Jack, what kind of life will you guys off the boat? With no education and social skills. Isolated off the grid Van life is not the solutions for Finn..He is depressed with no purpose. Same with your parents, they cannot sail without their kids. And you kids need to carry on your own life beyond the boat...But you are not exposed to the world because you only know life on the boat and from the boat (Marinas , road trips, traveling) but there is more beyond. Friends are important and you had no chance to make long lasting relationships because you were not on land
The best part about this video is seeing your ENTIRE family rally around & drive with you all that way - just so you can fulfil your dream of being a van owner! You truly are blessed! Yeah, it might seem *cringe*, I know, but trust me, it's so beautiful to see, esp as that amount of love & support feels so foreign to me. Looking forward to your new adventures, Finn! Congratulations matey!! All the best, Robbie :)
Thanks Robbie! Im so lucky to have the family I do. Their truly an amazing group of individuals and I love em all so much. Im sorry love and support feels foreign to you Robbie. Im hoping it doesn't feel foreign for to long. Thank you brotha!
Congrats on the van. Smart choice to get one in great shape. My son and I did the opposite. He bought a 77 westfailia when he was 15 years old. We cut every rusty panel off and rebuilt from ground up. Lots of ups and downs. We had great memories and trips but after 10 years he sold it because needed a truck. Sold it for what we had in it.
Hey Finn, I've been following you for awhile...congrats on your van. I'm old now but when I was 18, I bought a 1974 Volkswagen van like yours - it was orange and white and in great condition like yours. It even had the pop up with the extra bed. I really liked it and had a lot of fun as you will too. Be safe, have fun and I'm really happy for you!
So happy for you!! I teared up thinking of how proud your parents are but also the hurt of watching their son grow up and depart the nest. So excited for your new adventures and hugs to your parents!!
I lived and traveled in an 85 Westy for many years in my early twenties and I can not stress how important that time was in my life. I have since gotten back into nomadic life in my 50's and it's a whole different world. Remember that it's about taking your time and soak in the memories, it goes by sooooo fast. I highly suggest learning to white water kayaking, it will enhance the journey in ways you will not regret. My vans name was Butters, I have never cried selling a car, I did that day.
AAAAAAHHH! This is so exciting! I'm so proud of you! I'm about to turn 18 and moving to Toronto next year for school, and it's so cool to see someone my age doing something so completely different and fun. Needless to say, I'm stoked to see where van life takes you. LESH GOOOOO!
Rodents love to get in vans, especially those left unused for months. Rodent repellant placed inside the van really helps (in tins or sachet bags). Don't forget a tin under the hood too! Nice looking home on wheels! Betty White, lesh goooo!
@@monumentmom7593 I keep my car hood up anytime the car is parked (in my garage) at my rural forested homestead. This has pretty much eliminated rodents getting in my car , along with the fragrant all natural peppermint and eucalyptus sachet bags. I also spray peppermint repellant around my car and under it once a week. No mice in over a decade since doing this.
Love the van! Very cool and suits you. Your dad will have this thing working like new. Depression is tough, one thing your video shows is the sun will shine again, so don’t lose hope. Great that you continue to be an explorer who discovers new corners of this amazing planet and shares it with the rest of us.
yep when you get to be my age you will look back and realise that life is trully like a rollar coaster theres ups and downs and you cant go through it without the sad times cause its really part of the ride so just live it and enjoy the ride buddy and the most important thing i believe with all my heart is having a unbelievably fantastic family supporting and loving each other is the most important thing there is and you have that in spades from what iv seen throughout the years
Just found your channel yesterday. As a former Seaman of the German Navy I got addicted to all those sailing videos. But I really enjoy the way you film and edit your videos. Just so awesome !
In the next couple months look for things you can use in the van. For example, hand carved wooden bowls for eating out of. Bring the island life into the van 🌴👣🌞💚
I am so, so, happy for you Finn! I remember purchasing my first vehicle, a 1972 Datsun 510. Like you I wasn't able to drive it on my own as I only had my learner permit at the time. I remember the first day I earned my driver permit, what a sense of freedom! You are truly blessed and we are blessed to share your adventures with you. ❤
Congrats on the van. You are truly blessed to have your parents. Thank them. Without them, you would not have any of this. I am excited to watch your travels. So what is your plan? Where do you plan on going once you are back from the boat?
Super cool dude!! I’m about to graduate in 2 months and I am literally stuck between: going to a college I don’t really wanna go to all the way in Massachusetts away from California (my home), go to community and be closer to home but have no idea what i wanna do, or buy a van and travel around. Being 17 you really think your life is completely gonna fall apart if you don’t figure out what you wanna do with the rest of it. Seeing this video gave me a bit of hope and maybe i’ll do the whole van thing after all 🤷🏽♀️. Happy for you and your new chapter! Will definitely be sticking around.
