*Tyler singing above high C* “It’s easy!!”
*Me breaking the octave down* 🙂
You crack me up! I've heard those pipes of yours! you are slaying man. Can't wait for the new song to be up!!!
@@tylerwysong When you are going up are you using headvoice, I'm a bit confused. Please respond 🙏
It's a mixed voice, the first sign for a mix voice is that it gets brighter than the voice he speaks with (speaking register), that's mix voice. It feels like the resonance is buzzing in the back of your neck and it goes up to the back of your head as you ascend in pitch.
thank you for this! i’m a 15 year old singer and my voice is changing so i can’t wait to try these tips. i’ve been trying to mix voice for the longest time but it’s been very discouraging because i haven’t been able to find it yet:(
i’m glad i found this channel!
@Control Reality, not particularly. Just don't try and push things too hard. Give your voice the chance to move into its new range. Keep doing your vocal exercises. I chose not to sing on stage during the 12 months my voice was breaking - I was a bit insecure so the thought of it cracking while singing in front of people made me nervous. But talk to your singing teacher and/or people who know you and your voice better than me.
I started srsly singing around the same time! Give it time & work with whatever you’ve,it’ll get better I promise! I wasn’t able to belt up until I was like 19 ahaha
hey thanks for this, "think down to go up" sounds like such a simple instruction, but it's actually already helping a little bit. this is by far the most helpful video I've seen on this topic
It helps so much even with the support it’s like you do that and the body knows exactly how much you need to flex for the sound
Tyler Wysong has opened my mind and put me on a new path of thinking about singing better and living better. I'm open to becoming great!
Awesome! Think down while singing higher, compression/flow balance, pinched nose to get the sound past the mouth into the head - GEMS! Your resonance is *mind- blowing*! I’ve subscribed and just purchased both of your courses. 👍👍👍👍👍
Woah this actually worked immediately when you said the first tip. I tried and did an Ab4 then I tried to go higher and hit a C5!!
I guess being a tenor would help, lol. I can reach that just fine when I wake up, but after I had whooping cough some years back I completely lost my falsetto in addition to losing more than one octave within an hour of waking up every morning.
@@liamneslind4182 Yes, but apparently it needs to be taken again every few years, which no one ever told me until I actually got it. Had my last vaccine in the military service at 19, then got the whooping cough at 26.
@@liamneslind4182 Norway, where I live. It's very uncommon though, except for my family I don't know of anyone who has had it. The doctor had never actually seen a case before, but she was really young though.
@@liamneslind4182 Absolutely. I'm about to have one again. It really was a very uncomfortable experience to have the disease, and I had it easier than two others in the family. It's even possible to break your ribs because the coughing can be so strong. Think about coughing three times stronger than a manly sneeze, and not being able to stop until you've been going nonstop for several minutes. Then later on during the disease course the actual whooping cough arrives, which is extremely uncomfortable.
@@Dellerss Devastated to hear about this man, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I got whooping a couple of times when I was a kid, and it took me out of choir. I wasn't able to sing again properly until I was 19.
How's it going now bro? I got a cough in December, and I still get small coughing bouts now. I can't sing like I used to. That's after 2022 being the first year where I got over puberty voice changes which decimated my voice..
With this kind of teacher/coach/mentor, I am certain that younger generation will not be lost
I had been able to sing more freely since i start using your tips, thank you so much Tyler
2 years later watching this video and just got the message I needed. Thak you for your words by the end of the video. I'm struggling to chance my mind to become better instead bitter. Thank you for your work.
Been really trying to get over my decent F4 but it has not Been possible for a long time now. I’ll really try these tecniques of yours. Maybe I’ll update on how it goes. I recently did a small music video on a Chicago song where I brought the notes down quite a bit. If you want to listen to it I mean xD. Thanks for the video however!
