- A long standing rumor in the Star Wars fandom is that George Lucas hates Mara Jade. I'm not so sure that's the case.
In this video we will break down the history of Mara Jade in the Star Wars Expanded Universe and how George Lucas' feelings towards her may have changed over time.
Perhaps some day we'll see her in canon?

EU haters can’t understand that George Lucas was joking in that Robot Chicken clip.
I knew that. I know Lucas wanted to make Luke basically celibate like a priest, but I never saw malice from him.

I really wish the sequels was about Mara Jade instead of Rey when you realize, both Mara Jade and Rey are connected to Palpatine and have similar attire, including the goggles from ep 7. However, now I wouldn’t want the character to be ruined by poor handling and rushed productions, which could lead to plot holes. at this point the only thing saving star wars is just making our own head canons and continuations.
I hadn't even thought of this because of the age gap between Rey and where Mara would be at that time. I think her seeking Luke would've been a really cool story though.
I had the idea for my fanfics that Luke and Mara can go pick up Rey from Jakku when she's still a little kid and officially adopt her. That way she has a *real* reason to be called "Rey Skywalker". Also, Mara would be the perfect adoptive Mom/Jedi master for her, with, as you said, both of their connections to Palpatine.
Or... you know, they could've just went with George's original idea and made the Sequels about Han and Leia's children.

Entertainment has been stagnated lately, the MCU is in trouble, DC's future is uncertain, and Star Wars has not learned any lessons. This is why we need people like you out here to help give us hope, and to create amazing stories and content for IPs like Star Wars! Keep doing what you do best!
Move away from franchise films or better yet, pick up a book, a medium where there are plenty of good stories to be found.

Mara's one of my favourite characters, but honestly, after what Filoni has done to Thrawn, I hope Disney *never* shows her, because that way, they can't ruin her too.
Oh hell, Filoni have done Thrawn SO dirty... I also previously wished they used EU characters, but now I just think “please, leave my poor boy/girl alone, you, motherfuckers!” whenever I see them retconning my favourites.

Really a near 1 to 1 adaptation of her death in the old EU would go a long way to fix things in TLJ, like instead of Luke reacting the way he did because he saw what Ben MIGHT do in the future, it was a reaction to something he had ALREADY done, that being he was the true culprit behind the murder of Mara Jade, a woman that Luke had loved so much, that he had nearly fallen to the dark side hunting down and killing the person he had believed to be the killer (a former Inquisitor/Emperors hand named Lumyia, who along with another former Inquisitor, Snoke, had been manipulating Ben towards the dark side)
100% agree. Probably the only way i would come to accept Luke in the sequels completely.

@@Hello-bi1pm Agreed, totally out of Luke's character no changes will fix the sequel Luke it was totally not him,. Even in Legends when he found Jacen was behind Mara's death he sent Jaina as he knew he would fall if he dealt with it.

I rather Disney get the fuck away from Old EU or else they gonna make a water downed one dimensional version of Mara Jade just like how they water downed Thrawn, Clone Commandos, New Republic, New Jedi Order or Kylo Ren being a bratty incompetent version of Jacen Solo or High Republic being their uninspiring money version of Old Republic because Disney has REALLY loathsome and vexing habit of turning beloved characters and concepts into soulless abject failures.
And I certainly despise if they bring Mara just so that they excuse the dumpsterfire space twilight fanfic that is sequel trilogy.
Fair enough, honestly. Would love to see some more solid fan film adaptations of the EU though. It's probably the only way we'll get her real story.

George didn't hate Dark Empire, he approved that story. Tom Vietch asked if they could clone Darth Vader, to which George replied, "No, but if you can bring the Emperor back, that'd be neat."
There is a lot to Dark Empire and how it forced George to be more involved in EU. My next video will be covering this topic.

