    The original WOW signal was not a recording of audio, it was a series of numbers relating to frequencies. The audio people are hearing is just a guess, not an actual recording of a signal.

      Exactly, and captured in 12 second "snapshot" intervals at that.
      This audio everyone knows was a slowed down aviation, or police scanner recording originally used as part of a dramatized illustrative tool for a TV program on possible communication with alien civilizations.
      If audio was captured, or a continuous signal could be synthesized into an audio form, it would probably sound cool, and mysterious, but it simply wasn't, and this has been confirmed directly from those who worked there at the time, and also those who have extensive knowledge of the scanning equipment used at the time.
      The protocol was that audio was only recorded when viable, modulated (indication of an intelligent transmission), repeatable signals could be found, and this came down to tech limitations, funding, but most importantly scientific integrity.
      The "Wow!" was never found again, but given how powerful it was, and how long it lasted, it's too bad we never were able to find it again.
      If we had the tech we do now back then, whatever it was, it would be impressive still, just as with some of the FRB's we are finding today with modern ultra-sensitive equipment.

    It sounds like: "We lost him at 7pm, We've got a 10-61 FH1." Well I know that this has to be a police radio transmission because this is what 10-61 means, it means domestic violence. And FH1 is a unit for police dogs. So what happened is they lost a guy at 7pm that they were chasing for domestic violence, so they were going to send dogs to find him. Simple

      YOURE CORRECT BECAUSE IT WAS SOME HOW SIGNALS DISTORTED BY SOMETHING, CAUSED IT TO HEAR DIRECT RADIO SOUND ELECTRO WAVES AND THE DETECTED IN THE WRONG AREA. OR IT WAS ALIENS THAT HAVE KNOWN OUR KNOWLAGE AND COPIED US SO ITS POSSIBLE THERES ANOTHER EARTH WITH LIFE. COULD THIS MEAN WE DETECTED LIFE?

      Kevin Tran Or... it was just an interception of a police signal? I mean, these dishes could pick up any kind of EM waves, so if a transmission from a police officer accidentally got in range, then the dishes could've easily picked it up. Why it slowed the signal down so much is unknown.

  • @ZigSputnik

    There was no audio from the 'Wow' signal. The computer was sampling signal levels every 12 seconds and recorded 6 unusually high levels in succession. That's all the 'Wow' signal was. If you want an audio interpretation of the data then it would be 6 clicks 12 seconds apart. Of course the original signal would be more than that, but that information was lost due to the low sampling rate of the computer recording it. The audio signal on the video above is a hoax.

    • @ZigSputnik
      @ZigSputnik 9 років тому

      ObjObj leftblank Ooops! Thanks for that! I've corrected that typo. Yes, the exponential increase and decrease was due to the antenna rotating into and out of the signal source. As you say, the sampling rate was very poor. The design of the recording system was unbelievably bad, especially when you consider the people involved. There were many ways in which the sampling rate could have been greatly increased, with an almost negligible increase in set up and running costs. It's almost as if they deliberately made it crude so that any feature in the data could be speculated upon for decades afterwards, and ensure that the funding kept flowing! Even an audio recording would have been enough to reveal the nature of the source, or at least narrow down the possibilities considerably.

    • @ZigSputnik
      @ZigSputnik 9 років тому

      The horn antenna is pointing skyward in a fixed position and it sweeps the sky due to the rotation of the Earth. So the signal could have been continuous and the location is estimated as being in the constellation Sagittarius, as this is at the right distance to produce the rise and fall over that time period. And yes, the duration is unknown although if you look at the signal strength vs time graph on Wikipedia the signal starts cleanly but finishes with two extra humps. This will be due to the characteristics of the antenna, but It would be interesting to find out how accurately this does match the polar response of the antenna.

    • @Rawrcheeze5549
      @Rawrcheeze5549 9 років тому

      Connor Farnworth Yes it's possible but that signal was recorded from a star system 200 light years away so it would take at least 200 years to reach us which indicates that the "WOW!" Signal could be over 200 years old and if we sent a reply it would take another 200 years for whoever sent the signal to receive it. It is strange that aliens (possibly) would send humans a message i believe this be a warning perhaps they saw something we didn't and are warning us before it happens to us

      K1LLSVV1TCH I don't think so, although I agree that he could have decoded a fake wow signal (I haven't researched enough to say with any certainty) but it's not impossible to get a sound wave from a radio signal. Moreover its entirely possible for this very same sound-bite to be reflected into the telescopes field of view, it does sound like air traffic communication after all.

