In the game, Alphys explains to Frisk that she was conducted to do an experiment that could create enough power to break the barrier. The experiment was taking monsters who had "fallen down" (in other words, died) and inject them with Determination. For a while, said monsters came back to life and everything was fine; however... monsters' physical bodies cannot withstand such determination. Then, the monsters slowly melted and became fused with each other, creating the monstrosities that are located in the True Lab. So, in this comic (despite it being a Pacifist run most likely), somehow Papyrus sadly ends up dead. Sans rushes him to Alphys' lab and thus she injects him with Determination along with the other monsters in the story. Unfortunately, Papyrus ends up falling apart due to the injection his body cannot withstand, and because Sans is in such close contact, the two end up melting and fusing into the creepy creation at the end.

In the True Lab, the player (Frisk) spares all these mixed-up monsters by making them remember their lives, as the monsters, called Amalgamates in the game, attack Frisk for food. So uh, hope that helps clear things up.

It is meant to preserve their SOULS and keep them alive but a monsters body cannot handle the amount of DETERMINATION that they are given and fuse with other monsters to sustain themselves. That is what happened to Sans and Papyrus, luckily though, they dont become an Amalgamate in the real story. The creature created by Sans and Papyrus's fusion is "Sixbones".

+Nyx Papyrus and Sans became an Amalgamate, It happens when an injection of DETERMINATION which was created by Alphys is given to a monster. It is meant to preserve their SOULS and keep them alive but a monsters body cannot handle the amount of DETERMINATION that they are given and fuse with other monsters to sustain themselves. That is what happened to Sans and Papyrus, luckily though, they dont become an Amalgamate in the real story. The creature created by Sans and Papyrus's fusion is "Sixbones".
