- John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to South Central Los Angeles to share with you an urban permaculture food forest in the middle of the city. In this episode you will learn about Ron Finley's food forest he created to create community and make food more available in a food desert. After watching this episode you will discover some unique edible foods you can grow in Southern California or wherever you live.
Ron's TED talk was how I got to know his work. It was sent to me by a viewer!
You can watch Ron Finley's TED talk at:
• Ron Finley: An unlikel...
Now that we are in the midst of this pandemic, these sources of free food are more important than ever. I hate seeing so many people lining up at food banks. We should have food growing at more public spaces. I'm sure Ron Finley is in more demand than ever now. Good for you Ron!
Sarah Flanagan yeah ABC made a video on it
Yea during pandemic and western wildfire I grew a garden for my neighbor. It was great spiritual medicine for my soul. Growing and sharing food, then harvesting! We made some great pesto and salsas. Perhaps this will catch on in more places. It should be shared wildly because I made great new relationships and new friends over peppers, herbs, tomatoes and cucumbers. Sharing food was such a joy for all. Nobody starved!
I am a big fan of Ron Finley. I want to see what he is doing in every city on the planet.
Blessings Ron Finley for bringing us back to Eden!
Ron's rule "Don't ask to interview me or ask to talk to me, come to me with a shovel and prepare to get dirty. That's how I communicate."
I'm so excited to see you in our area at my friends house. As a life long resident of the same area please note that WE ARE NOT SOUTH CENTRAL. This whole area is part of MID CITY LA. So Central doesn't start until south of Slauson closer to Vermont.
Also of interest is that this whole project has been in defiance of LA city ordinances defining what is legal in the causeway strip. He has had to go to battle against the city for our rights. Thank you Ron!
I apologize for the mis-information in my video. I was going off Ron's TED talk that he talked about South Central LA and thought he was located there. I will correct this in future videos. I encourage other viewers to watch Rons TED talk at:

Are you going to interview Ron at any time? It would be a great interview.
Ron Finley would have been a much better choice than this clown!
Thrifted and Talented
Clown, really? He’s one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable gardeners around. He’s done a tremendous service by his many videos about gardening, and how to keep healthy through lifestyle instead of being sick and ending up in the toxic, overpriced, overburdened health care system. We could use a lot more people like John.
@@Raina430 Ron Finely is infinitely better! Take his class on the MasterClass app if you can afford to and find out why!
Thrifted and Talented with his experience he too should pay it forward the way Ron Finley did.
@@Loki8625 Why does it have to be mutually exclusive? Is there a reason why more than one person cannot be respected for what they do? This isn't a competition, it's a community. Both John and Ron have done great things for the gardening community and should be respected for what they do.
I think this is a beautiful garden. A wonderful message to the next generation. I also watched the Ron's TED talk video. Did he and others plant gardens on their property as well or are they only planting on city property. I hope home gardening spreads all over the nation and the world!
This is by far the best video you have ever made....god bless mr finley
Omg You're my hero this is my hometown. Thanks for visiting. John you rock!
Merry Christmas John! Have a great Christmas!
Food Deserts to Food Forests. Ron Finley. Great video. Thanks 🌿🌿🌱🍏🍆
Happy Holidays John! love your vids---
I am going to do it! Thanks for your inspiration John.
He did really great fair play to him.
there really is so much land all around the place.
this food garden he made seems to fit in really well in the area also and that's great.
Happy Holidays John!!!
Merry Christmas John!!
THANK YOU FORALL THE GREAT INFORMATION ALL THE FOOD IS AMAZIBG
First! Happy Holidays to All! I enjoyed filming this episode. Stay tuned for a few more awesome videos in Southern California while I was on vacation.
Awesome!
LOVE, LOVE,LOVE this!
What a great gift you have given us with this and all of your other wonderful videos, John! Thank you.
I am interested in growing tree collards here in New Jersey. Do you know of any sources in NY/NJ for tree collard plants?
That's beautiful.
Great John. Happy Organic loves watching your videos. Seasons Greetings!
Happy Holidays John! I've been planning raised beds for my upcoming backyard farm and now also thinking of adding a strip of lawn as a dogrun at one end. My yard is east facing so the sun will mostly be in NE during summers and SE in winters, another problem is going to be water shortage. Here in India winters are mild while summer will be scorching...
