  • Chords are essential, we find them everywhere in the Cello repertory: Elgar Cello Concerto, Dvorak Cello Concerto,... But how to make them sound great? And in tune? There is actually no secret...find out how I do my best to make chords sound great!
The Study that I am using in today's lesson, comes from the book "Feuillard: Studies of the Young Cellist", Study No. 44 which is a Study for Chords.

Thanks Ilia - this video came at the right time. My daughter is learning "Sailing Down The River" by Aaron Minsky for the youth orchestra audition and this exercise will help her with the chords/double stop section of the piece

Tienes una manera muy peculiar para enseñar, me gusta eso. Es bueno saber que los maestros también pasan por ese proceso de desaciertos antes de llegar a la perfección. Un saludo desde República Dominicana 🤝🏽

How do you play 5th across the string using one finger? It's never in tune if I go straight across, usually have to bend the finger forwards.

Hello Ilia. Thank you so much for your vidéos and your advises. They are so encouraging. The difficulty for me is the time to devote to the feuillard studies and the score I have to work. I think the feuillard studies is a score inherently. I shoud work as many time the both. It is not possible every day. So I have the impression that I don't progress. It's probably just an impression I kwon.

Thank you so much! This is absolutely normal, it’s all about the time. Feuillard needs time, for some studies much more time. There are not easy at all. The title of the book ‘Studies of the Young Cellist’ is actually very misleading. We might think this is a book for beginners, but it’s not. Me, personally, playing the cello for more than 20 years, and it’s my life, I encounter challenges when doing these! But what you feel it’s absolutely normal, so I understand you! :-)

Do you find you end up putting some pressure on your left thumb when playing chords? Or should the thumb feel no different when playing chords vs single notes?

Good question. I'd like to know too. I'm definitely using it as counter resistance.