    • @6to1
      @6to1 9 років тому +6

      Jack Beagle The wow signal isn't a sound the anomaly was based on the intensity variation of the signal... Basically what they know is that whatever the sound was, at points, was 30 times louder than normal deep space. That's what was so wow about the signal... They didn't actually hear anything.

      The timing was perfect in 1977 for something like this to happen when the telegraph system was expanded to include law enforcement agencies (US Marshals, Army, Puerto Rico etc.) that year to help fund the program which was lagging since its 1966 inception. SETI and Telegraph don't operate on the same "wave length" hence the confusion. You may be biased in what you're hearing since you work/like air traffic control. Does your data match the year of recording? Otherwise, it makes sense.

    Here is a thought. I graduated from an audio engineering school in america. One of the biggest things they taught was wave theory and propagation. So if I had to send a message across the universe I would have to stop and think "What frequencies travel further and take more time to propagate as opposed to which frequencies would develop to soon and not travel as far?" Also, which frequencies respond better to diffraction (basically when sound hits an object and reconstructs on the other side)? This would explain why the signal had to be sped up. High frequencies travel further in a uni directional pattern. The original signal sounds like a dirty sine wave.

    Well that's it then. It's all been cleared up. The famous WOW message from 1977 is the voice of a New York Cop who has lost his donuts. Or US pilots flying experimental aircraft (was it the Blackbird at that time?) or astronauts going up or down.
    It says (In a NY accent):"I lost you when you were about 17 on the double ten sixty one. "
    Mach 17 is 'High Hypersonic Speed' (about 10,000 mph),.
    From Wiki: "[At Mach 17] Thermal control becomes a dominant design consideration. Structure must either be designed to operate hot, or be protected by special silicate tiles or similar. Chemically reacting flow can also cause corrosion of the vehicle's skin, with free-atomic oxygen featuring in very high-speed flows. Hypersonic designs are often forced into blunt configurations because of the aerodynamic heating rising with a reduced radius of curvature."
    INTERESTING POINTS:
    1. Babylonian numbering system didn't go beyond Ten (Twenty is two symbols for ten, and thirty is three symbols for ten etc) but at sixty the symbol changed and was identical for the symbol for 'one'. Therefore 20 was a double ten and six and one were 'uniquely the same'.
    2. On the 10th of the 10th 1961 the US tested a nuclear missile at the Nevada site.
    3. NGC 61, a double spiral galaxy in the constellation Pisces
    4. The Double Tenth Agreement, formally known as the Summary of Conversations Between the Representatives of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, was an agreement between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, concluded on 10 October 1945 (the Double Ten Day of the Republic of China) after 43 days of negotiations.
    The agreement would be 17 years old in 1961.
    My guess is some experimental flying at Mach 17.
    The guy in the ground is letting the pilot know that when he reached mach 17 , the equipment (radar/scanner ) lost him while he was performing a double ten (with 61 being the pilots call sign). Or something along those lines.
    If mach 17 seems unlikely then 17 could refer to degrees or percentage of a maneoivre. I hate the word manouevre I can never spell it. Shit.

      Bro it’s fake this is some guy tryna get views lmfao it’s a police transmission using coded things to send a message to other officers. He took this message and slowed it down, then sped it up again to make it seem like he’s decoding it. The radio telescope doesn’t record sounds, it records sound levels. Somebody else has commented explaining how the sound levels work so I’m not going to say it, but the telescope wasn’t recording sounds. There is no sound correlation to any of these codes.