Most of the compost he uses is free city mulch offered by LA. He compost home waste and collected waste (coffee grounds, plant materials etc) and collects rainwater. Many of his plants are started from seeds or donated. The brick walk paths are not only for access to the garden but to fulfill a city requirement for car access to sidewalk. And mayb we are Central LA but we r not South. Never even heard of that til the uprisings. Thanks John! check out the Post n Beam @ BH mall. They have a garden
I just discovered Ron Finley and sure enough, the man, the legend, John aka GYG has done a video on him. :)
Ur the best bro!!
i am glad you mentioned that. i wondered how the city felt about this project. that's a shame.
Hi John, Thank you so much for your videos! I moved here 2 years ago, and would love the information for Centro's nursery? TY
I love you Ron Finley!
most of them stay at higher altitudes, plus the plant's roots system does an amazing job filtrating the water
We have the same issue here in Australia the council own the side walk but we have to maintain it grow some veggies and herbs and fruit instead of lawn
I love my pineapple sage for tea infusions or the occasional cocktail garnish 💚🙏
If you do a street view on Google map-3400 S. Chesapeake Ave, L.A- It shows a man actually doing some of the plantings in this particular "food forest". Kind of interesting.
I heard that the govt gave Ron a hard time for starting this. I find it disturbing that the govt doesn’t like us cultivating our own produce, harnessing our own power or collecting rain water. I think that says a lot of our greedy govt. Great video thank you for bringing attention to this awesome urban project 👍🏾✌🏾
Even just planting drought tolerant trees and/or a groundcover that does not require watering or mowing - would help cool the city, reduce water issues, pollution, etc. In that area, it seems rain gardens would be a great idea- attractive landscaping that directs rainfall into 'storage' areas under the surface of the ground, or shallow 'ponds' covered with mulch... so there is more moisture available to the plants during the hot, dry months - without watering or irrigation. Check it out.
There's a great documentary titled "The Garden" about a community garden which, I think, was located in that part of LA.
A "must see".......
I wasn't talking about water filtration, I was talking about the residue from vehicle exhaust getting on the plants.
I live here in Long Beach CA and I must say, so much of the growing space is wasted on nonsense that cant do much for ya, BUT at the same time watering stuff during the summer must be at least a few hundred a month. Its money well spent tho, especially if ur like me and waste money on other hobbies in the hundreds. Growing out your space with beneficial fruit trees and biomes is definitely fulfilling.
John I whatch your videos all the time.first time commenting,ur in my hood.ha ha
Another awesome video, John. I have a question for you. If I lay cardbpard down, beneath wood chips, is there. any chance the cardboard will attract termites?
here from his master class ads
f Wang Me too! I’m hooked on this gangsta gardener! Great job Ron Finley!
Fantastic. Urban farming is the way to go.Zero mile food. From one report I got ,15% of what we now eat is urban grown. We need more of these especially is lower income districts where people tend to eat junk foods and fast foods or don't even eat enough.
no mow lawn, sage is awesome in temperate ,easy food in winter pine apple guava .dont know bout soil makin but anti freeze yeah you will never get sick
Thanks! What salad did you eat on 7:39 minutes?
John check out Save The Farm documentary, the only and biggest farm in south central.
I'd be sure to test soil next to a street, as here might be high amounts of lead in that soil from decades of leaded gas fumes.
no sweat. I just have to defend my neighborhood. 2nd generation Angeleno I'm kinda intense about this stuff. Try the Post and Beam behind the Baldwin Hills mall. They have a garden onsite.
Woh. That pomegranate had a lot of leaves for it being in December. All my leaves are almost gone.
John what was the name of the nursery you got the tree collards from?
Hi John,
How do you spell your last name as I can't find it anywhere here? How do you spell "tree Colla"?I am a newbie to growing anything but start to learn. Please help. With many thanks to all your You tube videos.I've learned a lot from them.
Did you try to meet Ron Finley? Is he hard to get a hold of? Who maintains these gardens and is this particular one Finley's? The videos I've seen on him haven't explained how things work. Apropos, I like the way you always pick and eat things. This is the way it should be.
Hey, whats your opinion on mini variety of vegetables such as Broccoli,Cauliflower,Cabbage, Spinach, Lettuce, Carrot, Beets and Pumpkin
John you're brave. Not so much being in South LA, but, you're eating greens that a doggie could've marked on, lol. Anyway, great thing that Ron Finley has got going on. Fabulous.
FYI - Centrose Nursery is closed down
It may just be me but when he picked some things to eat, I thought 'ewwwwww, someone might've urinated on those plants'...some people do disgusting things like that.
The food you get from grocery stores are 10 times worst even if it is organic .