Update 1
I hit my first clear G4 today. And i felt that my throat was not being strained. Just the try before that my voice cracked. So what really helped me was having enough air in the body before starting to sing and really feeling the push from the stomach and not the throat
@@Johnhasa1 Sadly the update is quite dissapointing. It’s mostly because I recently moved and school started. Haven’t Been able to find much time. But I have noticed som changes in clearity in my notes and some form of ease when it comes to hitting my F4. Not really able to go much higher yet however. I’ll update on further progress
@@eliaberhd5554 ok. I got a bit caught up with other think in the past weeks too. All the best!
Another great video. Actually think I'm starting to feel what mixed voice feels like.
Awesome Vid man! I will be buying your Master Class. Thanks for putting it together !
May 2020 I bought Mixed Voice Masterclass. I'm 52, this is all easy for me now. Understanding decent support, really really work on building your chest voice and combine with this, and eventually, it all just comes together and is easy. In previous videos, you said it's easy, it is. I still do the daily exercises to this day.
awesome exercise. thinking about bringing the voice down did the trick! thanks Tyler!
Thank you so much for all what you said. I am exactly now in that proces. This is so difficult time, but I don't give up. Thank you♥️
I'm a bass. Idk why I'm watching this, but it's actually pretty helpful. And it's good to make sure that I'm keeping my high range while my voice is getting deeper.
Lol High tenor C for a bass is insane, that’s a full octave above a lyric bass’ second passaggio. Meanwhile
that’s only 5 semitones above the lyric tenor’s second passaggio.
C5 to a lyric tenor is like F#4 to a lyric bass
That doesn’t mean it’s impossible for basses to go up to high tenor C, it’s possible, There are people that can take a chesty sound a full octave above their second passaggio. It’s just ridiculously hard lol
True basses, I will say, are quite rare. Even popular basses like Geoff Castellucci for example are not basses by classical voice standards. Geoff would be a lower baritone, his second passaggio sits at Eb4. And he calls himself a baritone too. Still hard with a voice like that to get up to high tenor C (Geoff has done it though)
Just keep pulling your range everyday. 5 months ago, i used chest voice on the F4 and kept on singing a bit higher everyday. The result was outstanding, 2 weeks after that i reached the g4 and then 4 weeks after the g4 i hit the a4 somehow. Then i took a week off sadly i couldnt do the A4 after that 1 week break. But hopefully it will come back with me soon. Now i can do decent g4 and good f 4
You have a beautiful sounding and powerful tenor high C Tyler! Great job! ☺️❤️🎼🌈⭐
Wow, man. You kill it. Thank you and mad big ups!
Amazing as always. Good point about the time it takes to get used to it and learn it well. If youre doing it right...keep that going and it will get better into greatness! But don't do it wrong to make it faster.
I've been singing for about 5 years and have been pulling chest the whole time and have only been able to go up to G#. Been working on this technique for about 6 months and I feel like I have it up past B and C but struggle on bringing it back down to my normal range around G without breaking. Any tips?
if you're breaking whilst coming down, it means that those top notes are not effectively in your mix but are more disconnected/falsetto. check out Tyler's video on vocal cord closure and try the unparalleled staccato legato waltz scale. It honestly did wonders for me
@@icarus5676 I think this is not necessarily true. "Bridge areas" are difficult anyways and you can truly be in the mix up high but lose it while coming down to finally break. For example I feel that singing in the mix is "too easy" up high and I don't need much breath support up there, but then if I come down from there with the very little support I tend to break around the bridge area because chest voice is just naturally so much heavier, the diminished mix will break into heavy chest voice.
Well tips might include trying to thin out your chest voice a bit, just do it gently instead of a powerful chest voice. It's all about balancing and finding a good compromise between thinner mix coordination and the heavy chest. Please note that this is not the final "end product" but rather a milestone to get to. You can build up heavier powerful mix but you first need to learn to go through your bridge without the break.
