I lived on Palisade Avenue in Jersey City NJ and our kitchen window afforded us a PERFECT view of the building of the bridge through my high school years. Our high school, Dickinson HS on Palisade Ave. also over-looked the project. I also watched the original World Trade Center being built from those windows on which project my grandfather worked a crane on the rising roof.
Fascinating! I was 3-4 yo and our house had a perfect view of the Narrows. I am told that as a little boy I would look out the window and watch the wheel spin the cables - for hours! So, to see this video is truly incredible. Amazing men!
This bridge scared the crap out of me whenever my dad would drive over it when I was a kid. I've driven over numerous times as an adult and it still drives me nuts. The crazy part is that driving on the upper deck is less panic inducing for me than the lower deck.
This bridge is absolutely captivating and mind blowing. I’m scared of heights, and I had to traverse this bad boy 20 times or more a few months ago. I Also didn’t know it cost money to cross because I was too scared to look up at the signs while driving across lol. Got smacked with a $400 toll bill.
I lived on Long Island most of my life, and every time I would leave N.Y. it wasn't a question which way I would take it was always the Verrazano to the Goethals unless there was a problem then I would be forced to reroute. Now when I go to visit family It's still the fastest way to go even though depending on when you arrive you can be sitting on the bridge or offramp for 2-4 hours which is ridiculous.
at the planning for the bridge in the 1930s, then Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia wanted a tunnel instead. A bridge can collapse which would block the access to the Atlantic Ocean. A tunnel can't do that. LaGuardia didn't prevail, perhaps due to traffic official Robert Moses. I believe a tunnel would have been a better choice.
wow, so at 5:24 they started the deck in the middle of the bridge, where I remember when they built the Golden Gate Bridge, the started the road deck by the towers and worked towards the center.
Brooklyn! Brooklyn! The description said the bridge that makes up Staten Islands identity is in Brooklyn and only Brooklyn this is why we're called the forgotten borough and this is why we want to leave NYC
Went over all the x. I guess. Lived in george town n mill basin. But visited Staten Island to c cousins. It has workers buried in cement on brooklyn side. Sad. The cables were so thick.
THIS VIDEO IS OUT OF SYNC ... AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT THE MAN AND WORKER WHO BUILT THE BRIDGE... NOT SOME CHICK WALK TO THE STORE TO HET HER... MILK AND BREAD!

Very cool! My Grandpa was one of the bridge builders.
Could have been a great vid if the sound was aligned. Does anyone ever check these things before they upload?

Verranzano bridge is one of the most beautiful bridges to visit in the state island and brooklyn new york area

This bridge is amazing. Think of all the brains that went into its design and the construction of it. An incredible feat of engineering.
the Audio is way out of Sync

Originally, the Brookkyn-Battery Tunnel was to be a bridge, but they made it a tunnel while the Narrows tunnel became a bridge.
The audio is different from the video for much of this.
I was given this vhs tape and this is how it was.. I uploaded it for a friend who's dad worked on the bridge or documentary? I don't recalll..

SI is already in Jersey, it can’t be compared to any of the other boroughs, that’s why it isn’t one.
Brooklyn is known for Brooklyn Bridge not Varrazono
@@warrcoww6717 also Staten island is definitely one of the five boroughs
Brooklyn
Bronx
Manhattan
Queens

HER STORY OF HISTORY OF THE BUILDING OF THE VERRAZANO BRIDGE IS FLAWLESS.
HEY ANNETTE, CAN YOU DIG IT? I KNEW THAT YOU COULD.
Official name: VERRAZZANO-NARROWS BRIDGE, not "Verrazano"