@@nureshmihassim1759 why are vegetables from a grocer 10 times worse? I know that what I grow in a garden is much better than what I get from grocery stores. Whether I grow vegetables myself or buy them from a grocery store I wash them thoroughly. The garden that's seen in this video is great but I wouldn't eat anything from it without washing it first. This garden is out in the open in a busy neighborhood and some people are just disgusting and they'll do all kinds of things whether they just don't care or they're just being mean. When I saw the man picking and eating straight from the garden I was thinking 'No! Don't eat it now...wash it first'.
La has a great climate. Why would plants have trouble?
Yeah, the critters come out at night. Calif is one of the largest producing produce states in the US and they can’t get it. Hard to believe.
I wish I could grow something on my little strip of city land which is about 1/2 the size of that one. But between the gophers and the skateboarders I don't think I stand a chance.
When in Los Angeles try NATIVE FOODS, TRUE FOOD KITCHEN, SAGE ORGANIC BISTRO

a near drive-by
The legal aspecft is interesting. In the United States of America, the gov't is supposed to be 'of the People, by the People, for the People' (and that means real people, not corporations). The 'City' or the 'State' or the Federal gov't - those are not supposed to be entities separate from 'the People'. One would think that gov'ts have more important things to do with the People's tax dollars than hassle the citizenry (or non-citizen residents) re what they are growing - espec when it's food.
Wheres Ron?
plant heaps for everyone stack the mass and build
I love it!
what do you know about curly dock? the livestock wont eat it, is it poison to people? if not can the whole plant, seeds roots stalk leaves be eaten? that stuff is all over my place and its tough to kill.
I love the idea and incorporate it in my enclosed yard .....but what about heavy metals from cars and run off from other peoples yards. I would not put food out there.
Linda: Remember, you ore breathing those exhaust fumes, brake linings. fuel vapors, etc. And you live in L.A. where the air is a viscous fluid. :-O
I grew up in South Central LA and I never experienced a drive-by or saw drug exchanges until I attended a private, mostly white university. My parents are professionals and business owners as are many others in the neighborhood. To the narrator/content creator, the ignorance and insults about the community which you were highlighting was needlessly offensive and disrespectful to Ron Finley and the community.
Wouldn't the emissions from vehicles taint the vegetables?
Technically the home owner owns that. The city has jurisdiction over it.
Eew eating food off the street without washing it? With all the cars blowing nasty emissions straight onto them and all the rude people and possibly sick animals probably pissing and spitting on to them? You must have an amazing immune system and tolerance to polutants.
Ho about eating a dead animal, talk about disgusting!
For the record....
That’s not South Central. not near it!
It’s know more like “Mid City”
Simply unbelievable storyline !
I'm glad you were safe there. I'm sure you stuck out like a sore thumb. Ha !
We need more of these inspiring stories.
All this proves is that you can grow food anywhere...in LOS ANGELES
I hope you got out of the neighborhood safely!
Eww... be careful eating that stuff right off the sidewalk. I once caught someone pissing on the lawn on my sidewalk right in front of my house at night when he thought no one was watching.
Centrose Nursery see
watch?v=nNAOMHdhQdk
hummmmm people walk their dogs and dogs like to pee. People walk down the side walk and spit. Kids do dastardly things. Wouldn't you want wash your food off before you eat it. You wash store bought produce... why wouldn't you at least do that with a side walk veggie.
+wateronly and with all of that, its still healthier then what comes from markets
If you have a compromised immune system, you should definitely wash.
Randomly picking and eating someone else’s food...
Like he said, it’s open to the public
Still, I think it's disrespectful.
yeah, a dude witrh a ED talk and masterclass would probably give a f... and, also, someone who, indirectly, got his talk and masterclass by growing food for others (and encouraging ppl to pick it, as Joh mentioned in the video)...
Did anyone notice the barbed wire on the wall?
Dude shut the fuck up. Is the idea that matters. And now you're making fun of the neighborhood. Your probably racist
Dogs pee on sidewalks. People spit on sidewalks. Dangerous to eat right form the ground in an urban area lol
i dont think people would allow their dogs to do such a thing. and dogs dont urinate just anywhere. they have some sense, its why they sniff before they choose their spot and most of the time its empty areas. watch a do. now people, yeah, old ignorant ones will do such a thing on food however, we hoping folks will be more respectful since now its food growing there.
Imagine how many homeless people pissed on that arugula.
lol I was about comment that
jbgreatbend At least it's all natural piss.
Most likely the homeless are eating some sort of GMO and pissing it on the plants.
Always someone negative .So what! Wash it and eat it,it's better than what they can get in the stores there!
That's a pessimistic outlook.
Lol as someone who works throughout la the daytime comment is so real in south la 🤣🤣🤣