Blessings to you Finn. What a loving and caring folk you have surrounding you. Love the bus, drove a few, worked on a few. Rust was bad but yours looks like a gem. European style headlamps and running lamps! On the Road to Shambala for you! In the series Lost, the part I will always remember was Hurley getting the VW bus to start in the crazy way he did. Shambala! Peace!
I owned a '76 VW Westfalia - an even older version of yours. My best friend from HIgh School, my beagle and I spent a month traveling in it -- From Missoula, MT to Seattle, then down the West Coast until half our gas money was gone, then we turned around and came home. Great trip. Hope you get to enjoy it on some road trips
man I am so happy to hear you mention the Subaru engine conversion, I love the look of that van but anything from the 80s is questionable. (although they got better into the later 80s) anyhow, while you are on the boat start researching and learning that engine. You're pretty sharp I am sure you will be able to resolve most issues that may pop up. hope I see ya driving around some day in my neck of the woods. Lesh go!
Congrats Fin! I am not going to Bozeman because it’s too cold but it’s just as cold where I am heading in northern ID. Maybe we will see you over the road! I’m pulling a TAB320 in my Ford Explorer after camping in my Explorer for a stretch. .. living the life. Be safe.
Pro tip on 2.5 engine problem prevention or minimization: As a former Subaru fan, that engine's achiles heel is its head gaskets. The OEM gaskets are prone to go out between 60-80K miles and run between $2200 - $2800 to replace. I've heard, and you may want to doublecheck, that the OEM material was designed and intended to be used with synthetic oil, natural oil degrades the life of it. If your engine temp spikes and then drops radomly, 99% of the time it's the headgaskets--not the water pump, radiator or thermostat. Many good non-Subaru mechanics misdiagnose this and you'll waste money fixing the wrong thing. And if you ever do need to replace the headgaskets get all steel or metal ones, they're not much more expensive. BUT if you're going to get it done, spend the extra money to have the heads resurfaced. With metal headgaskets and resurfaced heads and you should never have issues with the head gaskets again. Lastly. MAKE SURE you change the timing belt every 60k - 90k and replace all your bearing and pullys every other change at a minimum. If that goes out it will destroy the engine (Subaru owner know this, but since it's not a Subaru, I don't know what you or the former owner knows of 2.5 Subie engines.. Besides that, the 2.5 is a great and long-lasting engine that is easily capable of 350k miles if you know it's needs and weekness. I loved the 2.2, but after trial and error of learning and two head gasket replacements, granted the 2nd was at 185k, I lost my love of Subies with the 2.5. Hopefully sharing what I learned through my pains may prevent, or at the very least mnimize, yours.
Hey Finn, Congrats on your van! My first car was a International ‘56 Travelall , like a miniature school buss, I drove that from MN to WA with my cat, loved every moment with it . I had bleu shag carpet and a kick ass stereo system, I got to say, my girlfriends did push it a lot to get it started. It was a great adventure almost 45 years ago, Good luck young man 🤙
Freedom, that’s the moral of this story. You guys have the freedoms to drive from one place to another, to another to another. I’ve never taken a road trip with family and aren’t as close with mine like you guys! Work gets in the way a lot and pulls us in different directions. Thanks for the video. I’m 42 I’m happy to watch your family on all its journeys on zattara, and now on the road. My wife and I are buying a Skokie to convert. I’m done in 3 yrs selling my house and traveling America. Life’s too short
Love that you're finding your own way to find out more about who you are. remember your comforts thooo, top to bottom water-seal, and insulate it. it looks very clean and kept, but definitely check every seam and door seal. No shame at all in asking dad for some help, but don't let him do it, have him watching and giving tips and helpful instruction along the way. Sounds like a great learning experience and forever bonding memories. Good Luck
Congratulations Finn! I can’t believe that just years back I was watching you get on the boat and now you are grown and getting ready to start your own adventure. I’m getting OLD 😅. Happy for you and can’t wait to see where you start.❤❤
Awesome video! I felt the same way when I bought my 85 Westy. Everything you described is on point, the excitement of having your own space and the feeling of owning a VW Van. You definitely seem to get it. Sweet van, favorite video yet. SeaBass Van is also pretty Rad! Same color/year as mine!
So exciting! At least now you have it ready & waiting as soon as you get back off the boat and license sorted. Betty looks tidy and much better than the first van. Looking forward to the van vlogs. I'd LOVE to van tour around the US !
Congratulations! I know you're going to love van life and we can't wait to see your videos. I highly recommend getting a journal or field notes to keep a log of your journeys.