    Pay attention: The "Wow!" sequence itself is not a message. What was received appeared to be a CW (unmodulated) signal. The numbers and letters in the much-reproduced computer printout are merely a time-series representation of the signal amplitude, as received at the Big Ear radio telescope.
    Specifically, the symbols represent the number of standard deviations by which the received signal exceeded average background noise, on a scale of 0 to 35. So a 0 means no stronger than background noise, 1 is one sigma above noise, 9 means nine sigma above noise, an A would be ten units, and U (the strongest peak of the actual signal) is 30 standard deviations above the mean background noise in the receiver. If you graph the sequence as amplitude values over time (each time increment is about twelve seconds), you get roughly a Gaussian distribution, consistent with the antenna pattern of the Big Ear in drift-scan mode.
    Thus, it is impossible to decode.

    ATTEBTION!!! DEBUNKED:
    1. It was a radiowave telescope that picked up the signal
    2. The radiowave telescope transmmits the signals as numbers on a grid, NOT in AUDIO
    3. Even if it were to be recorded, it would have only been recorded beeps or pings
    Summary:
    Somebody wanted attention or thought it would be funny to post a FAKE audio recording of a police radio slowed down, on youtube. So they did and some people don't do their research so they take it seriously and are mislead. The REAL WOW Signal is 100% REAL, but the audio recording is 100% FAKE, there is no audio recorded evidence in existence that the public is aware of or has access to on public internet servers. It is said that it was only recorded once and never again, meaning only on that one sheet of graph paper and never again, no where else.

    Makes sense. Some radio transmission escaped to space, got reflected in a very big distance by some object, and retured straight back (absolute tiny chance) while slowing down (wave length got longer). When you compacted it back to as it was before the long journey, and filtering noises from space junk, debree, moist and such, you get the echo of the real thing! And it sounds military :D Dobra prace

    IF YOU FEEL SCARED, WAIT TILL YOU READ THIS::
    You increased the pitch by the amount f1/f2=(49-1)/(4.2-1)=15 times. Assumming that: 1) The creature who made that sound is organic, 2) the speed "v" of waves traveling through organic tissue is a constant, and 3) applying the string resonance formula f=v/(2L), you can easily calculate that L2/L1=f1/f2=15, or L2=15*L1.
    IN OTHER WORDS, THE CREATURE WHO MADE THAT SOUND MUST BE AROUND... 90 FEET HEIGHT!!!

      lol, imagine it came from a ship. During the beginning of the transmission the ship is heading towards us. Then, in the next seconds it turns. The radio waves heading towards us from the beginning would travel towards us faster than those in the end where the ship completed its turn. Meaning... The last radio waves are traveling slower. This causes the first waves to reach us and be spread out farther than the last causing a stretched out signal. This is why speeding it up gives you these sounds.
      Imagine an ambulance driving by you. The sound as it drives towards you is much higher pitched than those as it drives away from you.
      Same sorta thing.

    • @foop4u219

      john no just no if it was a ship it would have sounded alot lower pitched the wow signal is radio waves being emmited from another so called earth like planet probably trying to ask for help as the race shreds away their atmosphere with nuclear war or falling to close to their star and the transmission fades there

      I doubt it was a ship. That was just an example from my imagination. It is entirely unlikely that an alien race is using our police codes any way. Or that our police codes appear in the language in any form whatsoever.
      It was probably a police car driving and talking on his radio and that transmission "got lucky" and bounced around the atmosphere for a while until the telescope caught it.

      xXBudderGod I'm not saying you didn't do exactly what you've said you did. It's just modulation means you add radio waves to a digitized sound, then demodulate it on the other side. What you have here is similar to playing a soundbackwards and hearing "satan". Optical illusions work in the same way. So, sorry if you thought i was calling you a liar, i wasn't. But the poster is correct, however ignorant. The radio waves WERE infact recorded, though clearly, NOT with audio, as that would be useless without knowing what to demodulate. They were recorded into raw wave data. (numbers) Speeding/slowing radio waves up/down will often create interesting sounds.

    Scores 10 out of 10 on the Absurdity Scale. The WOW signal is not a message but a computer generated measurement of the difference in amplitude between the "signal" and the background noise of space. Why would an alien civilization speak in English (with a midwest accent)? And wouldn't any advanced civ send scientific information, a primer for understanding terms, etc rather than police commands? Unintentionally hilarious.