I find pharyngeal exercises very good for connecting your different registers but as in this video they might oversqueeze and pull up your larynx. That's why sensation of going down or even "behind towards the back of your neck" instead of going up is helpful. A real breakthrough for me was the feeling of instead of shouting out of my mouth, singing up in the head a BAH BAH BAH -type of scale and thinking my whole body to push backwards... towards the spine. This seems to have enabled a synchronized way for my breath support and vocal folds to function.
I have a same history on pulling chest except I did it for ~20 years... :o)
@@patopodolyak ua-cam.com/video/oZLw5sJn8Pk/v-deo.html sure.
the key to mix voice for me was the larynx tilting as opposed to rising. I did that for a couple of months and viola
@@icarus5676 thanks for the vid! I definitely have the same type of issues with my larynx.

I think we have the same way for any high note and this is mixed voice. If you can do (pass) with A#4 you can do the same with B4, C5, D5,…Anyway your excercises are very helpful, thank you!
OMG!!!!!!! that was so helpful I usually struggle with the hi c as a new singer for a year and with this technique, it just came out so easy and relaxed wow I can't even believe it. the nose thing really helped me connect with the c thanks so much I subscribed and will be following you Thanks Tyler
WOW Tyler, how cool this is! The more go back and rewatch your videos the more I learn and the better I get at the mix. It's like you gave me a big set of keys to use to get access to a whole new set of toys. Woooooooooooo! I'm having fun. You were right, I wanted to give up and I kept going and not getting it. Then, I kept going and WOW! Thanks so much.

What is the name of the apparatus with the “silver ball” I’d really like to try that!
I really enjoyed this video and immediately shared it with my three band mates
I unfortunatley cannot find the exact one I am using here, I don't think it is available on Amazon anymore.

Most days I tap out around B4 but am able to hit the high C, I just can’t hold it for sustained periods. Part of the reason why I think I’m unable to hold it is because I often just try to straight up belt it. So I’m able to tap it but there’s no way I could hold it. Lately I’ve been experimenting with my placement up there, and I have noticed (like you said) that directing the sound very vertically, seems to be the most helpful. It results in a lighter sound but it’s also a much more balanced sound. However I noticed that the way you performed it in this video is very light; almost like a heavier head voice sound as opposed to a light chest sound. I think I always try to hard to make it sound like a belt and this could be the major thing holding me back. Awesome video, I feel it could be really helpful; I’ll definitely give these techniques a try. Hopefully I am able to level up.
Hey man!! I have been practicing mixed voice for almost 7-8 months now. I'm a natural baritone so my actual chest voice ends around D4 or E4. But if I go chest heavy mix, it goes about A4 & sometimes B4 if my throat is in top condition. But recently I started hitting some C5 & C#5s but it's a bit thinner mix. So basically, you have to learn jumping/switching between different co-ordinations of mixed voice. And yes, with enough practice no one will even notice the switch. Also, twang & vibrato can help to give it the edge!! Hope it helped!!
This is very helpful! Sometimes it can be a mental thing that limits us with our capabilities. You got a new subscriber! :)
I love how you break stuff down. I especially love how you use Gavin Degraw in your videos.
Well and then a great technique tutorial comes to a plot rwist and turns into such a beautiful message that simply blew my mind. Thank you hugely. I did indeed appreciate that!
Dude! Such an inspirational video man! Here i come in search for some good vocal exercises to reach higher notes. Not only did you give me that, your inspirational part gave me so much motivation and fired me up afasin ! I thank you for that, and also i subbed! Your voice is amazing btw !! Keep up the good work!!
I know you're not singing "flutey" sounding falsetto.. But it sounds more like a strong head voice to me than a mixed voice. JS. Great message at the end.
That's fine. I wasn't trying to sing it in chest, in fact I can't sing in chest all the way up there.
Dude thanks to your videos, probably 2 years ago I found my mixed voice and now I can sing high C easily but I have a problem with flipping from chest to mix, but I think I know how to fix that problem. Once again thank you!
Bro this actually worked (1.5 years exp self taught), hitting that high c now with ease, holy f you're a hero Tyler 👏👏👏
Very encouraging, thank you!
