which are blue today.
The 2nd film "Airplane II: The Sequel" is pretty good too just not as original.

This movie parodies the movie "Zero Hour" (1957)" . Many of the actors were primarily dramatic actors in films and TV from the 1950s through the 1970s. Part of the humor was having those dramatic actors play in a farce comedy. You're too young to catch a lot of the jokes. Old people like me enjoy this movie the most.

I feel like there are a lot of language barriers, cultural barriers, old references, old technologies and customs that will go over your head, but hopefully there’s enough that’s visually funny you’ll still enjoy the movie.

Especially what makes the 'jive talking' scene with the lady so funny. I saw it when it came out with a pack audience and that scene got the biggest laugh. Young folks just think she's a old lady but for us older folks she's 50's TV's suburban mom, June Cleaver.

Wich is fine if you like seeing cast an crew interviews an behind the scenes secrets. But be aware the long haul version is like 3 to 4 hours long. But in a interview the actor that played the pilot that ask. All those wird questions to the kid said. When they went to film that scene he keep one eye on the exits. Just incase he had to make a run for it because. Even he was like you want me to say this stuff to a kid. So he was reedy to run just in case.

    1. If you saw Leslie Neilson as a child you're older than you look. LOL
    2. This is a movie you have to watch more than once because the gags go by so fast they're easy to miss.
    Examples:
The airplane is a jet but we hear propeller sound.
Ted was in the Air Force but wears a Navy Lt. Uniform in the bar scene then changes into the Saturday Night Fever threads.
The fish one the ocean beach is a freshwater catfish.
A couple of the Hari Krishna's actually flew somewhere.
    3. :You missed some of the iconic gags, "Don't call me Shirly" and "It's a big building with patients but that's not important right now".
    4. They break the forth wall because they're supposed to.
    5. Otto has his own IMDB page.
    6. Airpine II is funnier. Destination moon.
