  • Our Patron community has been asking me to take a look at Lord of the Lost for a couple years now (thanks Andy) and it wasn't until the controversy around Eurovision this year that I decided I have to see what I'm missing out on. Here's a question: How did this band get last place in the finals? This was absolutely INCREDIBLE!
    Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Lord of the Lost for the first time, performing "Blood & Glitter”.

    My favorite bit is how them opening for Maiden came to be, there's a bit of an interview on it, essentially they got a call from their agent if they would like to open for Iron Maiden, their response was, of course, agree to everything. Next day, their agent calls them back, to confirm their placement. Their reaction "So, how much is it going to cost us?", the agent starts laughing, band goes "what? what? what?", agent responds "You understood that wrong, Iron Maiden asked You if you'd like to open for them", as it turns out Steve Harris (IM bassist) heard them and wanted them to go on stage/tour with LotL.

    I've worked so many gigs over the years, I don't always remember particular bands unless they make an impression (either good or bad!), but when Lord of the Lost came to town about 5 years ago, they made an instant and enduring positive impression for how awesome they were on stage, and how sweet they were off stage. I've been asking my boss to get them back to Glasgow ever since - and they'll be back soon! Very excited.

    Germany was robbed this year! I've been a Eurovision fan since 1976 & I've never said a country was robbed before. It was sheer injustice, especially with the juries putting them last. How the hell could industry "professionals" not understand the complexity of the vocals & music? The amount of talent this band has is epic.
    If you're looking for other songs by LotL, I'd recommend One Last Song (slower), Raining Stars (more electronic elements) & Ruins (heavier). Or you could simply try La Bomba (what I call salsa-metal).

      Completely rigged so that it's held in Sweden for the 50th anniversary of Waterloo winning. Finland would have won otherwise.

    • @yaboyjay7202
      @yaboyjay7202 Рік тому +8

      They for sure didn't deserve last place, but I wouldn't say they were robbed. Their bad luck was that Finland also sent an alternative act that was just much better - and was actually robbed of winning by the jury. Besides that I do think that Chris is an outstanding harsh vocalist, but his cleans are just passable. And finally, they represented Germany and we are so used to not getting points from anyone regardless of the performace, so they started from behind anyways.

  • @onelittlelaurie
    @onelittlelaurie Рік тому +111

    I‘m only 5 minutes into the video, but already loving your reaction 😊 He does do the ‘stutter‘ in his harsh vocals live! I assumed it was post-production until they proved me wrong at the Eurovision preselection performance. It sounds just as good live.
    Chris would be a great candidate for a Tea Time Interview!!

      @axelkoch4068 Рік тому +6

      Yes, he does the stutter in the German finals, but sadly not so good in the finals in Liverpool.
      Overall I liked the vocal performance in the German finals better than the one in the grand final in Liverpool.
      But either way it is a shame the got last in esc.

      I'm confused 🤔 I saw a video on their channel where Chris explains the vocal part and I think he said, it was done in the post-production

    • @olgapisova6207
      @olgapisova6207 Рік тому +2

      @@stapelfrau6827 I've watched the part in video from the national final, just to be sure. It sounds like some kind of effect is used, but he has to be doing at least part of the heavy lifting himself, imo. I mean, it's a little like using autotune - it can help with minor issues but it definitely won't fix bad technique. It can be, however, used in non-standard (or at least originally unintended) ways, e.g. Cher back in the day used extreme autotune to glitch her vocals, and various rappers do a similar thing but it's more like a constant pitch shifting where it shouldn't be normally possible. This exact song, it seems they use something similar, but for a different characteristic than pitch.

    • @AkayukiSan
      @AkayukiSan 10 місяців тому +3

      @@olgapisova6207I think it's an effect in this case (and was at the ESC where effects are allowed), but he kind of also does it sometimes in other songs at concerts by knocking on his chest on long notes.