@@zshah3107 That wasn't what he said in the quote. That was a quote where he said there wasn't a Sequel Trilogy and that he had nothing in mind for what happened after ROTJ at the time.
The very safe path for Disney is introduce her on the Lego Star Wars series, specifically Rebuild the Galaxy. That way they can screw around her character and find out what's best from what they've done. Hope she's not another Ahsoka tho. I like her Emperor's Hand story, so she better be an Agent doing super spy Imp stuff from the get-go. I'd imagine her seeing Luke's hologram pic in his 20's and say, "we would've married... Too bad he was a Jedi." lol... An alternate Mara should work.

The sequels are really a lost cause. Mara Jade's journey is what really draws me to the character, from Emperor's Hand to Smuggler to wife and Jedi Master. Her journey with Luke is her strength and her growth is more than any other Star Wars character. If they're not going to do her right no point having her at all. Current disney would just destroy her so I would rather they not have her at all. She's my favourite character. I hated when the EU killed her off, biggest mistake the EU did.

1:49 - "Heir To the Empire" is NOT the first EU novel. The first ever SW project ever released was the Episode IV novelisation titled "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker". After that you had the 70s Marvel comics, the SW US comic strips, the UK comic strips, "Splinter Of The Mind's Eye", the other OT novelisations, the first Han Solo trilogy and the Lando trilogy as well. You also had a few children's books that were part of the EU. In the 80s there were also the Ewoks live action films, the Ewoks and Droids cartoons and their accompanying comic tie-ins, plus other material such as the SW RPG sourcebook and other non-narrative books of the sort. Then in the early 90s you had the Thrawn trilogy and the Dark Empire comics, and that was when there was an EU revival. The EU precedes the premiere of Episode IV itself.

Fair. More so in the sense that HTTE kicked off the Expanded Universe timeline. Nobody credits splinter for doing that although a cool expansion of the OT in its own right.
If I remember correctly EU, the one of kid twins of Leia and Han, the student of Luke Skywalker, Jacen Solo turned dark side and killed Luke's wife Mara Jade. Jacen name got reused for Kanan and Hera's kid, Jacen Syndulla. Ben Solo and Rey Palpatine are connected with Force Dyad, sharing their abilities. Rey Palpatine is also similar Jaina Solo in the sense of who is her master (Luke Skywalker) and who she sees as her parents (Leia and Han Solos). Mara Jade was formerly the right hand of Palpatine and her last mission was to kill Luke Skywalker, her later husband.
If we would try to make Mara Jade the most similar to EU within Canon, it will most likely look like this. Mara Jade is Force sensitive human female enhanced by Hemlock by the order of Sheev Palpatine. She was Palpatine's personal assassin trained since birth. She was also First Sister, although nobody in Inquisitorius personally knew her, not even Vader besides Grand Inquisitor who trained her. Before Palpatine died he ordered her last mission to kill Luke Skywalker. Blah, blah, she became his wife, you know her story. And then besides Skywalker Academy Ben Solo also killed Mara Jade which made Luke grumpy, reject Force and Jedi teachings. His whole life ruined and he was done with everything. Got back to being whiny like his young self on Tatooine. Then add Mara Jade Force ghost who will show up to grumpy Luke right after R2D2 scene which will make him turn back to his former matured self.
See, that's the problem, right there: I don't want The Mandoverse to be the supplementary notes to The Sequel Trilogy. I don't consider The ST part of Lucas' canon; therefore, I don't want good epics like The Mandalorian Saga to trouble itself with "trying" to "explain" the terrible writing and characterization choices of The ST. If George is alright w/ Mara Jade appearing in any capacity, then, fine...just don't bring her in to "beef up" the tragedy meter to justify Jake Skywalker's existence in Episode VIII. It's disjointed...leave it at that...that will be its legacy. Move on and make Mara a relevant character before and after Episodes VII thru IX. BTW: I'm not AT ALL anticipating that Rey/New Jedi Order movie, either. I don't want Favreau, Filoni, and Lucas to have to set the table for that story either.