The fact that on a good day I can hit a C5 without my voice sounding floaty I’m really impressed by my natural range. My voice tends to cap at Bb4 before I have to start pushing but even when I push I’m still able to carry weight on a B4 and C5. Anything above that I flip into a mix voice with more of a heady sound. Or either my falsetto
Dude. You are awesome. Found this by "accident." Looking forward to magnifying my skills since I will not modify my dream to sing better than I can now imagine.
Fantastic video, and I learned a lot, but the biggest thing you are teaching is your attitude… that’s what it takes to become great at something. Thank you 💪🏼
The voice feeling like it pops up inside the head is the perfect analogy of how it feels
Great video! Awesome advice... You got a new sub
Great tips!
I’ve always had a big range but I just had a hard time like doing them on demand lines that. Aiming downwards I was doing it SOOO EASILY.
Tyler, today i purchased your masterclass and it´s been awesome. I am a little confused by the routines. especifically when i can go for the next one.
Hey Jose, great I’m so happy for you. Shoot me an email at bookingtylerwysong@gmail.com
And maybe I can help answer your question regarding routines. Thanks.
Best title to watch the video ahaha. I can hit C5 with mix, but I really need to strengthen It's volume
I am already a high voice as a male and have no issues on a Tenor high C (C5). I can even do higher notes than that. However, it was always my low notes that I have never done well with.
Tyler great video! Where are you based out of? I can belt a high C BUT I need to better my technique. I need to learn to fine tune my technique so I can continue to sing like this for another 20-30 years.
I’ve been singing for 18 months now and I can hit a D5 on a good day. I can hit a C5 after an hour warm up. In the beginning of my singing journey I was able to hit A4 on a good day after four months in my singing but it sounded terrible. Now I sound way better. Not like Tyler though his singing is amazing.
What was your process in these months to get to C5 and D5? I'm stuck at G4, and A4 it's just falsetto for me.
@@AlexDicy my D5 is weak. Be patient. I do a lot of warm ups, I use the straw technique, lip trills, also I’ve learned a few tricks from Tyler channel. I play guitar so that helps me a lot. Best thing to do is find your self a vocal coach to point you to the right direction. I know it’s expensive, but you know what! It will be worth it. You have to strengthen your diaphragm it’s important.
@@AlexDicy and keep in mind I’m 44 years old. Patience and practice is the key and love your own voice. Make friends who are musicians. And don’t let anyone discourage you on your music Journey.
Hey Tyler, a fellow voice obsessor. That "high C"/"high D" you are doing is a head mix. It feels different because you are putting more head voice into the mix. It's a clean sound I will admit that but if you want to get that raw belting power you have to lean more into the chest. I know head mix is much easier to do, but there is a ring to chest mix that just sounds meatier and fuller.
But to each his own. Hope you have a great day and good job on the video. :)
Edit: I'm a Baritone that can hit a resonant Eb5 (in a song) in chest mix. It has taken a long time to get there and I can sing E5/F5/F#5/G5 (but not in songs).
Hey I went to your channel and didn't see any videos, do you have any of you singing up anywhere? I would love to hear your chest mix on an Eb5 that would be epic.
It worked👀 Really resonant. It isn't perfect, but I haven't ever deliberately gone for a full sound in the head and got it until now! I hope to get your mixed voice class when I've saved enough pennies.
Great message! I subscribed. Thanks. WYTAYBA!!! What a difference one vowel (or in this case…perception/attitude) makes- will you get bItter or get bEtter???
Thank you Tyler I think you are a Louise Ray’s fan, am I right? So do I :) cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
Do you think it's possible to grow as a singer from mostly thinking about singing and then just practicing a little here and there for short amounts of time. I've been trying to give my voice a rest because I feel like I might have a little damage from years of over use and drug addiction. My band just broke up and I've been sober for almost a year, so I want to take some time to let my voice heal, but I also want to continue growing as a singer
Yes to a degree. I would really recommend for a time focusing on the semi occlusions as well as falsetto for a little while too and then working on laryngeal stability. You can do this my friend!