    With all due respect, the "Wow Signal" was an observation of an electromagnetic pulse via a radiotelescope. Radio waves are not sounds either, although they can be used to carry sounds under certain circumstances. The observatory was *not searching for sounds.* What was observed was not a sound -- it was vastly outside the audio spectrum and there is no recording of it in any sense except for the typing on the computer printout from the Ohio observatory where it was detected. (1) We have no reason to believe that there was any sound encoded in it, (2) if there was, we never had a recording of it, and (3) if there was and we had a recording, we would need the aliens' decoding technology to hear it. But no one ever heard let alone recorded any sound related to the signal.
    We do not know what produced the signal.
    So, whatever recording you are manipulating here, it is in no way related to the "Wow Signal."

      What if the so called "Aliens" have evolved exactly like we have. They could look exactly like we do, and in their language, some bunch of words like "Is there anyone our there" may sound like 1061. This theory may have a low chance, but considering we're talking about a random signal being received over a crap tonne of distance away, I'd say that we don't have a clue what this is. It might even be just a random burst of electromagnetic radiation coming from the sun.

    • @haggispouch8123
      @haggispouch8123 9 років тому +1

      Shorts Their evolution, history, etc., are so similar to ours that they just happen to have developed English??? I'd say the odds of this are not just low but incomprehensibly remote. But the "signal" *WAS NOT A SOUND* and so can't possibly have verbal content of that or any other kind.
      What you are saying assumes that the signal was or included a sound. There was no sound involved. The chance that the signal was, or included, someone someone speaking is zero.

      So, why not just to listen them with a normal radio (audio) reciever with sygnals from 80 kHZ up to 200 Mhz , with some bigger antena? Seti will never find them with that method. Even if they would find their sygnals (which they did with WOW; which was probably a 'packed' (zipped) message with strong EM amplitudes on some short amount of time to some other spaceship or anybody around our own solar system), they will never know what it was... If we want to find species which are similar to us (have ears), then we should seek them through the "music"(audio , Space radio broadcasting waves)... btw what do you think about this document? goldenageofgaia.com/archive/disclosure-archives/nsa-releases-ufo-files-reveals-alien-messages-received/

    People are saying there is no "sound with the "wow" signal but all radio telescopes are picking up sound. That's how the constant hiss that was heard through the the first radio telescope was part of the reason they discovered how old the universe was. If anyone doubts what I am saying watch any documentary about the very first radio telescope. The "Wow" signal WAS recorded as a sound that a computer put into binary code. It makes it much easier to see an anomalie at a glance. But they often don't let people hear the actual signal because they didn't know where it was coming from and they didn't know if it could have been a secret Russian transmission at the time. If this is the real "wow" signal recording then this is amazing!!!! I hear the words "I lost - - - - -?" It's hard to make out the rest. Another signal from space that was decoded by an English astronomer named Duncan Luna is equally amazing and not much about it has been released to the public. But look it up if you find this video interesting because that one will knock your socks off too. Great post!

All the wow signal is are 6 blips 12 seconds appart (lasting 72 seconds) that record radio frequency levels 30 times higher than normal backround space levels for 6 blips before returning to normal. The enteresting thing about it is that the frequency is at 21cm. The same as that of visible light

    Q&A from BigEar site.
    Q:I would like to obtain an audio tape of the "Wow!" signal. Can you provide that to me? A:At the time Big Ear recorded the radio signal that later became known as the "Wow!" signal (based on the notation that Dr. Jerry Ehman wrote in the margin of the computer printout), there was no audio recording equipment attached to the output of that radio telescope. Hence, it is impossible to provide an audio tape of that signal.

    I do hope I'm not the only one that heard "I'm lost *static* secured the area 10 61"

    It sounds to me like an old police radio. "10 61" is code for following a suspicious vehicle.

    That thing could very much be human. Anyone else think this is someone stuck in space or a research on space or somethin?

    Maybe it was pointing at an alien race that studied our language and our culture? Maybe they have our type of radio technology? What if the signal was from another dimension? Maybe they have some sort of translator so they can make the "Wow" signal actually become readable when you do some technical record editing? The possibilities are endless. Now that I think of it, it's disturbing to hear someone out there even if it's not an alien race. What if it was astronauts stranded on a planet and NASA disregards their plea of help and they abandon them? Since it's 2014 now, are they still alive? Who knows. Only time will tell.