Personally, I wish they would just ignore the sequels and start fresh.
Looking at TLJ Luke really needs a Mara Jade in his life. Now I understand why Jedi have the no attachment rule looking at Anakin situation and circumstances broken the Jedi code keeping the marriage secret didn’t help him at all. Ultimately I think Anakin and Luke journey should reflect each other Anakin went left and Luke went right. In EU Luke was the only Jedi at the time didn’t have much knowledge of the old order and work with his own experience but he had a life that Anakin would wanted had a wife and son became grandmaster of the Jedi order really shows the light side is the right path.

Good video! I did a video myself covering this and debunking the George hating Mara myth and rumor a bit ago on my channel. I'm rewriting the Post-ROTJ in the New Canon, basically everything after Mando Season 3 is going away, and I'm going to be giving Luke an original love interest named Vana Starsair inspired from elements of Mara Jade and Callista Ming.

I think that makes the most sense with Jacen killing her in the EU.

I love Mara Jade she's my favorite character from the EU, i have the 3.75inch Kenner figure and I bought the Black Series version which i've kept in it's box as a Collector's item. I still have my Mysteries of the Sith DF spin-off game, and she is a unlockable player in the Masters of teras Kasi video-game. I'm even currently working on my own Custom 1/6 scale figure of her, using a Phicen doll, cause they have the silicone and stainless-steel metal frame which allows full articulation.
Anyway I have always longed for Mara Jade to be brought back into Live Action, Disney Starwars Canon; but it seems the way Disney have gone with the starwars IP i don't think they will ever bring her in anytime soon. My prediction however is IF things get so bad to a point Disney's Rey movie were to fail and do poorly at the box-office; i believe this would be enough to make Disney bosses realize they can't do anything more with their sequels era canon at that point.
I think by then, IF that were to actually happen, Disney might just do a soft kind of retcon in the form of a "Clone Wars" animated style long-running series, that could retell the Skywalkers story after events of rotj, and fully adapt the thrawn trilogy, showcasing Mara Jade as "the Emperor's Hand" when she first comes across Luke.
this would be really cool, and if there was a way the writers could somehow consistently connect stories like the Interquel "Shadows of the Empire", through the Rogue Squadron comic/novel stories too, all the way into the o.g. thrawn trilogy, possible with aspects of *Dark Empire* (just ignore Palpy's clones lol), that would simply be amazing.
Mara Jade beats ALL these "Strong Females" Disney Starwars has today. And yes, i mean even Ahsoka.
Mara is also my favorite EU character! Sequel era is clearly a dead end for Disney, hasbro doesn’t even make toys from that era anymore because they don’t sell. I think that will be confirmed for Disney when the Rey movie inevitably flops. I can only dream of them turning to the EU stories for a clone wars style series. That would be incredible!
@@jarjarjargon Well for now we can only wish & dream. the CW and even those tales of the.... are quite popular; and it's the only way they could do it now, considering Filoni has really kind of ruined thrawn in live-action how he's tackled him; and JJ & Rian screwed up a chance for the Legacy Characters; so animation is really the only way to go, and the CW/Bad Batch style is cheap too, so i think they could do it.
One other thing i think if this Rey movie massively under-performs, hopefully the money it loses for Disney and overall Failure of the Rey character herself, will be so embarrassing for Kathleen Kennedy, she could well step down at that point, then the writers will truly be free of her control and influence. Not gonna build my hopes up too much but this could be a possibility one day.
Such a series could be even longer running than the CW and Rebels shows put together, it would simply be huge, like EVERY fan would tune in to watch that, even the younger ones.

Keep your eye on Carrie Beck, she's a small name no fans talk about (yet), but she's been getting Exec Producer credits on more and more starwars productions lately. I can see Kennedy trying to have Beck replace her. Ideally i would luv Jon Favreau to run Lucasfilm, because when he's left in control he's proved he can do wonders for Starwars. He was absolutely creatively interfered with and sabotaged by Kathy Kennedy. Although admittedly i don't think he would ever want the role of running all of Lucasfilm, plus he has his own production company i think; but he would be the perfect choice.
We need someone in at Lucasfilm who is first and foremost, above being a "business type" a *Fan* just like us and Favreau is truly that.