@@tylerwysong Thanks man. That was my plan, because I'm trying to add balance to my voice and open up that Bb4-D5 mix. Right now I'm a chest dominant singer, so I max out around A4-B4 then after that I can only keep going up in headvoice which maxes out around G5
always likes your positive mind Tyler

What’s the weighted silver ball singing warm up device which is shown in the video that provides back pressure? Thanks in advance!
SOVT is "Semi Occluded Vocal Tract." I had to look that up. Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna commit to using that device on a regular basis. Do you also recommend straws? Great video. Thanx!
I am 82 years old. I started singing February 2019. I started singing dramatic tenor up to D4. I now sing dramatic tenor up to G#4 and on a good day A5. I can sing weak lyrical above C5. I am slowly increasing my dramatic tenor. Will I ever be able to sing very high dramatic tenor? I have over a 5 octave range and my best quality sound is around C3 so Tenor is new to me. As I practice my highest chest notes remain lyrical but slowly I can sing louder.
Sir, if you can, please read the book "Caruso's Method of Voice Production".
It's available on the internet. Nearly everything you need to know.
If I may ask, when you say 5 octave range are you including falsetto and fry? If I may ask what your modal range is?
U are a Good teacher
Question, how would I go about keeping everything flow together?
Ty you should do a Boyce Avenue Style Video Where you perform this song
Thanks, Tyler. What is the name of this device you use in the beginning that provides the backpressure?
Unfortunately at this time they no longer sell this exact product I’m using here. If you look on Amazon for the Acapella Device it is very similar if not the same device that I’m using here.

hey tyler, could you make a video about the g~g# range? I find those notes to be harder than a, b, or even c. I find myself getting heavier and heavier the more i sing those notes in a song
Probably where your passaggio (break) lies. Difficult to get more sound out of that area of the voice. Add more head/falsetto resonance to avoid heaviness. “Lighten up” on those notes
What is this pipe he’s using ?
And thank you for the video it helps me a lot !
Hello,
I wanted to clarify regarding the point where you say that we should be singing in our skull.
I am able to do this and I get the sensation but I feel a sort of strain in my vocal cords when I try to push the sound up into the head.
How to do this is in a more natural manner?
Great video. Very inspirational. Is it possible for a baritone to sing in this range?
Entirely. I have to use falsetto for c5, but I can achieve crystal clear tone. I am a natural baritone, and can go as low as c0, tho I have to use throat rather than chest voice for that low note. This technique he is describing also works in reverse for low notes. My bottom note in vocal fry is g#-1. My top clear note is d5. I do not have an impressive range, but I have practoced almost exactly these technoques for 25 years. Just keep practicing. Just a decade ago, my range was only just over 3 octaves. Increasing range above natural limitations is possible. U can do it!👍
Edit; sorry, I meant c1 and g#0. I don't have a range over 5 octaves, and did not mean to imply such. Regardless, three octaves chest voice should be possible for anyone, and using throat voice , vocal fry, head voice, and falsetto effectively can help just about anyone add at least a 1/2 octave on top of that. Good luck to ya!
What’s the device he uses? Can’t find it anywhere.
1:57 what is that thing called and where can I buy it?
In your opinion, how much vibrato is too much vibrato for the pop/contemporary style?
I think that is so subjective! It's going to depend on the singer. We can always go back to some of the greats though ans study how much they used, for example Brian McKnight, Luther Vandross, Steve Perry, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston etc.
Most people sleep on beds, but singers be sleeping on your channel 🙌 amazing vids bro 🔥🔥🔥
What I do is warm up with falsetto from c5 to c3, then I sing low and chesty tones from A2 to A3 and I try and combine the low larynx feel with the release of the falsetto. When my lungs warm up too, it all works quite well!
Man, this comment has been a breakthrough for me, thanks for sharing
@@theskiesaboveus glad to hear it! :)
