I read a comment somewhere that said “Reading is just staring at a piece of paper with ink on it and hallucinating” thought that was kind of an interesting way to put it.
I have only Dune for my April TBR. I finally got to it and I'm about 200 pages in and it's phenomenal! I was also in a huge reading slump in March and I just said screw my plans let's read something I wanted to read for ages and I finally picked up Dune and it was the best decision for me. Dune is gonna be a great journey, I'm sure of it
I April TBR is going to be The Fellowship of the Ring (re-read), The Call of Cthulhu (H. P. Lovecraft), The Scarlet Citadel (Robert E. Howard), The Shadow of the Torturer (Gene Wolfe), Death Mask (Jim Butcher) and The Emerald Storm (Michael J. Sullivan).
Back to the Expanse- Babylon ashes, Empire of the vampire, Famous for my Blake Crouch pallet cleanser, and I am reading my daughter, the lion the witch and the wardrobe. Then probably starting Persepolis Rising.
The Lonesome Dove squeals doesn't capture the magic of Lonesome Dove but they're still good. Recently finished Comanche Moon good book with top notch prose from McMurtry.
Good on you for listening to the mood and reassassing what you are craving right now to get back that reading mojo!! I hope The War for the Rose Throne series ends on a high note for you, I loved it myself! Happy reading ☺
For March into April I’m finishing up The Hero of Ages and Empire of the Damned. Once I’m done with those, I’m finally starting The Bound and Broken (I might be able to get through Of Darkness and Light), very excited about getting into that series. And in between books 1 and 2 I’m reading the Sword of Kaigen and after book 2 I’m reading the Song of Achilles.
glad you are shaking up the tbr to get out of the slump. nothing wrong with changing some batting orders! I'm certain I'll be reading Streets of Laredo this summer.
nice, mike, i also want to read The Dreamcather! i will also enjoy some of Mr. King's work, starting with From a Buick 8 and i'm also watching Salem's Lot (1979) as we speak! you also got me into Blake Crouch, as the last book i've finished was Wayward Pines; thank you for doing what you do
April is all about The Bound And The Broken for me. Books 2 and 3 plus The Exile and The Ice .. i may try to squeeze in either Deadhouse Gates or Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse if I have time as well.
That list makes perfect sense to get out of a reading slump. I hope your mood is improved enough for the Sun Eater when you get to it, Mike. I really got to read more Blake Crouch (only read Recursion so far) and King (only read The Shining). I've got a few of King's in here, might read some of it after I'm finished with Malazan. My April is going to be a very exciting one, I think. I've only got 1 book planned, and that's The Crippled God. If everything goes right (meaning: I can keep up my rythm with Dust of Dreams, which has been great), I think I can start it in the first week of April, and maybe I can finish it in April, maybe not, but it doesn't matter. I'm very happy either way
Dream catcher is my first Stephen King I loved the movie I still quote it I still sing the song all the time, the book was good. I felt it was a good like dip in the pool. I did like the shining more but I'm still working through most of kings works slowly and I hope you still like it cause I can't be the only one
Really appreciate the videos Mike. I've read so many great books this past year because of your videos. Can't thank you enough for exposing me to Joe Abercrombie. Now I just finished lonesome dove... next is shogun 👍
Good reminder to "Get out of Your Comfort Zone" or Switch Genre to get out of a slump. I will use that myself in April to help me get back into reading more. Best of luck to you Mike. Sounds like you got a great month ahead. I am planing to read book 3 of 'Way of Edan', finish "Small Gods" and mix things up to try and get out of the slump I am in. Thanks.
Gonna be finishing up the Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff in early April. Real big fan of his now. Thanks for the recommendation, Mike! Also looking forward to finishing the Expanse. Enjoy your reads, good sir!
Streets of Laredo is great, it’s not quite as epic as Lonesome Dove but if anything the characterisation is even better. The main villain is an all timer.
I'm feeling a bit the same way with vintage sci fi. I'll be choosing my April tbr this evening, im planning to hit up the more recent books on my shelves. I haven't read Dark Matter, perhaps that should be among my palate cleansers. Cheers Mike. 👍
I loved Dreamcatcher. “Bacon!!” I am listening to The Tombs of Autuan, book 2 of Earthsea and The Ship of Magic. Boy, Liveship Traders is fabulous, the story took off for me once Athlea was introduced.
Finishing up Towers of Midnight this week and will start Memory of Light on the 1st! It’s going to be a sad day when I come to the end of that journey but so excited for time to read some other big series now! (John Gwynne perhaps!?)
I’m going to end up taking Shogun into April, not read it much in March. I think it’s great but very heavy so don’t mind if it takes a while. Only read Dark Matter by Crouch but Snowbound actually sounds really interesting. Tbh I’ve not thought about Dreamcatcher much, had no idea what it was about but sounds good and definitely has IT vibes. You keep adding to my endless list Mike 😂
I want to join you for priest of bones series in April. Hope you can get over your slump soon and get into house of assassins. Thanks Mike you’re the best
I remember liking Dreamcatcher, wasn't sure why it got so much hate. I read Lonesome Dove this year, and loved it. I want to get to the sequels but I've got so much on my TBR.
I have given up on a TBR, I just call mine a "Wish List". I wish I had the time, energy and interest to read of all these. Its good to take a break and jump around to other things, keeps thing interesting. I've got a classic going (Jane Eyre) and mystery (The Round House) and have started on a Dune re-read (audiobook this time). It's all about having fun and discovering something new. Don't forget opening day is coming soon, gotta make time for game. Go Stros!
A new read for April is up in the air. The new reads I am possibly looking at are a modern ghost story, a Vietnam War fictional recount, a gritty western, or pick up the next Dresden Files book. I decided I am going to switch back and forth between Lord of the Rings and The Dark Tower. So my reread will be The Gunslinger though the newer edition which I have never read but won't count it as new since the additions are nowhere like the later version of The Stand. The designated 'Book 3' of Shogun will continue my 6 month first read of that book.
Currently reading Sword of Kaigen, hopefully will finish before April starts. Should be reading Call of the Bone Ships and A Time of Dread. Hoping to get through all of Gwynne’s books before Fury of the Gods releases.
My April is mostly mysteries and thrillers: The Graveyard Shift (Jack Higgins), The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Agatha Christie), A Ticket to the Boneyard (Lawrence Block), A Taint in the Blood (Dana Stabenow), and Nobody Lives Forever (John Gardner, a James Bond novel). My fantasy and scifi extends to the following: Lost Tribe of the Sith and Revan-The Old Republic (Star Wars books), Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar (Edgar Rice Burroughs) and Foundation and Empire (Isaac Asimov). If time permits, I'm picking up Lonesome Dove (on your recommendation).
Hey Mike.. I have a few suggestions for ya. Both by the same author and both similar topics. The Posioners handbook and the Poison Squad by Deborah Blum. Very good books!
I finished Thawny Man Trilogy and Age of Madness. Decided to do a palet cleancer with Upgrade by Blake Crouch and since I am playin Red Dead Redemption 2, decided to shoot for Lonesome Dove :)
I do the same thing, just jump out of fantasy and scifi for a bit and have a refresh. I recently read a non-fiction called Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson and was blown away by how much of it was like reading a thriller and how sometimes I was like no way this is real, this has to be fiction. Anyway its a good one, about deep wreck divers that found a U-Boat in the early 90s and this u-boat wasn't documented anywhere, so how do they find out what it is and a lot of it is also how risky it was to dive at these over 200ft depths especially back then. Its a great almost quick read if you're really looking for something different.
Due to a recent family loss, I think I have to push «The Fort» (City of Victory Trilogy #1) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during Emperor Trajan’s Campaigns) & «After Rome» by Morgan Llywelyn (Historical Fiction set in Post-Roman Britain) back from my March TBR until April. My April TBR schedule: «The Green Pearl» (Lyonesse Trilogy #2) by Jack Vance ((Pre-)Arthurian Fantasy) «Ash: A Secret History» by Mary Gentle (Alt-Historical Military Fiction inspired by the Mercenary Wars of the Renaissance) «The City» (City of Victory Trilogy #2) by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during Emperor Trajan’s Campaigns) «Empire of Silence» (Sun Eater, #1) by Christopher Ruocchio (Space opera) «Idoru» by William Gibson (Cyberpunk) «Kings of the Wyld» by Nicholas Eames (Fantasy Humor)
I know I dragged Dreamcatcher back in the day. But to be fair, I was just out of high school when I read it and had a bias against early 2000s King (Buick 8, Cell, etc...) I just may give it a new try since I've came a long way since
I've got two books that need to go back to the library within a couple of days and no idea what comes next. Want to read Empire Of The Damned, and the library showed it in stock briefly, but now it's not listed there at all, so... Lest one falls further into demotivation, since trying to pick up the next thing is the worst.
My reading plans for April: Finishing Children of Dune The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu An Introduction to Modern Cosmology by Andrew Liddle Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff
I am in a terrible reading slump myself. i was fully focused on empire of silence and then i just completely fell off of it for no reason. I'm attempting to read 11/22/63 now to try and dig my way out, but I'm not sure if it's going to help😅 I've been buying too many books lately, i think that's the problem, every time i get a new one, the grass always seems greener on the other side and i don't know why. I have a terrible commitment problem with new series that i try because they're just not what I've read before (obviously) and i have the fear of being let down by the new series or standalone i Guess. (Im thinking too much about it😅)
I don't know what I'm reading next month I know I have a few in progress that I cud pick up one or two and Finnish or I mite pick up one of my new books I got a bunch of books this month Cindy Inbarest as to how menny
For me, I really liked RUN but about half way into Snow Bound I wasn't into it. First half was good. I havn't tried Abandon, yet. Also, Summer Frost from Forward Collection was good too.
All I remember about Dreamcatcher is the alien eating a bacon sandwich was made to sound disgusting haha I will have to re read that one Snow bound sounds good I have the first sun eater book to start Have you watched 3 body problem what do you think?
I think everyone in the community you have built ain’t showing up for just the SF/F and horror. We show up to hear you talk about things you love and your opinion on them. You could read lit fic for the next year and a half and we’d be along for the ride. Just be Mike and we will be here for ya amigo.
I read a comment somewhere that said “Reading is just staring at a piece of paper with ink on it and hallucinating” thought that was kind of an interesting way to put it.
Your boy King does call books a "uniquely portable magic." But he was probably high when he said it.

