An amazing songwriter with an unbelievably powerful, beautiful voice. Love Neko Case. So many songs to recommend - I second the Deep Red Bells suggestion.
Third 😁
That feral Contralto!!!
You need to check out something from her album Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. It's a masterpiece
Thanks for the suggestion Delicate Gee!
Neko started as a teen playing drums in Tacoma area pop and punk bands. In the early to mid 1990s she recorded with Canadian pop/punk bands Cub (drums) and Maow (drums/vocals). Her first solo album (as "Neko Case and her Boyfriends") was fairly pure old school country, although her style subsequently morphed through alt-country into indie rock. She's also been a member of Canadian Band "The New Pornographers" since 1997, and frequently collaborates with Tucson bands Giant Sand and Calexico. I could go on for paragraphs about her other collaborations and side projects, many of which are totally of the wall. The most notable is indie supergroup "Case/Lang/Veirs", with KD lang and Laura Veirs.
She’s a busy lady! We can’t wait to hear more.
The 1967 Mercury Cougar that others have mentioned was named "Angie Dickinson". About 10 years ago there was a flurry of online articles about Neko auctioning off Angie for charity, but that apparently didn't materialize until several years later. Neko also had a 1988 Dodge conversion van that she dubbed the "Ultra Beaver", which I would occasionally see driving around Tucson in the 2000s.
True slightly shaggy dog story about "Angie": Around 2004, my youngest daughter Nadia wanted me to look at a Honda she was looking at buying. As I was speaking to the owner, I pointed to the car in the driveway across the street and said "your neighbor sure has a sweet Cougar'. He replied "Oh, that's Neko Case's", like everyone in the world knew who she was. She was a core artist on KXCI-FM in Tucson and I'd been a fan for years, but my daughter asked "who's Neko Case?". I lent her my CDs, and she instantly became a mega-fan.
Fast forward a couple of months and my daughter is cashiering at Borders when Neko comes up with a giant stack of magazines (upcoming tour reading material). Nadia said she was so star-struck that all she could do was babble incoherently. Fortunately, Neko was a periodic customer up until Borders closed in 2011, so Nadia got to have plenty of intelligent conversations after that.
We think the Cougar was appropriately named ☺️. And what an awesome story for you and your daughter to tell! Thanks for watching!
Note that the car is a 1967 Mercury Cougar. Another animal reference from Ms. Case. ;)
Thanks ❤️ ☺️we were both wrong!
That car, as already mentioned, is a 67 Mercury Cougar. It shared the same underpinnings as the Mustang. I agree, those mid/late-sixties "pony cars" were great. Neko Case is a great songwriter, nice seeing her on this channel.
Glad you enjoyed Jay, thanks!
The Cougar was basically an upscale Mustang. It was intended for someone a little older or more affluent, slotting between the Mustang and the Thunderbird.
I’d like to learn about NC. This is interesting. I know she’s been around a while. That’s about it.
Love Neko !
me soooo toooo. was poor and feral and street. She/Sir is Big Medicine. She’s as wounded as any and all of us… Sweet and Angry Kali-Ma! 🩵
A genuine songwriting talent with a strong, distinct voice, and a flair for the unexpected in her lyrics - that's the quick description. Neko Case has recorded a number of solo albums over the years, while also continuing to collaborate with other songwriters and musicians in Indie-Rock bands such as the New Pornographers, The Corn Sisters and The Sadies. Her music draws from Folk, Blues, alt-Country and Art Rock influences, and can be difficult to pin down or predict, but a common lyrical motif would be her many references to wildlife and Nature - often depicting surrealist or dreamlike situations. The 2009 album "Middle Cyclone" (from which this song is taken) debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard record charts. That album would be a good place to start with her music.
In 2016, she released a collaborative album with k.d. lang and Laura Veirs, which contained a great mix of song styles and I highly recommend that album as well.
“I just want to make stories,” she has said. “They don’t have to have a moral or a reason. There might be some mild cautionary notes, but they’re not moral. They don’t impart any Judeo-Christian ethic of any kind.”
'Her other big influence, at least of late, has been Russian and Eastern European folk tales. Though she’s of Ukrainian heritage, Case says she stumbled across them just because she “likes to read.”' (from a 2009 Today Show interview)
Oh wow, thanks An Cat, this was so beautiful!
Yay! Neko! Try "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood". "Blacklisted" is also an excellent album. Try "Deep Red Bells" from that one.
Her vocals are tremendous. And her lyrics are phenomenal. DO listen to more of her!
Blessings.
Blessings Leo!
Love Deep Red Bells. Evokes mystery and nostalgia, but also a deep sadness borne from human darkness, resulting in innocence lost or even robbed.
As well as being a solo artist she is also one of the vocalists in the band New Pornographers. You should check them out.
No they shouldn't. That's when her music started to go down. she doesn't need "The New Pornographers". she's better without them.
Thanks for the tip David!
@@heavenlysonshine Respectfully, you are mistaken. Neko’s solo career and the New Pornographers began simultaneously in 1997 and she still records with them today. Her solo work is different than NP’s, and it’s to her credit that she fits seamlessly into both. Through her work with them she’s earned her place as an ‘honorary Canadian’ in our hearts. No need to diss New Pornographers and SAD absolutely should check them out. I suggest ‘Challengers’, ‘Myriad Harbour’, ‘The Bleeding Heart Show’, ‘This is the World of the Theatre’.
she is indie because she was courted by record label. Refused to sell out her master! That tornado owns her art. Ridiculously prolific. She was a throw away feral kid. Yes.. she is Talking… credited w revival of Tenor (?) guitar. She played drums in a punk band when starting out. Prolific!!! Most usually called America but no real genre except her own. Wait until you discover her catalogue. Your reactions were so spot on. Neko ain’t down with hierarchies of any type. She doesn’t like being looked AT. Her concerts are Otherworldly. Every human respecting and being kind to all others. Neko puts the Rules in the songs. Her concerts make me feel safe and protected ~ ooooh listen to “Man” if you get a chance. Blow her mind and Heart!!!
What I've always been impressed about Neko is, her voice! What a voice! Don't pretend to know what she's driving at, in this song, but it doesn't matter, she creates her characteristic atmosphere, mainly with that powerful, unique voice. Hey, I know I'm only a $5 Patron but it sure would be nice if you could get around to reviewing my Neko Case request, "Wayfaring Stranger". but thanks for this, too.
Hey Heavenly! Feel free to shoot us a message on patreon, it’s the best way to reach us :)
@@SightAfterDark Here Wayfaring Stranger cover version is a good one. More traditional, but accessible.
Her delivery is similar to yours, and the music is relentless, much like the stuff I heard the other day. Keep up the good work, both of you.
Thanks so much David, we appreciate you!

Furnace Room Lullaby
I love Neko Case. This is her greatest album in my opinion. Magpie to the Morning is phenomenal.
The car, maybe it is a little on the nose, is a Cougar.
Fox Condessor Brings The Flood is a masterpiece and a concept album.
I hope you have checked out Neko Case by now. If not, you can't go wrong, she is amazing!
More Neko 🙌
Do I detect a bit of Natalie from 10,000 Maniacs in there. I also heard The Corrs. I even heard that rad chick Sifa Graffiti in there. NICE! Had a 90s vibe IMHO. ✌❤🤘
Wow, 10,000 maniacs, yeah we can hear that
🥰thanks Billy!
