Thanks for some great ideas. You and several other 5th Gen 4Runner owners on UA-cam have provided real inspiration for this old guy. I just got back from northern Wisconsin a few hours ago and averaged 20.8 MPG. Spent time in a remote spongey, muddy field to test the WiFi hot spot but the Multi-Terrain was a big help in 4WD.
IMO there a tons of car review channels but not with certain goals for the car. A car review channel that shows the pros/cons of car camping or overlanding is a fresh take on something being outdone. Started watching because of the 4Runner but if this the direction it's going, 100% here for it.
As a new 4Runner owner I found your content as I was researching the vehicle and fell in love. I am happy you are branching out and finding happiness. As for blind spot monitors, I have a 2022 4Runner off road and it does have blind spot monitors now!
The Highlander may or may not have the automatic parking brake set. Also the 'Check Rear Seat' message is a safety/reminder feature for the driver to check for rear seat passengers (such as babies/children/pets) in case they forget they are there . If you open/close the rear door(s) then start the car - the next time you turn it off will display the message. Enjoying the content. I have a '17 TRDOR 4Runner.
Folks that camp out in Toyota hybrids often leave the HVAC on all night (see hotel Prius videos). Also some upper trims of the highlander hybrids come with a 110 volt 1500 watt outlet that can be used for cooking.
How much gas does a Highlander use if left on all night for climate control? I realize that it is different for heating vs. cooling. I currently camp in a Prius and I am thinking about getting a hybrid Highlander.

Is that highlander a 4wd? If so I would get that instead of the 4runner. Just remove the seats and put a flat piece of wood. I always believed that your setup would get tired some at one point cus its to much work, ive been watching your channel a lot. I think you should get a tundra hybrid 4wd and remove the bed and put a over the head box or keep the bed and make an over the head camper, that way you have a bed at the top and you have everything else at the bottom without moving so many things. Thats if you want to do full time, like me I do part time and i just have a tacoma with a high roof shell. You make great videos, dont be too hard on yourself, keep pumping out content.
Found your channel because of the 4Runner, but figure out your creative direction and what makes you happy. Always good to have a destination or adventure for the video. Also check out some of venture4wd old videos, he was always good at creating a story for adventure. My 22 4Runner ORP has the blindspot monitoring!
I like your video but..... as a former Guide and Paramedic. I have to say burning a canister stove in a confined space, well never a good idea. Unless you're in the back country and weather forces you to do so but then you still have to vent your tent. And positioning your stove right next to you on the center console. And I understood that you were making pasta which requires boiling water. It seems young people never seem to think about a "worst case scenario" because no one ever thinks they're going to be a victim either. But a burn from boiling water is an injury that creates a pain level you can't imagine. So, if somehow you did knock that pot off onto your side of the console, well you have nowhere to go sitting inside. You wouldn't be able to move fast enough. Food for thought. Would just hate for something avoidable to ruin your quest.
Do what Mav does-he changes it up a lot and is super successful with his channel. Whatever you do, do it for yourself! :) P.S. I start my own 4Runner adventure full time in June. I’ve really enjoyed all of your videos, it’s given me a lot of inspiration and motivation to do it.
Funny. I'm setting up my 2021 Highlander Hybrid for a nomad life. I took out both the 2nd and 3rd row seats. I'm in the process of building a bed platform because of the big slope. There's a lot of space once the seats are removed. I also removed the Qi charger in the center console. No need for it. I also got a Thule Pulse roof box. As for gas mileage, I'm getting around 40 mpg in the summer and around 28 in the winter for an average of around 36 mpg.
I agree but I think of it as maybe a VRBO type stay. I feel you are maintaining your integrity either way. I wish you well with your decision either way.
If you don't mind listening to a stranger's opinion; make the videos that you want. There are multiple reasons why. The starter is that you will enjoy it more. The more you enjoy it the more effort you will put into it. The more you do that the higher quality videos you make. That translates into what we, the viewers, see. Ultimately the more you enjoy the videos you make the better it is for the viewer thereby the more viewers you will pull in. Whatever direction you go I wish you the best of luck. I used to live across the river from St. Louis. My dad was stationed at Scott for years before we moved away. We moved about 20 years ago. I've been through the area a few times since as heading to my grandmother's home in Minnesota requires me going by. The next time I get the chance to go through the area I want to try to make a few stops for memories sake. I won't ask for you to join me but would you mind if I asked you questions in the future should I get the opportunity to make the trip?
Comparing the gas mileage to the 4runner is not going to be accurate, obviously the 4runner runs on gas all the time it's running, but for the Hybrid, it depends on how that vehicle is set up. Does the car start and run on batteries( which will have to be charged) and the gas engine just starts to charge the batteries only and or does the gas engine start and run the car and charge the batteries when they are low. Does the gas engine kick in at any other time the vehicle is moving? So there are different variables on the hybrid, so of course it is going to have better gas mileage.
Been thinking of getting one. I make decent money doing gig work full time and having one of these would save me a ton of money. That and I hate throwing away over $1300-2000 a month for a one bedroom apartment I'm barely at.
Found your channel bc of the 4runner as I own a 21 TRD OR. People buy these not for the mpg but for what it’s capable of. They are built in Japan - solid. Keep pumping out contents. Cheers !
Thank you! :) I definitely agree and disagree. I think for some folks, especially with gas now, the mpgs are considered a bit more than in the past. It would depend on how they want to use it. I could’ve gotten away with using the highlander everywhere I went this past year, even the 4x4 roads. I didn’t do any serious off-roading. Would I give up my 4Runner though… NOPE!

The rear seats slope because the hybrid batteries are under it. Best way I found to 'flatten' the floor is to build up the back on the side which I'll be sleeping with those square interlocking pads until it is mostly flat. Then a few roll-up camping pads to smooth it out.
Such an enjoyable post. You made me laugh and cringe (the sympathy cringe when the pasta made a run for it.). I think any old person would agree with me when I say, the content doesn't matter when YOU are having fun. The more fun you have the more fun we have watching your vids. Kudos.

Probably the main advantage of the Highlander hybrid over the 4Rrunner would be the climate control system that you can run all night.

The hybrids actually gets the best gas mileage in the city because the electric motor is running most the time.