I had a 1995 eurovan. I loved her so much. She was perfect except when she wasn’t and really it wasn’t anything somebody with some knowledge couldn’t keep up with. But I don’t have any mechanical skills although I did learn a lot, I just couldn’t afford the fixes. And as an older woman being solo it scared me to go too far off road, where I wanted to go. I did keep her and every trip was special and sleeping inside the van was the best sleep. Hearing the rain, feeling the wind whish and gently shake. There is a cult following for these vans. A certain type of person becomes an aficionado and it is common to use the peace sign passing each other on the road. You will love this van Finn. You might never sell it.
I couldn't stop smiling when you guys were playing Neil Young on the road trip, it's literally so nostalgic. Whole video is so awesome though, I can't wait to follow along with your van life!
I am so happy for you. I've been a subscriber of Zatara from right after the start. From a video perspective I watched all of you grow up. the three you you have done well. Please keep making videos.
From someone who also dreams of van life, it is so cool to see you really make it happen. Excited to watch your journey and love the energy behind your videos
Love the enthusiasm, Finn. I live in a small class c, and recently bought an abundance. Love living the van life, it's not for everyone but it's freedom. Got to hit the southwest, probably the best area weather wise year round. The He Pacific NW is the most beautiful area of the U.S. but too crowded for me. Best of luck, can't wait to see what you do next.
happy for you bro, you changed my thought of life i am just in high school but i also want to explore the world on a sailboat when im having exchange year and i love your personality and videos. good luck in the van !!
I recently discovered your channel and enjoyed lots of old videos on the boat. Van life suits you, and I hope this chapter of your life unfolds how you want it to.
I love and can't get over how amazing it is to me that your family is so close and supportive of each other and your dreams! It is amazing to me how you guys are so inseparable and are able to just have fun together! I love your videos so much and keep up the good work! ❤
Yeeah... I worry. I'm worried about the same thing most people are probably going to worry about but with the amount of miles you intend to and will ultimately be putting on this already high mileage van, you will ultimately break down and my only hope is that it isn't a major drive train breakdown. Congrats though. I'm glad you're happy with it and I pray it serves you well. Happy travels!
Congratulations on the van purchase! 🎉 living vicariously through you right now… wish I would have done something like this when I was younger! Enjoy the van life my man, you’ve got the whole world in front of you, enjoy every moment!
Congratulations on getting your first vehicle and your first home ! Looking forward to watching your channel to see where you go in your van! Have a good week!
Hey Finn ....I'm a VW Vanagon GL ownerfor decades ...had a 4spd 2L 86 ....get a standard shift if possible cause the wassserboxer eng is well -underpowered ...my friend has an auto-matic though . ...don't make her /it suffer 3600rpm /100kms .Love Sailing Zatara , and hope that eng swap that Keith did { Volvo --- Yanmar ) fits in there. Oh yes , I wanted a VW diesel eng , but settled on gas . The shop manual for those Vanagons is called Bentley ...fun fact VW bought Bentley, the UK auto maker ...stay safe and have fun y'all !!! The best sleep ever is in the Vanagon !! fun fact , Vanagons engines were air - cooled fro 80 to 83 ....the best , Erichi.
Finn, I'm so proud of you. Congrats on the van. I will tell you I noticed on the ride up from Texas to Big Mo, that Kate wasn't in the car. I immediately thhought you and Jack had tied her up and put her under the tarp out back! Please tell us she flew to Mo!
Finn, you were born to be an entertainer. My first car was a 63 VW bug. My second was a 61 VW bus, with the same 40 hp motor in it. Felt line roof, fold out bed, and 60 mph with a tailwind. Now that was an adventure. Congrats on the Vanagon. Got my bus beat by miles in functionality and practicality, but I think I still had the edge in character. Can't wait to see where life takes you as you roll on down the road.
I caaaant wait for this new chapter of your channel😄 I’ve alllways been obsessed with van life and now that my favorite UA-camr is doing it do is awesome!! Lesh gooooo
Finn in this video you eventually show the phone number of the person who sells vans. I can see every number of the phone, it may be bad for the owner's of the phone
Your best video to date!! Awesome job Finn, you got your van and it couldn’t be more perfect. You are so adorable with your goofy faces and sense of humor, and so comfortable in front of the camera. Also loved your music in this video. Another amazing talent you have!!!
I’ll be following you along your journey! That’s so awesome! Love the fan! Hope you get to see some cool things and meet some cool people! Be safe and cautious!