A massive please get well soon to Brian. I religiously watch his daily videos on my lunch break every day without fail. Love and prayers!
I wondered if something was up with Brian Because he hadn't posted in like a week And he posts something every single day usually
Every month, I always have multiple genres to read to keep me out of the slump.
I do this too. I alternate between historical fiction, fantasy, sci fi and thrillers.
@@cynthiafialka it's much better doing it that way, if you ask me
I'm one of the few people who liked Dreamcatcher. I liked the weird dynamic in the group.
Yes switching genre's is a great idea for a reading slump
I have only Dune for my April TBR. I finally got to it and I'm about 200 pages in and it's phenomenal! Currently reading 📖 American Psycho. I was thinking about The Running Man after that.
I read American Psycho in 2012 and it still haunts me.
Returning video tapes is always a good way to get through a reading slump
I April TBR is going to be The Fellowship of the Ring (re-read), The Call of Cthulhu (H. P. Lovecraft), The Scarlet Citadel (Robert E. Howard), The Shadow of the Torturer (Gene Wolfe), Death Mask (Jim Butcher) and The Emerald Storm (Michael J. Sullivan).
I’m currently reading The Alloy of Law. I’m reading all of the Cosmere books leading up to Wind and Truth’s release.
Back to the Expanse- Babylon ashes, Empire of the vampire, Famous for my Blake Crouch pallet cleanser, and I am reading my daughter, the lion the witch and the wardrobe. Then probably starting Persepolis Rising.
I think you'll enjoy Streets of Laredo
Yay Streets of Laredo!!🎉🎉🎉
I'll be rereading Gone with the Wind and maybe picking up The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara (civil war fiction).
I really hope Brian gets well soon...hopefully we will soon have some positive updates...
Nice tbr, why no horror though 😢
The Lonesome Dove squeals doesn't capture the magic of Lonesome Dove but they're still good. Recently finished Comanche Moon good book with top notch prose from McMurtry.
I'm very hesitant to read the prequels/sequels because I absolutely loved lonesome dove and how it ended
Dreamcatcher was a good read. Can't wait till you hit streets of laredo. It's going to go by faster than you think
Good on you for listening to the mood and reassassing what you are craving right now to get back that reading mojo!! I hope The War for the Rose Throne series ends on a high note for you, I loved it myself! Happy reading ☺