Nothing can justify Disney’s slop trilogy. And trust me, you don’t want them touching Mara Jade. Just look what they’ve done to Thrawn, how much of a buffoon he is Ahsoka.
I do not like Mara Jade. I have no idea why Luke Skywalker married her. Yeah, she’s pretty, and a force wielder. But she’s a horrible, whiny witch. Bent on taking revenge on Luke (by killing him, of course) for the horrible crime of ending her position as one of Palpatine’s stooges. Yes, she hates him because she lost her job. She’s the Star Wars version of “going postal.” She has no real personality. Almost her entire emotional range consists of irritated and impatient (her default) to furious - all just levels of anger. There’s no spark between her and Luke whatsoever. Hell, Luke has far more chemistry with Chewbacca than Jade, or Mara’s new boss, Talon Karrde, or even R2-D2. Yoda? Undeniably. The dianoga, that trash compactor creature in A New Hope? Definitely.
In all seriousness, the problem is that, except for obvious exception of Leia, there aren’t many well-written, “eligible” women in Luke’s life. About the only female near his age around is Jade. And she totally sucks. Of course, this is subjective, and if you like her, I’m happy for you. To me, well, Luke should just keep looking.

Visions of the Future that was the last EU book published under Bantam and for me, that's when Star Wars officially ends in my mind. I know the story goes on, but a story must end, if it keeps going on it will just become stale.

To me, the "make-X-character-canon" people are the most insufferable out there. They really don't get it at all. By encouraging the bastardization of beloved EU characters, you enabling the continued downward spiral of Star Wars, a franchise that lost its soul in 2014, and are being very disrespectful to the memory of those characters as they exist in the original canon (i.e. "Legends"). No "canon" Mara for me. Give me more "Legends" Mara or no Mara at all.

That entire SWT interview was basically bullshit. Timothy Zahn never met with George Lucas. He has said so repeatedly. What was being cleared through Lucasfilm was cleared was mostly cleared by Lucy Wilson. What was being cleared by George Lucas was EXTREMELY minimal and frankly, he could care less at a certain point because it was bankrolling what he ACTUALLY cared about and that was filmmaking.
And Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau and Kathy Kennedy work for Lucasfilm. Their checks say Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm is responsible for decisions made by Lucasfilm.
For someone who cares about filmmaking didn't seem to make a lot of films after Episode 3. Maybe he just likes being bankrolled.
@@Hello-bi1pm Lucas Licensing allowed for George Lucas to produce the Prequels. Hey also produced four movies after Episode III. But more than that he has begun production on other Star Wars movies when he sold the company.
I cannot stand Filoni. Mara was more popular than Thrawn in the 90s, and until the prequel era/KOTOR era she was probably the most popular EU character. They had to literally kill her off to damage her popularity.
The guy Lucas berates btw is Zeb Wells who is currently writing the worst Spider Man comic run of all time. Which includes trashing another popular fictional redhead, aka Mary Jane.

If it is true shes canon & in the movies it doesn't make sense at all she didn't exist then during return of the jedis production filmmaking. Thats not connected the movies its mentioned in the books written by someone else not by George lucas. George Lucas never intended give luke a girlfriend slash wife, jedis dont get married it breaks the code they make vows not romance. The books are separate universe not tied the main continuity. Theyre an If? Universe that happened. Not a real yes it did happen universe. There is no Mara jade, there is no thrawn, there is no imperial remanents and there are no jedi & no sequels. Period. The sequels are left us make & establish. He intended that us for do. He has his movies we have the torch make the sequel trilogy n future star wars ourselves & Luke doesn't have be the main character anymore anyone who comes up with star wars sequel trilogy their own perspective take has their right make their own new male or female character the main center protagonist. Bruh, he was all for new technology innovations, new story concepts he liked for HIS products. Vader didn't suppose to be Luke's father and Leia Luke's sister at New Hope but he changed his mind as time goes on. It's like with everything from what he produced.
And EU never was George Lucas Star Wars vision. He reused things from EU he liked and twisted to his liking many times, but it was just cherry picking and never the exactly the same as original.