You did good, son… My love affair with the Westfalia started when I was just your age when I bought my first one. It was a ‘61 and I drove it for 5 years and sold it for a regular car that could do more than 59 miles per hour. I regretted selling it so much that I would have dreams about it, and the dreams were I still owned it but forgot where I had parked it. The dreams would persist till I finally bought another one in ‘89; it was a ‘82 Brown 1.6L diesel one that that was definitely trying to drive here in the States… However, it was perfect for Baja and drove it like that till I’d had enough and I installed a 1.9L turbo diesel. It turned that “Tortuga” into a “Canejo” real quick. I went all over Baja, and Mexico in it and gave it to my oldest son once I could no longer drive it. So, the dream lives on. That Subaru conversion is a great cure for the 1.8L gas engine that it came with, especially since it had an automatic. Enjoy, Finn.
Great video! Like your van, it will be great for your traveling! Glad you found one in good shape as well as upgraded too! You won’t average any problem getting your license! Enjoy your trip back to the boat and the Caribbean! I am looking forward to your future videos and adventures!
Van life is a dream of mine too & has been for a long time. I look forward to seeing your upcoming adventures. Congratulations Finn, time will fly by & your 18th will be here in no time.🤗🏴
There is nothing like the feeling you will enjoy with all the first you are and will experience with the first vehicle you can call your own. Congratulations and wow you are a brave young man. I moved across the country from Buffalo to New Orleans at age 18 and it was the most exciting time of my life. Eat up every moment of a life you are already living like most people dream of. Keep letting all of us ride along with you for a while. You have a talent as a story teller. Bless you.
Leshgoo!! Can't wait for the new chapter Finn. I'm proud of you brother :)

Pro tip on 2.5 engine problem prevention or minimization:
As a former Subaru fan, that engine's achiles heel is its head gaskets.
Such a nice family. How fortunate you all are.

A certain type of person becomes an aficionado and it is common to use the peace sign passing each other on the road. You will love this van Finn. You might never sell it.
So happy for you Finn, it's cool to watch your dreams come together!
I couldn't stop smiling when you guys were playing Neil Young on the road trip, it's literally so nostalgic. Whole video is so awesome though, I can't wait to follow along with your van life!

Your van is beautiful, Finn! Congrats crazy dude!
Happy Easter ✝️
Congratulations Finn! Proud of you!😊
Love the enthusiasm, Finn. I live in a small class c, and recently bought an abundance. Love living the van life, it's not for everyone but it's freedom. Got to hit the southwest, probably the best area weather wise year round. The He Pacific NW is the most beautiful area of the U.S. but too crowded for me. Best of luck, can't wait to see what you do next.
love the way the whole fam is just so happy for you. congrats Finn its gonna be such a cool adventure

In the meantime enjoy your other adventures. ⛵
yoo! stoked for the new video, I'm hoping to get into vanlife myself so this is super awesome to see
Yeeah... Happy travels!
im in love with the idea of being this adventurous and source full ❤
Congratulations on the van purchase! 🎉 living vicariously through you right now… wish I would have done something like this when I was younger! Enjoy the van life my man, you’ve got the whole world in front of you, enjoy every moment!

Finn congrats on the cool van and chasing your dreams, thanks for sharing your journey.
Your singing is sounding good bro, also sweet Taylor guitar!
The best sleep ever is in the Vanagon !! fun fact , Vanagons engines were air - cooled fro 80 to 83 ....the best , Erichi.
yesss! really stoked to see all the thins coming! ❤
Finn, I'm so proud of you. Congrats on the van. I will tell you I noticed on the ride up from Texas to Big Mo, that Kate wasn't in the car. I immediately thhought you and Jack had tied her up and put her under the tarp out back! Please tell us she flew to Mo!
Congrats on the van!
Lesh gooooo

Momentous days ahead - will enjoy being on the journey with you, via video. Godspeed!
Finn in this video you eventually show the phone number of the person who sells vans. I can see every number of the phone, it may be bad for the owner's of the phone
thank you for pointing that out, his phone was blowing up like crazy
@@henrygreer610 yes, I wrote it for Finn to delete and reload video without the phone number
I love the adventures of Finn..He talks like a Stoner..🧐hmm lol puff puff pass bro lol
Your best video to date!! Awesome job Finn, you got your van and it couldn’t be more perfect. You are so adorable with your goofy faces and sense of humor, and so comfortable in front of the camera. Also loved your music in this video. Another amazing talent you have!!!
Time for a new intro
Congratulations Finn!!! It is a great van to start with. Looking forward to your adventures😄🙌🏼
Congrats on the new van ...My Grandfather had the same one he traveled across Canada and USA . He put a lot of miles on his van it never let him down
Van life is a dream of mine too & has been for a long time.
Bless you.