Merry Easter and much greetings from Türkiye Turkey♡
April looks to be a great reading month! I've been full mood reads lately and it has worked for me.
I’m definitely trying to do it more.
I also bought "Dreamcatcher" when it first came out and have yet to read it. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Crouch as a motor starter is a fine choice.
glad you are shaking up the tbr to get out of the slump. nothing wrong with changing some batting orders! I'm certain I'll be reading Streets of Laredo this summer.
Streets of Laredo is amazing!

It is very important to switch up the genres from time to time. I usually read some thrillers or a classic between all the fantasy
I know you aren't happy about the slump, but I am! I'm so excited for the Stephen King and Blake Crouch. My April TBR just changed now.
That list makes perfect sense to get out of a reading slump. I hope your mood is improved enough for the Sun Eater when you get to it, Mike.

I reached a massive slump (part of the problem was goddamn Dreamcatcher!) and my go to is crime thrillers. Always quick punchy reads
This might be a good month to read Replay by Ken Grimwood. It gives me huge Blake Crouch vibes.
Glad I wasn’t the only one who was slumping in March. The first half started out great, but the second half of the month were rough for me 😂
Btw, for suneater (I'm a recent convert) I've hit them hard, they're in the unputdownable category for me! Book 3 next...
Same here but I've got so many series on my TBR it may be a couple months b4 I get to Demon in White
I enjoyed Snowbound. 😊

The Fifth Elephant - Eaters of the Dead - Congo - Sphere - Fairy Tale
Pratchett, Crichton and my 19th book from King on the way!
Finishing up Towers of Midnight this week and will start Memory of Light on the 1st! It’s going to be a sad day when I come to the end of that journey but so excited for time to read some other big series now! (John Gwynne perhaps!?)

I never hated Dreamcatcher! There was weird stuff and gross stuff, of course, but I always liked it. It feeds into the Multiverse.

Dreamcatcher gets way more hate than it deserves. The movie is terrible and certainly doesn't do its reputation any favours.