    One of my favorite things about LotL is how much variety they have. They have a new focus for every album, and this album is more 80s glam rock. I also met them a couple of times after concerts and they're one of the nicest bands I've ever met. Really sweet, taking time to talk to every fan at least a few minutes and patiently waiting until every last one got their photo or signature. 🖤 So happy to finally see them on your channel and I'm also happy for them getting even more fans after Eurovision. Here in Germany they've been really big in the Goth and Metal scene for years and consistently got bigger and more beloved with every album, they really work hard for their success! 🙌🩸✨ I bet Chris would do a Tea Time Interview with you, he's been on Mark's (Kardavox), Tank's and other Channels already and I think he's always up for a chat with other fellow musicians. 🥰

    Hi dear Elizabeth....for such a premier talent German goth and synth band, rather surprised you have not done reaction analysis on them. This one is very much on their "pop/synth" side and was their song as representing Germany in this years POLITICAL driven Eurovision awards. Best band there and they came in last place...shaking my head still. How talented are they? They also do orchestral arrangements with symphonies at times. Chris is an accomplished Cellist as well. It may be long time before you get back them, but please do, to see the full metal glory of them. I suggest either Under The Sun or Drag Me To Hell.

    I would love to hear your analysis of more popular tracks of LoTL like e.g. "Loreley" (having been in Germany you know a bit of German folk tales and their influence even on classical music as being an opera singer yourself). "Blood & Gitter" is not really LoTL's best track and performance, not only because it didn't worked out in Eurovision, but Chris' vocals are not even close to his usual abilities.

    They deserved a much higher score. But you never know with the eurovision audience. They're fickle. You should check out Finland's song. It rules. That was the real outrage because the audience overwhelmingly voted for them, but the jury said "Nah, we want it in Sweden."

    Hi, Elizabeth! If you would like to listen to more of this years Eurovision songs, you should check out Finland's representative Käärijä's song "Cha cha cha", he came second in the whole contest with that song! Another good song from this years ESC is Australia's representative Voyager's song "Promise". I hope you could do an analysis about those songs! And my final suggestion would be Finland's representative of 2006 called Lordi and their song "Hard Rock Hallelujah": it is by far the only time Finland has won the Eurovision Song Contest, AND it is a really catchy hard rock song with its quite simple main guitar riff and backing vocals! Love from Finland!!!♥

    LotL have stronger songs, but here they represented us worthily. As a German, you have to ask yourself whether we wouldn't have come last with Electric Callboy. The Finns had Electric Callboy on stage, so to speak ;)
    Chris and the boys proudly showed what Germany can do. The whole discussion about the last place is idle. If you tour with Iron Maiden, you can also take last place at the ESC. We would have done similarly with the other participants. Thanks for the video :)

  • @firstclaw1

    Thank you for your great analysis. It gave me much additional information about the song and how well it is made.
    When I saw the competition, I also believed their low placement in the ESC 2023 was a total disregard of the song quality and the artists performance. I wonder if they wouldn't have gotten more points if they had represented a different country...
    Anyway, in my books when watching the ESC this song was definitely a Top 5 song, if not Top 3. I'm not sure if No. 1, although I saw the potential then.
    After this analysis I came to the conclusion, that this song had the potential for No. 1,and that especially the juries of the ESC are not qualified to do their job properly.

    • @gruneslavendelgelb909
      @gruneslavendelgelb909 Рік тому

      Yes where not that good this year, but not catastrophal.
      So the juries have four categories.
      Performance
      Composition
      Voice
      Originality
      At the beginning I want to say the I like this song.
      The voice was good but not one of the best (we had many good singers this year)
      The Performance was good, but in the comparison in the middle (many good performances).
      The Song itself it not really original and not so good composed (it is okay).
      So this result was not so suprising. I mean yes last place was not deserved. I would put them in like place 19-21 in the jury ranking but not higher. And there is a problem the average of the rankings Germany was like 18th, but with the 18th place you don't get any points. With the Average Germany wasn't last anymore.
      The other thing is that there are many good songs etc.
      I would put Armenia or Spain in first place as a jury.

      For the Televoting:
      Metal is not popular in the Esc and in the Esc Community it also was not popular. It was place 24-28 (I don't remember the exact place) in MyEurovisionScorebourd from 37 songs.
